Forum Dead of Winter

Dead of Winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition — but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! Certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group's goal, but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's looking out only for his own interests!

Dead of Winter being played on a forum is only slightly more requiring of effort. It's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies, and keep the colony's morale up.

Dead of Winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

You may think this sounds a ton like a simulator. It is. Its literally a zombie apolocalypse simulator. But unlike the simulations non-objective nature there absolutely is a way to win a game of dead of winter.

Details
The colony has an objective they are trying to complete, but each player also controls a group of survivors that has a secret objective. Often this secret objective requires that a player help complete the colony objective. Only players who have completed their secret objective when the game ends will win.

5-12 players

Players each phase gain 2 actions and one move

Perform two of the following actions.

Attack - Attack a zombie or survivor in the players location. Roll exposure die to see if survivor is injured or killed.
(Rolled by GM)

Search - Draw one card from the item deck of that location.
(Will use actual cards from the game)

Barricade - Place a barricade over one of the zombie spawn points at that location's entrance.

Attract - Move 2 zombies from one location to the player's location.

Survivors Ability - Some survivors have special abilities that require an action die to be spent to use.

Take free actions that do not require die.

Play an item card from their hand.

Move a survivor to a new location. Roll exposure die to see if survivor is injured or killed.

Trade equipped items with another survivor in the same location.

Spend a food token to raise a die value by one.

Call for a vote to exile another player.

End Game: Game ends if the morale track reaches zero, the round track reaches zero or the main objective is completed.

Victory: If at game end the player has completed their personal hidden objective then they win. The group wins if the main objective is completed and the traitor wins if the main objective fails.

Soooooooooooooo you get killed in a game by the rules of the game. You aren't happy with that and think it's unfair the other players killed you by the rules. So you assault my PMs with accusations of mismanagement of my game, you claim i nerfed your ability because i didn't state a pretty obvious physical limitation. Then you start your own game because.. reasons... and then decide to mute me because you don't like the answer.

I think the penalties levied as a result were unrealistic. I think the gming was bastardry at best. You invented mechanics as you went - without any clarity. Certain player abilities you applied strict guidelines too and others you didnt. For example it was never stated if Ike had to be actually present to train men. No indication was given if bo had to be present to stop a native conflict. No radius or area of effect was stated on my ability
No caveats or radius or logistics were given for serial killer role.
It was made up as you went to favor certain players and favor storylines. Theres no evidence to show what wincons were eligbile or if they were handsewn. Theres no clarity on why people would sit back idly as a major fighter for their rights just got butchered. And its only like a -1 morale as if my reforms were pointless. I suspect thats more your political beliefs than the people.
But whatever keep bastardizing it up.

Let’s respond since this game probably won’t get off the ground well just make this our argument thread. The game takes place on a 16-17th century new world colony with a governor and a distant king. You were a councilor who had insulted the security leader of the colony. When the governor killers you, of course the two specialists you insulted didn’t take your side and if you read over the other two stressed their disdain and the colony received not only a -1 Morale but a -1 corruption , -2 Health and no doctor for 1 phase. What did you want the specialists to demand the Councilors invoked be executed? The councilors are the law so if they killed you they did so in respect of the law.

Now on to the coming up with things as I go. Of course I did for example I had not planned for Kench to draw a map but one he did I worked it into the game. I had no plans for your councils creation of a currency but I worked it in. I put hours of work into building tech and research trees, resource guides, and player cards. Not to mention the odds charts for all the actions I could think of. Now you are here the runner of the last sim (who did a decent job and if I remember correctly had just as many suddenly added game mechs and unexplained decisions) calling me out on my sim because you don’t like to lose. Seriously BB grow the fuck up.

This is getting a bit off Brainbomb's topic, but the new forum is mostly being implemented for site stability. Increased functionality is great, and we'll be keeping a features that really make it useful, but it's not the main point. The current forum is unstable in a number of ways, which causes issues on the back end. Ultimately we can't really add new diplomacy features to the site with this forum in place. However, the optimisation of the pre-built forum allows us to have more dev time and server space to implement more complex features to the site.
(I don't have a computer science background, so this might not be the complete picture, but it's what I've understood.)

So I am still willing to do this.
Ive got 4 interested players and a copy of the game. I think I will divert heavily from board game and do away with the 10 phases max thing. Ill just make it survive as long as you can.

Also to make it more forum friendly I will do away with clearing waste mechanics, and unless we get a lot of players I wont have any traitor

Rules:
Each character gets influence, attack and search.
Players act as a team, searching surrounding buildings, building barricades, rescuing survivors, managing food and killing zombies.

Players can obtain things by searching the other locations:
Weapons
Fuel
Education
Food
Medicine
Tools
And additional survivors


There is a crisis at the beginning of each phase.

Moving to a location: movement does not count as an action you may move once per phase anywhere. However leaving the colony the GM will always roll to see if you get frostbite, or if you are attacked.

Combat:
To attack a zombie, a survivor or a fellow player you must be in the same location (dont even say it byron lol). Anytime zombies appear in your location the GM rolls for if you are bitten. You may use both actions any phase to attack.

Search: to search a location you will obtain a card from the GM privately. You gain a number of search attempts equal to your characters search level. So for example if your character has a high number such as a 5, you can gain up to a max of 5 cards on any search. I am making this different than the board game in a few aspects. You never fail at searching it is automatic. However the total.amount you gain from a search is maxxed out at your search ability score. So if your score is a 3, and you fimd three items you dont need to use second action to search again.

Build a barricade: you can spend an action boarding up a window or making a barricade.

Playing a card: you can always play a card from your private hand as an action.

Adding cards to crisis: you can add cards to the crisis as an action.

Trading cards: you may trade with any player occupying the same space as you.

Exile a player: means you banish a player to live somewhere else. That player earns a new solo wincon.



Exposure:
The GM will check anytime you move, or anytime a location you are in has a zombie outbreak.
*blank means nothing happened
*wounded means you have 1 wound on you
*frostbite each phase, until removed you gain an additional wound
*bitten: your character is infected, and you become a zombie. The colonists must spend an action killing you.

Death of any survivor or player character loses the colony one morale.


Each phase: you lose 1 food for every 2 survivors and player characters.
Each survivor and character unable to be fed earns you a starvation token.
If you are unable to feed everyone -1 morale for every starvation token.

At each phase end after everyone has moved, and all actions taken the GM will resolve the crisis.

Zombie spawning: at the beginning of each phase, in addition to your crisis, zombies can always potentially appear. Zombies appear in random locations at times, the crisis can place them, and noises like gunshots, broken glass or anything loud can attract them.

Zombies can appear in isolated groups, one at a time or in hordes.

There are six entrances to your colony. If a zombie rushes your colony (the cafeteria) they will always appear at one of the 6 entrances. So try to barricade your colony heavily.

If there are no barricades and a zombie appears at an open entrance they will attack and breach. If no survivors or characters are at the colony then you can allow it to be overrun but you still need somewhere to go.

If zombies appear at nom-colony locations you can also build barricades. Some buildings can only hold so many people.


For the purposes of making this fun we will be playing hardcore variant on your colony objective.

Im gonma try to eliminate any possibility for controversy this game too. dow has pretty good rules that are mechanically sound. My biggest knock on it is the waste disposal mechanic which is just rather dull. Im also not a huge fan of crossroads cards. So simply put, im stripping down aspects that make it a board game and making it more a forum game.

A sample turn by a player should just read like this.

Move-> Power Plant
Action 1: Search
Action 2: build barricade

And when your actions are final. Just ##END like we do in mafia.
End votes are final and cannot be undone.

There are no NPCs unless you count zombies.
There are no specialists
There is no tech tree
There is no proposals you just discuss what you want to do and how to do it as a team
The phases are 24 hours and will always shift at midnight CDT
If you miss a phase - oh well
If you die - rejoin
You dont need to role play
You only need to fulfil your wincon and the colony objective - and not lose obviously.

Questionable behaviour in gunboat?
Hi,
I'm wondering what constitutes reasonable grounds for suspected cheating/multi. I'm in a gunboat game where nothing seems to be proceeding logically, but one player in particular seems to have thrown all reason to the wind, apparently with the express intent of screwing me over. At what point does suspicion of cheating become reasonable? What happens if those suspicions are confirmed after the game ends?

Hi. A while back, I happened to spectate a game with a map variant I hadn't seen before. It was, if I recall correctly, a map of the world in 1066... or 841. One or the other.
