I know it's late for this kind of background info, but sometimes late is better than never:
In case it was not obvious, this tournament is based loosely on the NCAA basketball tournament held every spring. I've organized a Marx Madness pool for over 20 straight years and you simply never know how things will play out. There are highly rated teams and less rated teams. Some teams have their first couple games in their home state while other teams have to travel from one coast to the other. There are always numerous upsets, which leads to surprising matchups along the way since a single loss and you're out. Again, this anonymous tournament is not meant to be an exhaustive evaluation of who is the best at 1v1, it's for fun with the hope being that the results will be somewhat surprising, even though it is very likely that one of the very best players will win, what will be more interesting will be the matchups along the way and how far some of the less likely people in the tournament can advance.
It's true we have 20 people in our tournament, so it won't be straight-forward as to how we navigate the standard 8 team quarter-final and 4 team semi-final, but I have some ideas on how to adjust the approach to efficiently get us to a single champion, needing to weed out a few extra people along the way, here's hoping it all comes together as planned (or not, making things up as we go is also an interesting approach).
