'Twas the week before finals...
...and all through the town, not a fuck could be given, not a fuck could be found.

In order to distract me from my impending doom and the numerous professors attempting to dismantle my life in a single blow, who thinks they have the best not-giving-a-shit-about-finals story?

Fleet Moscow
Why can I not build a fleet in Moscow? It borders the Caspian and could be used in an attack against Turkey. I realise that there is a rule saying that units can't moved to unnamed spaces on the board, like Ireland, but why not move down the coast to Sevastopol and then to Armenia? This wouldn't be a useful move, but should it be allowed according to the rules?

@redhouse oh, wow. Yeah, that's pretty much what I was wondering. I'm still a bit confused over whether or not it could be allowed- that article states my question pretty well but it doesn't really answer it in a convincing way, at least to me.
arborinius (173 D)

The rules states that "Bulgaria, Spain and St. Petersburg: These are the only provinces that have two separately identified coasts." What about provinces that have two seperately UN-identified coasts?

Moscow does not border a Sea. The Caspian is not a sea, otherwise it would be marked as such on the board.

@Phil a s

yes, the rules clearly state that "any location on the mapboard that is not named cannot be occupied". But, similar to the argument made in the article redhouse linked to, the Caspian Sea isn't marked any differently than the other bodies of water. If it isn't a body of water, shouldn't it be filled in with Black, or simply not on the board.

It is a body of water. It is not a sea. Go try to sail a fleet from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea.

While this game is reasonably far from it's roots, it still pretends to be a simulation of Europe before the 1st world war.

"It is a body of water. It is not a sea."

Sorry, why does this matter?
phil_a_s (0 DX)
07 Dec 14 UTC
It matters because there are practical impossibilities with moving a large set of ships between two unconnected bodies of water. Especially if we're talking about the early 20th century.
arborinius (173 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC
I'm not really talking about moving fleets from the Black to the Caspian, more about building fleets in the Moscow province and then moving them along the coast of the Caspian.
Yoyoyozo (95 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC
The way I see it, it is like Bulgaria. You can't go from aegean sea to bulgaria to black sea because the fleet entered on the south coast and there's no way to "sail" to Bulgaria's black sea coast.

Same goes with moscow. There's no point in building a fleet there because it'll be trapped. It would have no way of getting to black sea because sevastopol has two coasts. On with black sea and one with Caspian.
Yoyoyozo (95 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC
Same with spain. You can't access the western Mediterranean from Spain's north coast.
cardcollector (1270 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC
Not only that, but building a fleet in Moscow would be pretty pointless, as it would be stuck with no access to the Black Sea or Mediterranean. Even in the modern map the Caspian is only connected to the Black Sea through a river through the Volga. Assuming that fleets can't go through on the Classic map as they do on the Modern map, it's a pretty stupid build.
arborinius (173 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC
Yeah, it's a really stupid build, but would it technically be allowed?

arborinius: This is an on-line implementation of a board game. Allan B. Calhamer designed Diplomacy. His word is final. So no, you can't build F Mos. Unless you're playing Ankara Crescent . . .

OK, thank you for clarifying that for me. I'll look into Ankara Crescent, it sounds interesting.

2014 Webdiplomacy Tournament Update
Round 1 has completed and I have updated the standings of each player in the game. In addition, I have sent out the next wave of passwords for round 2's games to those individuals responsible for creating boards 4, 5 and 6 of the tournament. Congratulations to those topping their respective boards! I have also included the scoring updates in greater detail below.

Discount for taking over left position
Is it still under consideration to allow people to take of left positions for half price? This could encourage a lot more players to join games in progress. The pot has already been paid, so it's bonus money for the current players, and incentive to come in at a disadvantage (often).

I'm giving up on the BBC. I used to think the BBC was a half-decent source of *relatively* unbiased news, but I realise that's no longer the case and may not have been for some time.
