It is not OK to punch ISIS and Al qaeda members
If ISIS and Al Qaeda wanted to hold a march calling for death to America and a fundamentalist caliphate to take over the US then any who attack them or inhibit their right to free speech are evil violent people

What do you all think about Faustian stories?
Diplomacy is a great playground for turning on friends for personal advantage, and I'm pretty sure everybody might compromise their held virtues for a little harmless gain in most places of their lives. Do you all think Faustian narratives are on point the more we all trod into the great 21st century, or is the devil obsolete and unversed in the digital age?

The faustian pact we have all made is the lucrative benefits of oil burning to provide a glut of energy - and this wealth - which has allowed massive development of technology. The downside of the deal is the environmental cost about to ruin our natural habitat.

Now that seems like a fairly clear faustian bargain to me. Except it is just about possible that our technology will outpace the environmental damage, and we will be able to absorb the costs of climate change into our economy (greatly grown since we began burning oil).

You could make other analogies regarding communications technology and government surveliance... Or other things, i'm sure. But Faust was guarenteed to pay a price, and we are not clear whether we will be able to afford that price.

I don't think of diplomacy as being like that at all, to be honest. We come here to enjoy a fairly unique game, and that game is best enjoyed when players are willing to use all the options open to then. Stabbing someone for the win is part of the rich tapestry of the game. Not stabbing someone because you're applying a version of morality unsuited to the game waters down the experience and takes enjoyment away from everyone.

As for Faustian tales, on a fundamental level they're just a "bad things happen to bad people" idea, aren't they?. Always have been and always will be relevant, although whether the medium is a devil or Father Christmas' naughty or nice list, or karma, doesn't really make a lot of difference.

Karma doesn't mean bad things happen to bad people.

Karma is best described as bad things happen, and good things happen, and sometimes what is seen as bad from one perspective is actually good from another.

The common illustration is, a farmer tills his field, exposing a worm who is promptly eaten by a bird. This is good for the bird, bad for the worm, and the farmer didn't really give a damn ablut either...

Life can be like that, it doesn't give a damn about the positives and negatives, or whether you deserved the pina or gain. Stuff just happens.

This is very clearly different from the western idea of 'karma' coming back to bite you in the ass. Which is just your typical sin and punishment idea from Christianity, repackaged in an Eastern woo-woo sounding way. That isn't what any of the reading i've heard about Karma actually state.

The Christian idea of punishment in the next life, after death, for sin and reward for good behavior was created in the Middle Ages to pacify the lower classes. It allowed the clergy to tell peasants that their suffering would be rewarded so as not to revolt against the mean upper class.

Faustian bargains weren't bad things would happen to bad people, but that greedy people would suffer a bad fate for making a bargain even with good intentions. There were no short cuts without consequences.

*re:karma, or i could be wrong and different Eastern Traditions could each have their own philosophy and definition of Karma, some of which do indeed match the sin&punishment (even after death, your reincarnation eing dependent on built up Karma).

@Randomizer, oil is a literal shortcut to accumulated solar energy stored on the earth... The question is whether we will be face the consequences or how badly we will be screwed.

@ Randomizer

Sorry, you've lost me completely. How does one act greedily with good intentions?

You go, "i will take all the worlds oil, but only to prevent its mis-use and develop super weapons to defend against aliens."

For example.

Depending upon which version of Faust you use, some had him in search of knowledge and for the improvement of the world by controlling war. Hs greed for knowledge isn't itself evil.

In what sense does that count as greed? Greed isn't just consumption. It demands a high degree of selfishness or at the very least the consumption of far more than you require, surely?

"New Game" page needs correction.
When creating a game and selecting the pre-phase length, the description says up to 5 days but the dropdown gives only up to 2.5 days.

Leaving the grey arrow
Is there any bigger asshole than the guy who's doomed to defeat and puts in his moves with a grey arrow so that everyone has to wait a day or more each phase? Of course everyone goes out of town sometimes or is unable to get to the site for some reason, but someone who does it faithfully every turn should be banned. It's the behavior of a crybaby.

Anarchists in the US
"if we possess any sort of freedom today in this society, it is the result of all the times people defied and overthrew governments, not because of the times they were obedient. If not for disobedience, we would still be living under the rule of kings."
