Is it just me, or is it dumb that you can retreat into other people's territory?
I know it's the rules of the game and all, but I feel like it would make more sense if you could only retreat into your own territory or neutral territory.

Which is more balanced 1-1?
How are the two 1-1s shaping up in terms of balance? The consensus on AvF seems to be that Austria usually wins. What about IvG? Do we have any stats to suggest which is a more balanced match?

Known World 901 quirk:
I'm currently participating in two ongoing games on the new world map. 15 different empires to start, so I should have a 1/15 odds of drawing any empire. I drew the same empire twice in a row... That should be a 1/225 occurrence if the draws were random, or even less if it weights other empires higher after I've drawn that specific empire (to increase variety, which I believe mods have confirmed happens, at least in Classic). Should I play the lottery, or is this a bug?
TrPrado (461 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Repeat drawings happen frequently. The feature where the more you draw a country the less likely you drew it again was only weighted based on finished games. And from my understanding that has also been removed so it's purely random every time.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
So, it was a 1/225 that happened. Should have played the lottery...
Lethologica (203 D)

Your odds of drawing the same empire twice in a row are 1/15, not 1/225, because you can draw the same empire twice no matter which empire you draw initially. More unlikely things than that happen to you literally every day.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
The odds are 1/15 for it occuring once, not twice in a row. If you roll a 15 sided die twice and you roll a 1 two times in a row, the chances of it happening are 1/225.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Jan 17 UTC
^ this.

After you've drawn an empire the first time. The chances of you drawing it become 1/1, 100% chance, because you know you drew it.

Then there is a 1/15 chance of drawing it again.

Alternatively you can think of it as the 15 chances (each 1/15) of you drawing any empire. 15* 1/15 = 1.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Jan 17 UTC
Matticus. The odds of you rolling two 1s on a 15 sided dice are 1/225. That is not the situation.

The odds of you rolling any double on a 15 sided dice are 1/15z

Matticus13 (2844 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
I joined both games at roughly the same time. I didn't know what empire I was going to get. The outcome was unknown. Like I rolled two 15 sided dice and they both came up one.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Which equates to 1/225.

Or maybe I'm wrong. I'm solid in math, but it was never my best subject.
wpfieps (442 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Matticus, the odds of drawing the same country twice in a row are 1/15. The odds drawing France twice in a row are 1/225. Similarly, the odds of drawing China twice in a row are also 1/225.
slypups (1889 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Yeah 1 in 15 is right. And those odds aren't that crazy. If all players play in two games, odds are high someone will draw the same country twice. I'm in three Known World games at the moment (what can I say - I want to explore this map), and playing three different countries.
Deeply_Dippy (458 D)

Don't dice have to be even-numbered to work properly? A 15-sided dice would come to rest on it's base with no upper surface showing.

Maybe it would be like those crazy D4 dice in D&D - but not a pyramid, obvs.
Claesar (4665 D)

Dippy, a quick google search reveals you're far from the first to ponder this problem:"

The odds of drawing any two nations twice is 1/15 per the explanations given. The odds of drawing, say, specifically, India each time is 1/15 * 1/15, or 1/225.

The odds of drawing the India in THREE GAMES OUT OF FOUR, which is what happened to me, are 1/15 * 1/15 * 1/15 *4, because there are four combinations of when I could conceivably draw India. Sooooo...thanks, random draw! 4:3375 odds of me getting India, specifically, in three games out of four.

Matticus, Orathaic explained it perfectly above.

To elaborate, the odds of a player drawing "any" country two times in a row are simply the odds that the first country drawn (which is a 100% probability, because there is 100% chance that you will get one of the 15 countries when you sign up for a game) is now drawn again, so 1 * 1/15 = 1/15.

Now, this is why you are probably confused, Matticus. If you had to bet money BEFORE you drew the first country that you would draw a SPECIFIC country (let's say France) two times in a row, then your odds of winning that bet would only be 1/15 * 1/15 = 1/225. This is because the first country you draw could also be Spain, Turan, India, or one of any 14 countries other than France, but you don't win the bet if Spain, Turan or India are drawn two times in a row. You only win if France is drawn two times in a row. No odds maker would let you make the bet after the first half of the results are in.

But this is not what your "bug" question suggests. You are thinking there is a bug because you drew "any" country two times in a row. That will happen quite often, or 1 in 15 times.

Now the chance of drawing "any" country THREE times in a row would be 1 * 1/15 * 1/15 = 1/255. So, draw the same country again, one more time, and then you'll have reached your 1/255 probability. If that starts happening to a lot of players, and not just to you, over a short period of time, then perhaps there is a bug.

Thank you Claesar.

I'm glad that there are imaginative people in this word.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Got it. If I would have bet on that specific country twice the odds would have been 1/225. The odds of drawing ANY country twice is 1/15. So, if I draw them again the next time I join, it will be a 1/225 event. *Cue rainbow* Thank you for the detailed explanation.
TrPrado (461 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Any combination of two countries has a 1/225 chance of occurrence though. And that number doesn't really matter to the algorithm anyway since it only cares about one game.
TrPrado (461 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Any particular combination of countries is just as likely as any other particular combination of countries, so drawing the same country a few times in a row doesn't really mean anything. You have 1/15 chance to draw a country. Don't be surprised with the one you get.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
Some are 2/225.
Matticus13 (2844 D)
08 Jan 17 UTC
You could get (1)China/(2)India or (1)India/(2)China. There are two different ways to get that outcome.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Jan 17 UTC
TrPrado's point is that if you throw 1 die 10 times, the chance that you throw the sequence 6666666666 is equal to the chance that you throw the sequence 1465342343 *in that order*.

In fact, if 15 players play 2 games together, the odds that none of them play the same country in both games is very, very close to 1/e, which is less than 40%. This is a version of what's known as the derangement problem--thanks for bringing it up, I learned something about combinatorics today.
