New Mode? Bots?
I think that we should be able to play with bots 1v1. It would be much more fun for some people and it could be free

No... no.. .no... that would just be the next step in robots taking over the world!

very funny! but i mean, really, i am sick of waiting so many hours for a turn (if i even find a game)

Issue with an AI with this game is there is no perfect move. In reality you can never predict what a human would do. The robot would do the "ideal" move each turn. Which you could very easily figure out and counter. Then you'd use it for practice and get so "good" at countering. Then you play a real game and lose everytome because you fail to recognize individual play styles.
CommanderByron (869 D (S))

If you are looking for a fast paced game play live. Otherwise the game wasn't designed for that. The original board game is a 4+ hour affair.
A_Tin_Can (2254 D)

I think it's absolutely possible to write a formidable AI for gunboat, especially 1v1. I think the reason no one has is due to lack of sustained interest from capable people, not because it's inherently impossible.

intention of diplomacy is 'not' to be a 'fast' game... it is diplomacy - talking / negotiating / yelling / crying etc..... for a fast game, best to play a pure war game instead of diplomacy...

Read the back issues of Diplomacy World. The discussion and development of AI in Diplomacy has been going on for 30+ years. It's fascinating but problematic.

Do you have any particular links? I'm aware of the DAIDE project, but I thought the Diplomacy World article about it mostly described a protocol for AIs to communicate with game masters (so there must be more articles than I've seen).

What ATC said, learn how to use a deep learning neural network, feed it info from hundreds of 1v1 games, and then train it against itself for thousands upon thousands of games.... (learning how to beat itself- or an earlier version of itself - each game, and get better at beating itself...) and then play against the best in the web.
eturnage (601 D (B))

There was an old Diplomacy program that ran an AI circa 1990. It was not good. Could be easily defeated. But better than CD.

The ALBERT bot is strong. It allies and it stabs.
https://sites.google.com/site/diplomacyai/
Play it with the DAIDE interface.
Play seven games agasint six alberts. If you win one game, you are a good player.
Deeply_Dippy (402 D)
09 Aug 17 UTC
Sorry ATC, I don't. As I say, the different articles span decades and are quite fascinating, from a social history perspective if nothing else.
2ndWhiteLine (2875 D (B))
09 Aug 17 UTC
It's going to be a long time before AI is able to beat the top Diplomacy players but I'd say a basic bot could probably beat 80% of the scrubs on this site.
orathaic (1009 D (B))
09 Aug 17 UTC
@2ndwhiteline, i wouldn't not be surprised if it only takes a few years, the only issue is getting quality press to train the bots on, decent natural language processing is hard, and linking the language directly to the abstract map is likewise difficult...

but getting an AI to play 1v1 games should be comparitively easy.

A good Diplomacy bot would have to be taught how to lie. I'm not sure we would want that.

I haven't played against Albert for a good few years, gave it a go today...

https://i.gyazo.com/9e7c384795b77a556097769b75739985.png

Got the solo first try, although the AI gave me a hell of a hard time. It's certainly much better than any other AI I've played against.

I also just noticed that the difficulty goes up to 100 (was playing on the default, 50). I guess I'll have to try again at top level :D

Also, my PC has a really hard time running Albert Level 100.

Where can I get Albert?
captainmeme (846 D Mod)
09 Aug 17 UTC
CCR linked it above:

https://sites.google.com/site/diplomacyai/

Go to the 'DAIDE QuickStart Diplomacy' page and click the 'Download QuickStart Now' link. After an installation wizard it'll put a green icon on your desktop called 'QuickStart Diplomacy' - run that to play against Albert.

One thing to note - it shows units in Liverpool as being in Yorkshire, so make sure to check the 'Last Results' tab to check if the unit is where you think it is. Found that out the hard way.

Controls are relatively simple - left click a unit to begin giving it an order, then you can do a number of things:

- Left-click it again to set it to hold.
- Left click an adjacent province to set it to move there.
- Right click another unit to set your unit to support whatever you've set that unit to be doing - you can issue draft orders to other players units too, to allow you to support their movements. If they are set to support or hold, your unit will be issued to support hold them; if they're set to move, your unit will be set to support the move that they are making.
- If you've clicked on an army unit, you can set a convoy path by left clicking on each fleet on the convoy path in turn, then finally on the destination space. This will set all clicked fleets to convoy your unit's move, and will set your unit to move via convoy to the final province.

CCR (448 D)

So anyone else tried against the Alberts?
The challenge remains: can you play seven games agasint six of them - at level 100 as Cpt.Meme pointed out - and be able to solo once, or twice?

HOW TO PLAY THIS
The instructions did not mention this scenario: If you attack a province that someone occupies, but that someone is moving their unit in that select province to a different province that is unoccupied, their move cancels and they have to defend their province which is being attacked right? I know this to be true based on my own experiences, but I wanted to confirm.

Private game replacement rules
I've been told by a deadbeat admin that is losing a private game that he has the ability to pick any replacement he wants and he asked someone who I'd rather slit my wrists than play with. There's a reason I play passworded games and I think there should be a rule where you need the consent of people in your private game before picking a replacement.

Playing with less than 7 players
I'm just starting a game to play with a few friends of mine, and because there will only be four or five of us, I was wondering if the game would actually start if we only had 4 players, or if it would just cancel and refund our bets. If it does cancel, is there a way for us to play a game on here with only the four of us?

Why aren't my games available?
I am new to both Diplomacy and this site and I am currently in 2 games. One as France and one as Germany. But the turn timer rolled over and when I came back to view what happened the France game, it wasn't in my game list. What happened?

If details help, it had classic in the name, started in 1901, the game turn rolled over at 2:35pm and it was anonymous players.

Joinable Games
Currently the Games window shows that there are 101 Joinable Games. However, when I select the Joinable Games tab I find only 3. There are supposedly 11 pages worth but anything after the first page is empty.

Can anyone explain this discrepancy to me?

Beginner question regarding the capture of supply centers
I thought I might find the answer to this somewhere in FAQ, but alas I could not. So, my question is: if an army/fleet moves into a territory with a supply center during the Spring, then moves out during the Fall, is that center considered yours?

Why was my support move blocked here?
http://webdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=201965&turn=11&mapType=large
I'm kind of a noob so this might be a dumb question.
I'm playing as France. The relevant bit is the move the army at Kiel support move to Denmark from Heligoland Bight. This fails because of Germany's move to Kiel from Munich, but Munich can't move there since it's being dislodged. Shouldn't my support move work since the Munich army is being attacked?
