Balance in Modern Variant
I just got back into diplomacy after a two year hiatus and looking back at my old games I've noticed that the modern variant has big differences in skill required to be successful between countries. So I ask, has anyone been successful with Ukraine or Egypt?

Army builds only game
I've set up http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=205374 as a game where the restriction (self-enforced) is that you can only build armies - you are stuck with just whatever fleets you start with.

Remote Viewing Recommendations
I'll be sending a live cam cyborg [code name: BanHammer] to the UK for a few months and I am looking to do a fair amount of sightseeing via the cyborg. Anyone have recommendations for can't miss sights/experiences? (let the sarcasm...and hopefully 1 or 2 useful suggestions...abound)

Dont let the dark Tower waste your life.
The pitifull ending to the book series.
Smokey Gem (154 D)
28 Aug 17 UTC
I read the whole series only for him to go through a door in the tower back to page one line one book one.. the fact that King says in the intro that that was the best line he has ever written is no excuse to fuggin repeat it. It is as strong an ending as " and he woke up and it was all a dream". DONT LET THE SERIES WASTE ANYTIME OF YOUR LIFE LIKE THE BOOKS DID TO ME..

That's a bit sad to hear SmokeyGem. I made an effort to read Colleen McCullough's (? might have spelt that wrong, but it's the Australian author who wrote "The Thorn Birds" ) extremely well researched series of books set in Ancient Rome, and now I'm up to the last book of Bernard Cornwell's series of books set in the time of Anglo Saxon King Alfred the Great, and enjoyed reading them.
I'm very good at prevarication when it comes to avoiding my own writing projects, with the exception of scribbling out yet another cheque for The Fire breathing MemSahib when she asks in her sweetest "voice of impending doom" armed with bag of knitting needles and other sundry small arms.

Oh the comment about bringing characters back to life reminded me of those ghastly movies.."The Expendables" with Sylvester Stallone. My primary complaint about those movies is that not enough of the Expendables are actually expended in the movies. Amidst all the purported expenditure of ammunition and explosives these blighters all survive the various missions. In one of these excruciatingly painful to watch movies even the principal villain survived. When I see a movie titled The Expendables, I expect at least a 70% fatality rate in the team sent on their mission. There are times in War when a glorious, noble sacrifice is required to boost the morale of the chaps waiting to go "over the top" and the folks back home. When the Squadron Leader picks you out, and the fitters have done a splendid job readying up the good old Spitfire, and you're told to "Go and take a shufti over Bremen and don't come back" a chap is expected to display a stiff upper lip, and with a cheerful "Piece of cake, Skipper", head jauntily off over the Third Reich, give a few Messerschmitts a dose of salts & maybe a Focke Wulf 190 a solid kick in the rear vestibule for good measure and then get done in by a nasty bit of flak & go down in flames singing " we'll meet again someday, don't know where, don't know when...."
It's just not Cricket to come limping home, aerlions flapping, with more holes than a sieve in the trusty old Spitfire. So when Sylvester Stallone advertises himself and his lads as The Expendables, I have an expectation that they WON'T be coming home from their mission.

Okay @SmokeyGem, but did you read the edition where the author put in a note that said "I wanted to stop here, but my publisher won't publish the book unless I put this line in so here you go" ? Originally, he just had Roland going to the Dark Tower, and things faded to black for us... we never were supposed to find out what happened inside. I read that as King saying "my publisher wants me to change this, so I'm going to write as lame an ending as possible so all the fans know that the real ending was the first one."

I basically don't like the second "ending," and only agree that the first is canonical. It's better literature that way anyway.

fwiw

I've heard the movie is TERRIBLE. The books, I thought, were pretty epic, and sounds like they far far surpass the movie. Bit graphic at the front end, but the guy was like 19 so I'll cut him a break.

Been a while since I read the series but I personally had no problem with the circular ending. I had a problem with King inserting himself as a character, and the supposed big monsters at the end, the demon spider baby thing (Mordred? Am I remembering that right?) and the crimson king, turning out to be absolute nothings. King rushed the last two or three books after he got hit by that van and began fearing he wouldn't live to complete his opus. As he is still alive today all these years later, I wonder if he regrets that.
Smokey Gem (154 D)
31 Aug 17 UTC
he could alwys write it all again with the same ending ...that would b an epic opus..

Yes crimson is trapped because he forget to leave te balcony sliding door open..

Mordred was a bust... and King being as important as he was as a character ...maybe thepain killers from the MVA ..It was almost brilliant but never fully fullfilled its promise...

@MajorMitchell - I miss the days of the Magnificent Seven and the Dirty Dozen where they were really expendables. Big named stars that were ready to die and not worry about making it to the sequel.

Those books by Bernard Cornwell.. His "Saxon Tales" start with "The Last Kingdom" ( also the name of the "video series" recently made based on these books ) and end with "Warriors of the Storm". ( which I picked up from the library today ) Also today I purchased the first series of " The Last Kingdom " on DVDs for $Aus 17-oo today from BigW ( like a Wal-Mart ), the third series ( eps 27 to 39 ) of the USA House of Cards for $Aus 17-oo ( already have the first two series ) & for $Aus 10-oo a Western on DVD "Forsaken" with Donald & Mister Sutherland & Brian Cox, whom I rate as a very good actor.
Well I'd been to the local Kremlin to pay a quarter's Council rates & visit the attached library.. And The Fire breathing MemSahib had given me a shopping list to attend to at the 3 Supermarkets & Fruit & Veg shop ( Avocadoes, Tomatoes & 2 Punnets of strawberries at $Aus 2-oo each..life is tough ) Obviously The Fire breathing MemSahib cannot have me get everything at one Supermarket.. LoL ..It's a Death sentence to disobey her precise instructions.
So with a visit to the Post Office Box to find a few "loving letters" from our State government.. All are going to cost me dearly..Emergency Services Levy etc etc & a Water Bill... I felt faint in contemplation upon the iniquitous demands of taxing governments..to be saved from being rendered prostrate in woeful financial despair, when I fortuitously came across a sausage sizzle raising money for a new holiday house for kiddies with terminal cancers as part of the local paper's 105th year in print celebration, so in a mist worthy charitable cause i consumed three or four sausage sandwiches & chatted with a few cronies. Jeremy of the old "Induced wave polarisation to find where the goblins have buried the copper & gold" gang & we reminisced on the good old days of finding scorpions in one's boots & a King Brown Snake in one's sleeping swag & drinking billy can tea...so after reinforcing on sausage sangers and a mug of tea, with light blue Mercedes Benz Panzer saloon laden argosy fashion I journeyed home to face the gorgeously grim visaged Fire breathing MemSahib & the loving lash of her daintily forked tongue...it's been a busy day for Daffy old MajorMitchell
Now, in the mausoleum quiet refuge of "my quarters", after dinner and a few single malts, whilst my Medusa~like MemSahib fusses about in her armoury; I have done my orders in 3 games, and equivocating about that diabolical fourth (world) game and wondering if i put Russia with eight scs into Civil Disorder because that blighter with N*** E*** backstab'd me in most foul manner & that cork brained clown and constantly whining purported ally with E***** is more a millstone round a chap's neck than a reliable performer on one's Southeast flank. Yes I think Civil Disorder and let Western C***** triumph in that game if he's good enough...
Now I feel distinctly tuckered out, so manuscripts may gather dust...Argo investments just paid out sixteen whole Australian cents per share as a second half dividend, fully franked with imputed tax credit, so I survive the importuning governments and grocers, gratuities to the house for cancer ridden children with spare dosh stashed in my trusty golf bag ( as cunning as The Fire breathing MemSahib is, she never thinks to look there ) & there is no need to do any real work with pen and paper.
Tomorrow is the first day of spring.. The Panzer saloon needs an oil filter and oil change, and a string of sunny days are forecast..i might, no I will make a trip to the city, there's a B grade, then A grade Australian Rules Football amatuer preliminary finals ( a young chap somehow related to me plays Rover in the A grade team ) on Saturday and The Fire breathing MemSahib won't attend these brutish games..However, Princess Estelle will happily accompany my good but occasionally philandering self to watch the energetic young blighters chase the leather ball about and knock each other senseless...and as she resides in the city it would be churlish not to invite her along.

I dislike the way in movies etc where there are these ferocious "bullet bonanzas", and there's hardly any blood spilt. Chuck Norris's "Texas Rangers" was so pathetic it was almost satirical. I remember one really corny episode with Chuck and a pal in a VW Kombi van being chased through downtown Beirut by two pickup trucks with heavy machine guns mounted in the rear trays...the Kombi gets sprayed with fire...countless SFX bullet holes all over the Kombi, they pull up at the airport tarmac, & out hop Chuck and his pal..without a scratch... Really schmaltzy propaganda stuff.. Chuck takes on the PLO single handed and wins without even getting his hairdo messed up.
Whereas .movies like Saving Private Ryan, Fury are so much more realistic. Borrowed "Dark Blue World" from my local library today after putting in a hold request for it after it was mentioned in a forum thread a little while ago..realised when I got it that I've seen it already.. But anything to dodge doing some proper work..LoL. So I'll watch it again. Another day.
Now it's The Last Kingdom and young Uhtred of Bebbanburg. If I can stay awake.

Oh, yes Smokey Gem, two batting collapses, and some inspired performances by the Bangladeshi chaps have routed our Test Cricket team. Well done Bangladeshi's. It's a long Summer ahead with plenty of time at the crease to set things to right. The ACB deserve a solid kick in the rear vestibule for the way they mismanaged the contract negotiations, IMHO.

Biggest Pot Game in webDiplomacy HISTORY
Just as it says in the subject line. I've been tasked with helping set up the biggest point game in webDiplomacy History. Probably in part because it's way above my number of points so I'm beneath taking part myself.

It's going to be *fully* anonymous; aka no one (besides myself) will know which 7 players are in the game. If you want to take part, or have any questions about the game, PM me for the password/details. Game link here: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=205041
