Either y'all are looking shit up before you post or some of you have way too much walking-around knowledge. It's pretty impressive. So really, what makes you smarter than the 99%? Where the fuck did I talk about rioters?
JamesYanik (548 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
"What's funny is that it's conservatives that whine about "sticks and stones" when they're called out for being racists"

the complaints about "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" is directly addressing rioters telling them to use speech not violence

"equity is stupid. You need to compensate for biases driven by societal norms and structural oppression."

equity is fairness, it's just your opinion that is stupid. not all white males have "privilege" many came to this country well after slavery, and there were plenty of Irish and Italian catholics who were oppressed. But we don't care about asking THOSE questions, we just say "white males" because why not make generalizations?

"But yeah equality is important."

now you're a hypocrite
JamesYanik (548 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
oh sorry you're not a hypocrite, i thought you said "But yeah equity is important" but instead you continued your socialist rants. nevermind

Yeah nah I get all the privilege I can. And then some more, and then smore . The extra I use to grind your skulls into the dust and make slaves of your children.

I'm sorry, i can't get past the first 30 seconds... Smug face makes me want to punch the guy...

Yes, in the sense that we know from studies of play that interacting with other children in an unstructured format (where they have to make up how they are going to play themselves, rather than being given a game like baseball to follow the rules of)

Several play deprived individuals have gone on to go on killing sprees because they lack a healthy way of dealing with stress. (Not saying all play deprived children will go on mass shootings, but merely that all the people who do tend to have some play deprivation)

So there are interesting changes, but i can't watch the rest for fear of breaking my phone...

And @fiedler "Hurr durr privilege is a bad thing.

Yeah nah I get all the privilege I can. And then some more..."

Nobody says privilege makes you bad. It would be great if everyone had all the privilege.

But being privileged does have consequences. Like thinking that something isn't a problem when it isn't a problem *for you*.

(Also, obviously if everyone was privileged then nobody would have these problems, and we'd live in some kind of paradise utopia... But we're a but too competitive for that)

@James, stop fucking that straw man, it's disgusting. Get a room.
JamesYanik (548 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
if you want complete equality, you want socialism!

that's not a strawman... is it?
I mean, are we even "well after slavery"? Sure, the 13th Amendment prohibited slavery without a preceding criminal conviction, but it sure as shit didn't take people very long to figure out the loophole in that statement.
"if you want complete equality, you want socialism!

that's not a strawman... is it?"

No, you'd want communism, or a hive-mind. Socialism and communism are pretty different things. It's kind of annoying to deal with someone who still conflates them.
Condescension (10 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
Where did I say I want complete equality?
Condescension (10 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
If you advocate for complete equity, you'd want a government that only refers to you by number run entirely by unemotional machines with no discretion. See what you can do when you take people's positions to massive extremes?
Condescension (10 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
"well after slavery" my ass, people above the age of 40 were alive at the same time as former slaves.
Condescension (10 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
Also, the notion that because there's no slavery, things are sufficiently equal is fucking absurd.
JamesYanik (548 D)
17 Feb 17 UTC
"People today are willing to deal with less shit and more likely to aggressively pursue an equitable society"

"If you advocate for complete equity, you'd want a government that only refers to you by number run entirely by unemotional machines with no discretion."

actually, it'd be one where they only interact with us when our rights are being violated, or somethings up with roads, the military, or taxes.

also i'd rather they be unemotional machines than the corrupt morons we have now so....

"See what you can do when you take people's positions to massive extremes?"

i'm fine with complete fairness. i'm just not sure we have the same view of what's fair.

"well after slavery" my ass, people above the age of 40 were alive at the same time as former slaves."

former slaves =/= slavery occurring.

My grandparents were in no way benefiting from the enslavement of others, in fact some of my relatives were being butchered in Europe around that time.

"Also, the notion that because there's no slavery, things are sufficiently equal is fucking absurd."

i'll admit things we're unfair, and i still have some problems with discrepancies in society today, especially with state housing laws and some financial practices. These discriminate again blacks and native americans in particular.

i do not however blame white males. i blame individuals. many of them are white males, many of them are actually dead and gone, and only left bad legal practices.

also: "sufficiently equal" is an arbitrary phrase. WHO decides when things are "equal enough" (here's a hint, it's the people demanding free shit)

then some conservatives say that they shouldn't be violent, and the reaction is "punch nazis!!! because everyone who disagrees with me is a trump supporting nazi!!!"

but instead of recognizing problems within the modern left, people on this forum call the conservatives snowflakes, and rant on about how equality=goodness and how large differences in income MUST mean something evil has taken place.

many times it has, i won't be naive but you should:
1. point at individuals
2. give evidence
3. don't blame races/sexes
4. accept when someone has simply worked hard to get ahead.

inequality is meaningless without proof of unfairness (inequity)
"My grandparents were in no way benefiting from the enslavement of others, in fact some of my relatives were being butchered in Europe around that time."

They probably benefitted from opportunities that were denied to others on the basis of those others' skin tone, though. They may have benefitted from the GI Bill, or the ability to move where they wanted and build up equity in a more valuable home, or even just on the basis that they were less likely to interact with the criminal justice system, they had a greater safety net than a similarly situated person of color would have.

Also, slavery was still occurring in the 40's. I'd say it's still occurring, actually. We just make the slavers go through the kabuki of the criminal justice system first.
JamesYanik (548 D)

"They probably benefitted from opportunities that were denied to others on the basis of those others' skin tone, though."

would that be the Irish being the extremely non-oppressed? or how about the Italian catholics - nothing bad happened to them.

"They may have benefitted from the GI Bill"

nope try again

"or the ability to move where they wanted and build up equity in a more valuable home"

hahaha that might have happened on my dad's side but definitely not on my mom's. besides, there were black people who began to make money, get higher education, live VERY well off with the only discrimination being social in America from the 40s onwards. (i am in no way saying that is good, i'm just saying that they were socially oppressed, whereas many people with white skin were socially and economically oppressed)

"or even just on the basis that they were less likely to interact with the criminal justice system"

my grandad got a patent for something he made stolen and his court appeals tossed out, and i know for a fact on my dad's side we had troubles.

"Also, slavery was still occurring in the 40's. I'd say it's still occurring, actually. We just make the slavers go through the kabuki of the criminal justice system first."

if we're going to call the justice system "full of slavers" then i feel mildly inclined to say all gov't taxes are slavery.

i have presented the same standard of proof that you have, and i also have given "slavery" the same qualification as you have.

Also, look into interactions with the criminal justice system, and instead of just stratifying results off of color of skin, look at it by income level: THAT'S where the correlation really is. Economic persecution is the biggie in this country, but i'm not going to deduct the asian kid 50 points from his SAT and give the Black kid next door 140 points just because the Black kid had relatives who were oppressed by an entirely different subset of people.
JamesYanik (548 D)

those damn asians who wrote the constitution to oppress black people.

white people come from a diverse set of backgrounds and did not all come to this country at the same point in history, and each have their own individual levels of persecution from different sets of historical figures.

trying to correct racial problems by punishing the entirety of a perceived race will definitely attack innocent people, and is wrong.

meanwhile, i love the intentional misuse/bastardizing of the word slavery, which is inadvertently desensitizing it. Neat-o!

the best thing we can do is try to eliminate persecution in our legal (and justice) systems wherever we see it, and teach kids to respect one another.

your daddy was the same skin color of a guy who owned my daddy or wouldn't let him come into his shop, so you specifically must pay for their misdeeds. THE INNOCENT MUST PAY FOR THE SINS OF THEIR FATHERS IN BLOOOO-oh shit i'm an awful human being

Also: anyone with German/Russian heritage, or anyone who was living in the united state EVER you owe me money because you oppressed me. I'm only 1/16 cherokee though, so you only owe me 1/16 of what you guys took, i'll collect the rest of the shit you owe me form other privilege points later. In the meantime, my religious ancestors were abrahamic so i need to go kill my firstborn son to avenge some old blood debts. Aren't you guys so glad we lived in a civilized society?

In response to a thread I posted earlier, titled, "Italy Opening Strategy: Early Attack on France?," I decided to post another thread regarding Italy. When I started on this site years ago, everybody and their mama was playing, a lot of live games happening. I took a few years off and now that I'm back there seems to be a huge drop off in total games being played, and there are NO live games at all. I havent seen one I havent created. None of mine ever get full, or even a few people. What the heck happened?

Incorporating WWI Strategies Into Diplomacy: Could It Work?
Diplomacy is set in WWI. Even though it is up to players to play how they like, might it be sensible and feasible to incorporate real-world strategies and plans from WWI into the game? For example, could Germany try the Schlieffen Plan against France? Should Italy go straight for Trieste, as it did in WWI? And should Russia seek to defend Serbia against Austria-Hungary? Thoughts?
