Situation on the board
Couldn't find an answer anywhere...
How do I plot the situation? Is it done automatically or do I need a mapper app or something like that?

Is Russia that bad of a country?
So they're in Syria. So they took Crimea. So they attacked Georgia.

I've played more games on the world map than on any other variant, and the fact that it is played on the entire world map drew me into diplomacy and made me stick around.

Sure. Maybe our creator just thinks it's not as useful? Perhaps the new map is more enticing and would serve as a complete replacement for the World Dip map but I doubt it.

If there are "issues" with the map prompting it's removal, then put notes on the map "we think it's imbalanced, but due to popular demand it's left on the site".

But Once a year or so I get roped into a god-awful world map game (on another site...), and I will feel sad if it goes away and I never get the chance to be roped into a god-awful world map game here.

Tolstoy I think this thread is very much misinforming the general forum as some of the +1s may be people who weren't involved in the variant discussion forum enough to know that 901 would be replacing world. Some of them may have different feelings if they knew.

The World map is unfair to new members. There are a series of incorrect borders that allow movements that should not be possible or prevent ones that should be possible. If you have a new member join world, get into a point where they should be able to win or break a stalemate and have that fucked up by incorrect borders why would they stay?

Maps with tribal knowledge just don't make the game fair to members. And since the entire point of the mod/admin team is the keep games fair for all players it seems pretty reasonable they are working to get rid of this map in favor of a better one. If you'd like to harass them about something it should probably be for leaving a broken, unbalanced map, that probably lost the site members available for so long.

"It can co-exist peacefully with any number of other maps!"

webDiplomacy is a site for Classic and a few of the best variants. If you want any number of other maps, vDiplomacy's just round the corner - we'd be happy to have you!

"the fact that it is played on the entire world map drew me into diplomacy and made me stick around."

KW901 is fairly close to a full world map - it's missing Australia and the Americas, but in doing this it retains one of the massively important parts of Diplomacy, which is having the Sea surround one major continent. Almost every map with multiple continents (including WIX and WWIV) have big sea stalemate problems. 901 also has a transform rule, which is a great way of allowing you to change unit composition - something that is also a big problem on almost all large variants.

But if you do want to play World Maps - there are plenty on vDip! WWIV games are much more incredible to play in than WIX games, because of the number of players and the fact it's much better balanced, but if you're not looking for large player numbers, there are a fair number of smaller player World variants too, plus of course there will still be WIX.

"Why kill it? It isn't harming anyone being there. Dumb."

Adding in a new variant of similar size and player count splits the playerbase who want to play on large variants, making it harder to get games started. Thus, it's better to remove one when adding a new one, and it's better for webDiplomacy to have the better balanced and better designed variant.

But of course, it's not dead! You can always play it on vDip.

"Is this same discussion being taken for the American Empire map? Because that is the one map I refuse to play due to balancing issues."

I'd also suggest replacing FotAE, but if this is the response to removing the most unbalanced variant on the site, I imagine members would be even angrier about that happening.

"They all live in a shed together. They interact with people far too much."

Can confirm. Wasn't a fun time.

"World isn't horribly unbalanced, and I see no reason why it should be removed."

It's far less balanced and has much worse design that KW901, as mentioned above.

"Phase it out, get rid of it. It's a horrid variant. But if you for some reason still want to play it, you can always come over to vDip."

+1 Kaner

"There's been a live world game arranged before. "

I should point out that that game took a week to fill and half the players went into CD in the first year.

If I recall my webDiplomacy history correctly, WIX was introduced to webDip back in 2010 - this was back before vDip existed, in the early times of OliDip, so there were far fewer variants available. Even then, it was only introduced because Kestas decided against three variants that were voted higher than it (Imperial, FvA, and Chaos) due to messy coding or due to them being too chaotic (in Chaos' case).

How to stop being garbage?
I've basically noticed that whether or not I get 2v1'd in 1901 or '02 basically comes down to a crapshoot. I find it's very difficult to get conversations and discussion rolling, especially in lower-bet games. Anyone got tips?

Funny business or just my usual paranoia?
I've noticed a trend in gunboat games....when entering orders -- especially during '01 -- a given great power will click SAVE instead of READY. More often than not, an adjacent great power will do the same. Amazingly, these powers don't move on each other. While it may be frowned upon, is this a way of signalling a wish for non-aggression/cooperation? ...and if it's not...why do it?

...and yes the walls talk to me...sometimes in harsh tones.

Communication Block and Mute Player Inquiry.
Hey I am wondering if muting a player in a game can carry over into actual private messages and forum post messages? I received a private message for actual in game conversations where I am not even a player in the game.

Can people be muted/have blocked communications out of actual diplomacy games? Does anyone know if this is possible?

ACA Premium Reimbursement
Today I was refunded a decent amount of last year's insurance premium through my company because our insurer didn't spend enough of their income from premiums on claims. What is going on here that some people are seeing their premiums double while some insurers literally don't have enough claims. Is it just happenstance that this provider only has healthy people? A civil, informed discussion would be appreciated, if at all possible.
