Those books by Bernard Cornwell.. His "Saxon Tales" start with "The Last Kingdom" ( also the name of the "video series" recently made based on these books ) and end with "Warriors of the Storm". ( which I picked up from the library today ) Also today I purchased the first series of " The Last Kingdom " on DVDs for $Aus 17-oo today from BigW ( like a Wal-Mart ), the third series ( eps 27 to 39 ) of the USA House of Cards for $Aus 17-oo ( already have the first two series ) & for $Aus 10-oo a Western on DVD "Forsaken" with Donald & Mister Sutherland & Brian Cox, whom I rate as a very good actor.
Well I'd been to the local Kremlin to pay a quarter's Council rates & visit the attached library.. And The Fire breathing MemSahib had given me a shopping list to attend to at the 3 Supermarkets & Fruit & Veg shop ( Avocadoes, Tomatoes & 2 Punnets of strawberries at $Aus 2-oo each..life is tough ) Obviously The Fire breathing MemSahib cannot have me get everything at one Supermarket.. LoL ..It's a Death sentence to disobey her precise instructions.
So with a visit to the Post Office Box to find a few "loving letters" from our State government.. All are going to cost me dearly..Emergency Services Levy etc etc & a Water Bill... I felt faint in contemplation upon the iniquitous demands of taxing governments..to be saved from being rendered prostrate in woeful financial despair, when I fortuitously came across a sausage sizzle raising money for a new holiday house for kiddies with terminal cancers as part of the local paper's 105th year in print celebration, so in a mist worthy charitable cause i consumed three or four sausage sandwiches & chatted with a few cronies. Jeremy of the old "Induced wave polarisation to find where the goblins have buried the copper & gold" gang & we reminisced on the good old days of finding scorpions in one's boots & a King Brown Snake in one's sleeping swag & drinking billy can tea...so after reinforcing on sausage sangers and a mug of tea, with light blue Mercedes Benz Panzer saloon laden argosy fashion I journeyed home to face the gorgeously grim visaged Fire breathing MemSahib & the loving lash of her daintily forked tongue...it's been a busy day for Daffy old MajorMitchell
Now, in the mausoleum quiet refuge of "my quarters", after dinner and a few single malts, whilst my Medusa~like MemSahib fusses about in her armoury; I have done my orders in 3 games, and equivocating about that diabolical fourth (world) game and wondering if i put Russia with eight scs into Civil Disorder because that blighter with N*** E*** backstab'd me in most foul manner & that cork brained clown and constantly whining purported ally with E***** is more a millstone round a chap's neck than a reliable performer on one's Southeast flank. Yes I think Civil Disorder and let Western C***** triumph in that game if he's good enough...
Now I feel distinctly tuckered out, so manuscripts may gather dust...Argo investments just paid out sixteen whole Australian cents per share as a second half dividend, fully franked with imputed tax credit, so I survive the importuning governments and grocers, gratuities to the house for cancer ridden children with spare dosh stashed in my trusty golf bag ( as cunning as The Fire breathing MemSahib is, she never thinks to look there ) & there is no need to do any real work with pen and paper.
Tomorrow is the first day of spring.. The Panzer saloon needs an oil filter and oil change, and a string of sunny days are forecast..i might, no I will make a trip to the city, there's a B grade, then A grade Australian Rules Football amatuer preliminary finals ( a young chap somehow related to me plays Rover in the A grade team ) on Saturday and The Fire breathing MemSahib won't attend these brutish games..However, Princess Estelle will happily accompany my good but occasionally philandering self to watch the energetic young blighters chase the leather ball about and knock each other senseless...and as she resides in the city it would be churlish not to invite her along.
I dislike the way in movies etc where there are these ferocious "bullet bonanzas", and there's hardly any blood spilt. Chuck Norris's "Texas Rangers" was so pathetic it was almost satirical. I remember one really corny episode with Chuck and a pal in a VW Kombi van being chased through downtown Beirut by two pickup trucks with heavy machine guns mounted in the rear trays...the Kombi gets sprayed with fire...countless SFX bullet holes all over the Kombi, they pull up at the airport tarmac, & out hop Chuck and his pal..without a scratch... Really schmaltzy propaganda stuff.. Chuck takes on the PLO single handed and wins without even getting his hairdo messed up.
Whereas .movies like Saving Private Ryan, Fury are so much more realistic. Borrowed "Dark Blue World" from my local library today after putting in a hold request for it after it was mentioned in a forum thread a little while ago..realised when I got it that I've seen it already.. But anything to dodge doing some proper work..LoL. So I'll watch it again. Another day.
Now it's The Last Kingdom and young Uhtred of Bebbanburg. If I can stay awake.
