Is it just me, or is it dumb that you can retreat into other people's territory?
I know it's the rules of the game and all, but I feel like it would make more sense if you could only retreat into your own territory or neutral territory.

So Long World Diplomacy IX
As some of you may have heard, the flawed World Dip IX map is going away. I made a game if you're interested in taking a final swing at this sucker: http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=188080
slypups (1889 D)
04 Jan 17 UTC
Word is that ongoing games will be allowed to finish. I think someone else discussed making a Pacifist game on the World Dip map to preserve the map that way, but that's not my thing - just interested in a final real game.
DammmmDaniel (100 D)
04 Jan 17 UTC
wasn't necessarily completely pacifist people acted like the UN in the sense that matters were voted on. There still were winners and losers.
Kakarroto (128 D)
04 Jan 17 UTC
there is a game going on right now that is called "that's the end of the world as we know it" and is seen as the last game by the players in there ... though if your game is going to be, then it will lose it's title I think.
@Daniel, were people able to vote on mobilizing troops and killing countries?
So in other words could somebody eventually disobey the vote and solo, or what do you mean by "there were still winners and losers""

HoM, I played a UN game a while ago, and people did go rogue, but the UN generally passed resolutions condemning them and proceeded to butcher rogue countries, leaving them with 2 SCs. It got boring after a while (10 day phases), so we drew without a single elimination.
MajorMitchell (1605 D)
05 Jan 17 UTC
Good on you for making it SoS scoring, I'm in.
@Leon, right but from the start if you were Argentina could you put forward a bill for the elimination of Brazil, and then get people to sign it, in return for backing their bills to defeat their respective neighbors?
Or are the bills supposed to be realistic as opposed to centered about winning the game.
wpfieps (442 D)
05 Jan 17 UTC
Shame on you for having made it SoS scoring, otherwise I would have been in.
slypups (1889 D)

SoS is especially good on large maps. Keeps it worthwhile to keep little players around - big fan.

"@Leon, right but from the start if you were Argentina could you put forward a bill for the elimination of Brazil, and then get people to sign it, in return for backing their bills to defeat their respective neighbors?"

You could, but in our game we had a constitution that prohibited wars of aggression and required a 2/3 vote to change, so no one actually put forward a bill like you described except to take down rogue nations.
I see. So if you did put something like that forward, you would probably be voted to be killed instead as an "aggressor"?
that's boring...
MajorMitchell (1605 D)

Well we are hardly getting a rush of players to play this game. It's not me, it's them !!!!
MajorMitchell (1605 D)

Only one more to make four, I don't think this game will start, use seven days as a joining phase length is a good tip
slypups (1889 D)
06 Jan 17 UTC
Hopefully people are just waiting until closer to the final hour to sign up. If not, I'll try again with a longer lead time, and bump the thread once or twice to help it out. Are there different settings that would appeal more to others? Anonymous maybe? Just not gunboat - I don't get the point of Diplomacy if you can't talk - may as well just play with a bunch of computer opponents at that point.
The computers that try to play diplomacy really suck. At least we don't all make stupid moves.
slypups (1889 D)
06 Jan 17 UTC
Yes - true. Only some of us, some of the time. You would think someone could make a decent gunboat AI, though. It would be horrible at real diplomacy, but just tactics should be doable. You would need to add some random element though, or the predictability would work against the AI.
MajorMitchell (1605 D)

O wow, ckroberts joined the game but then left it. There's a chap with an excellent game. For a moment I thought I could make it simple and just ask the Mods to transfer my buy in points to ckr and save time

Out of curiosity, what's flawed about it?
Deinodon (379 D(B))
06 Jan 17 UTC
@Halls of M There were actually different factions, sort of a Hawk faction and a Dove faction. The doves had the most votes, but the hawks were in the background, always trying to rally support behind a bill that would for all intents and purposes allow some nations to grow at the detriment of others. There was a lot of anti-imperialist rhetoric being effectively bandied about by the doves, while the hawks would try to come up with reasonable sounding BS to support their bills. Towards the end, not enough people were even paying enough attention to vote, so the game became stagnant.

The amount of press that built up was epic. I joined the game half-way through, and had to spend a day reading just to get up to speed on everything.

Which is more balanced 1-1?
How are the two 1-1s shaping up in terms of balance? The consensus on AvF seems to be that Austria usually wins. What about IvG? Do we have any stats to suggest which is a more balanced match?

Known World 901 quirk:
I'm currently participating in two ongoing games on the new world map. 15 different empires to start, so I should have a 1/15 odds of drawing any empire. I drew the same empire twice in a row... That should be a 1/225 occurrence if the draws were random, or even less if it weights other empires higher after I've drawn that specific empire (to increase variety, which I believe mods have confirmed happens, at least in Classic). Should I play the lottery, or is this a bug?

I am looking for 6 people with 80%RR or higher to play against me in a "classroom" game of sorts. I'm going to be mentored by an undisclosed mod during the game, and I would like some good competition for this round. Game ID is below.
