Liberals are even worse than conservatives
The left should be focused on abolishing nationhood and class. Not microaggressions and compromises like minimum wage.

American Empire IV map - another move question
I move a fleet from Arctic Ocean into Nunavut. Can I then move from Nunavut to Manitoba. (There doesn't appear to be any coastal restrictions in Nunavut but I wanted to be sure before I committed to the move - Thanks

Remove Diplomacy phase as a variant
The reason I want a variant without the diplomacy phase is because we already have very long phases, most being a day, and I find the extra diplomacy time is a bit excessive.

How to start the game without it canceling
So I've been waiting for five days with six players to start a game, and as soon as it starts, I refresh and it says it's been canceled. Says I did not reach the limit of seven players. How do we actually start playing, after the waiting period is over?

Question about moves in game - Fall of the American Empire IV
Sorry for being a newbie, but as a fan of Diplomacy, I was really happy to find this site. My questions about movement - Is there an app or software so you can set up these variant maps locally and model moves/situations? Immediate question for my current game: On the Fall of the American Empire IV map, can I move a fleet from Manawut to Ungawa?

I'm reluctant to accuse anyone of multi-account shenanigans or outside communication, but something seems a bit amiss in this game. It's full gunboat, no messaging at all, but somehow one player just convoyed another player's army across the North Sea.That's a hell of a guess.

Civil Disorder?
What does it mean when a player goes into civil disorder? Obviously happens when they don't play a turn, but does anything happen or is it just to notify the group that the player missed a turn?

Second Opinion on company name
Hey guys,
My company is called Broad Expert and someone recently asked me if a native English speaker would initially associate Broad with 'wide' in a literal sense, rather than the intended association with a broad expertise. The question of whether the name is proper use of English was also brought up.
Thoughts?

Would anyone be interested in a -whoever wins grills- steaks diplomacy game? The notion is that we'd all have a potluck some amount of roasted veggies on a grill, and some ribeyes. We go to a ftf party, then get naked.

Bounce vs DMZ
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a bounce? Same question with a DMZ.
TiconderogaHB (100 D)
22 Aug 17 UTC
Well, for starters, a bounce will let you know that whoever you bounce with can't take that territory (granted he can't support himself in), but ties up one of your units, and shows you don't have enough trust in your neighbor to stay out of it otherwise. A DMZ on the other hand frees up another one of your units to be used elsewhere and shows greater trust in the person you made that arrangement with, but it makes it easier for them to stab you as that DMZ can be violated for their advantage (or yours!).
Maltir (125 D)

So how would I propose a bounce if I want the other guy's unit in that area? I.e. Eng proposes a bounce with Fr in the Eng Channel but wants a French fleet in it.
Maltir (125 D)

Also, what is the connotation when one or the other is proposed?

The downside of a bounce is that your opponent may want to get you to move units out of position. So italy can offer france a bounce in mars (in fall 1901) with the full intention of letting you move into mars succeed (losing france a SC in spain).

Or similarly put the opponent out of position.
MajorMitchell (1025 D)

I try to avoid unnecessary bounces. They can be useful, but they can also be a waste of "unit moves" ( eg think of man hours.. a common unit of measurement, similarly I have a measurement of resources in Diplomacy.. Unit moves ) The best players get the best value from a defined number of unit moves available to them each move phase
orathaic (1009 D (B))

So it really depends.

Turkey and Russia usually see the black sea bounce as mandatory, and offering to do something else is see as suspicious.

Meanwhile, Italy and france almost never in piedmont in 1901, and the offer to do some would be very suspicious.
orathaic (1009 D (B))

Other common opening bounces are
Burgundy (france vs germany)
English channel (france vs england)

and common DMZs (whether unspoken or agreed)
Galicia (russia vs austria)
Silesia/Prussia (russia vs germany)
Armenia (russia vs turkey)
Tyrolia (germany v italy/austria) - not necessarily between austria and italy though.

And the only thing i can think of which is probably both.
Venice - Trieste where either a bounce or a dmz is acceptable.

Generally speaking a DMZ suggestion in an important province signals either an intention to build a strong alliance, or an intention to trick the opponent into leaving it open. In high level games, it more often the former, as strong alliances are far more valuable than initial positioning.

A bounce suggestion generally signals that the player isn't willing to take the risk that comes with a DMZ just yet. In the earlygame before you've had a chance to converse with the player properly, it makes sense that you wouldn't want to take the risk, so earlygame there tend to be a few important province bounces (Bla, Gal, maybe Bur) whereas later on you'll see many more DMZs.

I also don't understand why a Pie bounce would be suspicious. It helps Italy's security by ensuring the fleet must be the unit to take Pie, thus cannot be on Spa (sc) at the beginning of 02, and it helps France by ensuring Italy is not in Pie.

A consideration is how these two options appear to the other players. When you bounce with someone, it can have the appearance that you are at war with them, allowing you to maintain an illusion of alliance with a third party that may not necessarily exist. Whereas a long protracted DMZ with somebody can scream "partnership" to anybody looking at the board.

@Cpnmeme, if italy wants they can let france into pie and leave them not taking spain (or choosing between spain and portugal). Which is, as i suggested, leaving france out of position.

Now this is great if italy has something solid going on with germany/england. And not so great if France has built up a rapport with Austria (and they will take venice).

As france i would usually suspect italy if they offered a bounce - as italy i would usually be lying to france if i offered a bounce.
captainmeme (841 D Mod)

But that's a great way to annoy a France while putting him in striking distance of your HSCs. Sure, it denies him one center (probably) but it's definitely not to Italy's advantage.

If Italy has something going on with EG, he does not want a French army in Pie, since it blocks his own expansion and allows EG to divide the centers up before Italy can get to them.
orathaic (1009 D (B))
22 Aug 17 UTC
Yeah, it's not a great plan, but France can't gain much from going to Pie, that is why i listed it as a usual DMZ. Even if italy moves to pie, france can still protect mars fairly easily, maybe with a self bounce with burgundy... So overall the average 1901 leaves pie empty.

Now if you decide to try something unusual, that may not be the case. But then i like doing unusual things.
