Being a Diplomat
I've finally hoarded enough points to achieve the elusive label of "Diplomat" on my profile again. For some reason though, I'm not really all that thrilled with the "upgrade" from the previous rank.

Soloing without building fleets
I'm curious how often powers can solo without building an additional fleet. I'm also wondering which powers could accomplish this feat. From what I can think of, there are only two powers that could accomplish it, Austria and Russia.

Obama tried same thing as Trump and got blocked
Obama repeatedly tried to give tax breaks for companies that "insource' jobs to the U.S. from overseas while eliminating tax deductions for companies that move jobs abroad.

Has anyone else noticed the tremendous uptick in Donald Trump themed game names since he won the US presidential election? What do you think of that? Not seeing that many Justin Trudeau themed games.

I hate getting Italy in classic Diplomacy
Italy is a dog of a country and that's being unkind to dogs

@ Nikola. I respect your obvious expertise and experience at Diplomacy. So I looked at your past games to look at your wins with Italy. My first observation is that you play almost exclusively no press, or gunboat style games. Which I very rarely play, I play mostly full press games. So unable to find in the most recent four or so pages of your previous games a full press game where you win with Italy, I had a look at a win in a no press game.
All I can see in that game strategy is a basic attack Austria, and a very good campaign that captures all of the Balkans, France obligingly fights England and gives Italy plenty of time, and you simply push out into Southern Russia, into Germany and move rapidly West to attack France.
So I did note the consistent building of armies, but saw little else that I haven't seen before.
So my question is, do you have a good example of one of your previous games that is full press not a 5 minute live type game, etc, where you win with Italy playing a more complex strategy that illustrates what CS described as the influencing if the two ART & EFG "theatres of action " and where there are several changes alliances etc ? Those are the games I want to study to learn from
No, so, my advice to you would be - keep it simple. :)

Oh I intend to keep it extremely simple the next few times I play Italy.. I will treat Italy with the contempt I currently have for the cursed poisoned chalice. When I got bored with that I may go through the play experimentally stage. There's a dichotomy I have going with Italy, one side is stronger now, the " No point in even trying with Italy" side, the opposite side, " Learn to play Italy better" side influences me enough to read the posts in this thread and give attention and thought to the good ones. I think the best post so far is by CSteinhardt. I keep going back to read it again & again.

Thanks uclabb that looks like the sort of game I want to look at more. Still have to go back to ssorenn's game ..been thinking about that game.. Same start as Nicola.. attack Austria in spring 01.. but your ride of the alliance shifts had a lot more switches than Nicola's game
CSteinhardt mentioned the attack Austria from the get go as only being successful one third of the time and didn't appear to regard it highly...
I've tried lots of different openings with italy and I'm not a fan of attacking Austria in spring 01
I've used the army to Piedmont a lot, and tried going / not going for Marseilles moves.. I tried armies to Tuscany and Apulia as a totally non threatening opening to both France and Austria.

CSteinhardt discussed the two groups of three.. RAT & FEG .. I've had a few games where one of these groups has a country that plays really badly / NMR's then goes CD... For example England..or Turkey, and the other two make a non aggression pact / soft alliance ... and Italy just doesn't seem to have the grunt to launch an offensive against a stronger opponent as other countries ( when I have it / them )

Another thing I noticed was a preparedness to use an army to capture Tunis in 01, and maybe this is one of my stumbling blocks, I virtually never do that, I much prefer to keep the armies in italy and use a fleet for Tunis, I think it's one of a very few sc's that is so well set up to be used by fleets not armies, why would you ever use an army.. I'll convoy an army to Albania, Greece much more readily than to Tunis

I don't think you can make up your mind about whether to attack Austria until you have engaged with the players. The best policy is to lean to an alliance with Austria. I don't like to put an army into Tunis either. It removes the option of an early attack west. If you put a fleet into Tunis, you can move to Western Med in Spring 1902. Maybe A Ven-Pie; A Apu-Ven; F Nap-Tyn; F Tun-Wes. From there you move to GOL and Tuscany to set up a convoy to Mar or Spain. You need an alliance with Germany or England or both before executing, imo.

The only game I've ever solo'd with Italy was Public Press and four years ago, so I'm not sure how much of it can be applied to other games. In retrospect, though, the popcorn-munching drama is pretty amusing.

@_eturnage... Well done in that game.. If I was looking for a game that showed examples of play consistent with the comments made by CSteinhardt, then that game is an excellent one to use.
You made no move in spring 01 against France or Austria, a good cautious, patient first two moves. Then the early game struggle through to Mid game.. Brilliant.. the convoy army to Albania, move army to Trieste in spring, capture Serbia from Turkey in the Autumn.. excellent example of CSteinhardt's comments on a small force in a strategically important position... two armies only, but Serbia is such a vital sc to control, and the following sequences of the fight against Turkey, Russia.
It looked like the player with Austria was not the sharpest tool in the shed but you managed to use his and your units with superb efficiency.
You were lucky with the way the FEG trio played and took good advantage of that and then the late Mid game to end joust with France while your armies did their thing & the fleet moves.in the Mediterranean...great stuff, the setting up of a solid defense.. covering Tuscany, ...That's a game that ticks most of the boxes.

There have been enough games played on this site that you can find evidence of the most inept strategies working if you look hard enough. I've had games where I've played damned well and lost, and won games where I've played with a similar level of concentration as a 13 year-old boy in an English class whose view out of the window encompasses the girl's tennis courts.

As similes go it is a tad clunky, but stems from personal experience. It also goes some way to explaining why I never properly learned the differences between similes and metaphors.

Italy is a great country to play as it gives you plenty of time to get to know people before committing to a course of action. I find it really quite relaxing. Sit back, let people make their mistakes, and reap the benefits.

Trump to dump Pence after inauguration?
After appointing a Supreme Court justice and a big tax cut, Trump might be replaced by Pence (due to conflict of interest of biz dealings), but what if Trump replaced Pence with a Democrat first? Then Trump is immune from investigation because Pence is no longer there to replace him. Genius?

I've come up with a great idea to revitalize the site and expand the fanbase.
It's called Webdip The Musical. It would be much more interesting than adding new maps or new features and might also allow people to rant about their political opinions in a way that's easier to ignore. I have contacted the mods and several have agreed to donate glitter.

Another potential idea is mafia the musical.
