Remove Discussion phase on the forum as a variant
The reason I want a forum without the discussion is because we already have a lot of threads, most being about steephies company, and punching shit, and I find the extra time it takes to mute them all a bit excessive.

What is the etiquette of draws. If the game is at stalemate but a player won't agree a draw.

Liberals are even worse than conservatives
The left should be focused on abolishing nationhood and class. Not microaggressions and compromises like minimum wage.

Yellen Speaks on Friday
Is our low inflation transitory or not? Is Yellen in touch with advancements in monetary policy? Is this exactly what the protocols of the elders of Zion predicted??? (Probably)

All that and more coming out of the one place on earth you associate with global banking: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Just putting this thread up now so I don't forget to check things out tomorrow. There's also a question to whether or not Yellen is going to have Trump on her side or not once everything is said and done

Current inflation rate is a fraud made by changing the measurements to keep it artificially low. Especially when you use the version that leaves out food and energy because people don't need to eat and travel.

i think the bond bubble is underestimated by too many, but also i feel like this low inflation isn't just temporary, but rather technology driving down prices and changing demographics are really keeping us below that 2% mark

Any link to back up what you are saying Randomizer? I'm intrigued.

Yanik, why do you think the 'bond bubble' is being underestimated?
JamesYanik (548 D)

@Tom

not currently underestimated, but it has been for the last 5-6 years. people were predicting inflation coming on at any point, but instead it hasn't happened, and all the focus that should have been spent trying to identify overvaluation in different markets that could explain some of this stuff, didn't really unfold.

last 12 months though there has been a lot more attention on it though

Explanation of how it's calculated:
https://www.bls.gov/cpi/questions-and-answers.htm

The key paragraphs are here:

Will the CPI be updated or revised in the future?
Yes. The CPI will need revisions as long as there are significant changes in consumer buying habits or shifts in population distribution or demographics. By developing annual Consumer Expenditure Surveys and Point-of-Purchase Surveys, the Bureau has the flexibility to monitor changing buying habits in a timely and cost-efficient manner. In addition, the census conducted every 10 years by the Census Bureau provides information that enables the Bureau of Labor Statistics to reselect a new geographic sample that accurately reflects the current population distribution and other demographic factors

As a matter of policy, BLS is continually researching improved statistical methods. Thus, even between major revisions, improvements to the CPI are made.

The "Improvements" are changes in the baskets of goods where the government assumes that when one or more items increase significantly in price, that consumers will substitute cheaper "equivalent" items there by lowering the inflation numbers. So the different inflation indices aren't true comparisons from year to year. We aren't talking about buying a store generic over a name brand, but buying the cheapest type of meat instead of the one in the last sample.

I sort of misunderstood both of you.

I agree with you Random that the CPI isn't really all that good at putting an actual number on inflation, but really the important part isn't the number, but the trend. And inflation has been pretty slow and steady for quite some time. Do you think inflation has been increasing more than normal recently?

Tr - I fall into the camp that believes that a "bond bubble" isn't really a thing. Its what folks say to scare people into watching their shows on tv and reading their columns. Overvaluing bonds enough to create a bubble is incredibly hard to do because they have concrete value as long as they are held to maturity. You always have the option to hold bonds until maturity, and if you do that, the price and value of the bond is irrelevant - at that point only the yield matters, and the yield cannot be impacted by what happens in the markets.
That isn't the sort of substitution that is commonly used in CPI, Randomizer. It's more often "Oh, people don't used CD players any more. Maybe we should take it out" or "Wow, the price of this TV has plummeted 70%, maybe we should switch to a newer model"

This is also why economists don't use CPI, but rather use PCE figures. I'm not remembering the precise differences right now, but it's a more reliable figure. Also, energy and food prices are excluded because they're highly variable. These figures are produced so you can compare them to the past. If you have energy and food prices wildly fluctuating, the dataset becomes less meaningful. In traditional economic analysis and models, these factors are broken out into separate variables.

How to start the game without it canceling
So I've been waiting for five days with six players to start a game, and as soon as it starts, I refresh and it says it's been canceled. Says I did not reach the limit of seven players. How do we actually start playing, after the waiting period is over?

Question about moves in game - Fall of the American Empire IV
Sorry for being a newbie, but as a fan of Diplomacy, I was really happy to find this site. My questions about movement - Is there an app or software so you can set up these variant maps locally and model moves/situations? Immediate question for my current game: On the Fall of the American Empire IV map, can I move a fleet from Manawut to Ungawa?

I'm reluctant to accuse anyone of multi-account shenanigans or outside communication, but something seems a bit amiss in this game. It's full gunboat, no messaging at all, but somehow one player just convoyed another player's army across the North Sea.That's a hell of a guess.

Civil Disorder?
What does it mean when a player goes into civil disorder? Obviously happens when they don't play a turn, but does anything happen or is it just to notify the group that the player missed a turn?

Second Opinion on company name
Hey guys,
My company is called Broad Expert and someone recently asked me if a native English speaker would initially associate Broad with 'wide' in a literal sense, rather than the intended association with a broad expertise. The question of whether the name is proper use of English was also brought up.
Thoughts?
