Who are web?
This site uses the pseudonym "webDiplomacy" to run and host Diplomacy games. I was just wondering who web is, and why they should come before diplomacy, considering this is a diplomacy site.

I propose we can all threads proposing ban on topics
All threads proposing ban on topics on the forum always start and end with people insulting everyone on the other side.
If we never propose banning topics, the mods will have to find some other excuse to abuse their power.

Advertise your NON-live games here!
In an effort to combat advertising for games inside otherwise unrelated threads: Post here for your non-live games to cut down on the number of ads that thread readers are subjected to. Post game link, game type and the bet. Note: this doesn't count for special rules games.

Minimum players in classic game
Hi all, my first time creating a game on my own. Is there a way to set the game to only 4 or 5 players for a private game? I didn't see any option and it shows "game will start when all 7 players have joined" now. Thanks for any help!!

Chat history
I really want to review all the messages I sent to someone, but the history logs appear limited. Are they just gone, or is there any way to see the full message logs with a player from a game?

Question concerning game rules (pms)
Hi there! I need a public and official reply by a MODERATOR.
If you play a match without anonymous players, but even without private chat (only team chat): Is it allowed to write the other players private messages in order to negotiate? In my opinion everbody see the names of the other players and everybody can write to the other players, so it is a fair system. It is a very important part of this game to negotiate, you know.
How are the official rules?

WebDiplomacy Website Buy-In/Ownership
Just a question that I have, not too sure if anyone can answer them. I have been pondering how people own the site. I know that you can become part of the Moderator/Admin Team or donate to the site, but how would someone go about purchasing the Web Diplomacy site?
Would there be opportunities now or in the future for someone to buy the site as an individual or group ownership?

If I were to buy Web Diplomacy what would be the benefits and drawbacks of being an owner of the site?

Does the site owner(s) have more input in how the website is ran?

1. doubtful.

2. benefits, ensure a game you love gets continually enjoyed by people online. cons, running the mod/admin team, dealing with the morons on this forum, dealing with the mods/admins when they have ego trips (I include myself in here), recruiting developers, avoiding lawsuits, etc, etc.

3. Absolute input..it is their site after all.

Thanks Valis and Bladerunners.

I shouldn't have assumed that owning the site would be like YouTube or a phone app where the more people you have using your site/service you get a small money amount each year.

Capt Brad: Was that before or after your retirement ;)
It's great to hear from you Capt Brad. I thought that you blocked me on Web Diplomacy.

The site owners don't make any money from webDiplomacy. All donations are put towards server costs (or, more recently, site development).

Youtube and Phone Apps work like that because they show ads - webdip has always been, and will always be, ad-free.

Aside from the random passport people popping in now and again.

I am somewhat opposed to this site going to one owner. I would be extremely disappointed were the site to degrade into an ad fueled waste or become some petty digital tyrants playground, or worst of all, just disappear.

I sincerely hope that the current owners (it sounds like there are multiple) are careful in who they allow to buy ownership, screening for the people who will support the existing culture and mission of the website.

If sale to a single individual was being considered, I would very much rather see a non-profit corporate entity created with a board selected by the existing donors to the site (those who had donated prior to the announcement of the entity's creation).

The board at that time can set rules for how ownership/membership in the entity can be acquired, and who is eligible to buy in. These rules would then be used to try to raise the necessary funds to purchase the site.

Then the owners/members can vote on future board members, with vote strength determined by total contribution/ownership (but you still only get one vote, so one person couldn't just select every member of the board).

I think this kind of scenario is probably not a better arrangement than what we have now, but I think it would be better than a single owner.

"webdip has always been, and will always be, ad-free."

That's the best part about this site. There's never any pressure to upgrade or buy anything other than from zultar's Etsy shop for toy poodle costumes.

The Last Known World Game
I just finished up the second to last Known World game, http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=187834, on 36 hour phases, which we probably played a few years further than we might have for that honor. This leaves one 10-day phase game in a still relatively early state, http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=187877
