Feature discussion: newbie diplomacy
So, one feature that would be amazing for new players is a "test the waters" mode for diplomacy.

Something that new players could try to see if they like Diplomacy, without the commitment to a four month game checking the site every day, or setting aside five hours for a live game. Maybe it's a short game up until 1902? I have no idea. Ideas?

How do people communicate in Gunboat?
I'm playing in a couple gunboat games, and it seems like other players are working well together, with regards to support and such. I trust they are not messaging each other, and so I would like to know how they figure out what the other players are going to do.

1) Watching what supports were ordered (check the Orders tab or the Big Map to see support orders that were not accepted). Sometimes if you support someone somewhere two turns in a row they get the message

2) Blind hope based on press games. Example:
Juggernaughts are a common thing in press games. As Turkey or Russia it's a lot easier to just hope the other person is thinking the same thing than, say, AR or IT alliances.

3) Experience of gunboat. Sometimes there's certain gunboat tactics/strategies you see over and over and you can predict them and support them, or leave them DMZ.

etc

Sometimes it's blind luck.

I like DMZ'ing Galicia as Russia, no matter what, press game or not.
So in Gunboats I'll just leave it DMZ and hope Austria does too; I mean there's plenty that Vienna can do that's not going to Galicia, so it's not SUPER uncommon.

When it works it looks like we're super buddies out of the blue
When it doesn't work it looks like normal gunboat play
lulz

but don't waste their time, so if you have a complaint make sure it's reasonable.
Valis nailed it. All I'll add is remember that everyone on the board is in it for themselves. At first, anyway. The mad scramble to form an alliance with remaining nations to stop someone from winning is always kind of fun.

Ah thanks. I forgot about checking the orders that others have written.

At the risk of beating a dead horse... support holds and support moves are used for communication. A good gunboat player will see what moves were entered last round. You also can move into an enemy is hopes that another country will see that and help you next time. It is not uncommon (with moves all over the board) for a country to try and communicate by moving in while another country tries to communicate by helping them in.

This gives the appearance of cheating or psychic phenomenon.

SuperSteve said the right things. Those are things to know and look for. Always study the map, think what you would do in their position and some moves are just obvious to see. Know your enemy and their enemies/friendlies. The saying goes, the enemy of your enemy is your friend. now towards end of match. It should be basic knowledge (some would think) that the biggest/closest one to win should be the focus of attacks.

Ill add a one things to supersteves list. When a friendly is established and you get poke by a unit your pretty much surrounding and seems pointless and "out of the blue". He's asking you to disband his unit so he can rebuild what they need.

Creating an app for webDip.
Because of my schedule, I have gotten into the habit of using my phone for webDiplomacy, but the web format isn't the best for a small screen on a phone.
This thread is more about a discussion on how the app should look, support, etc.
