'Twas the week before finals...
...and all through the town, not a fuck could be given, not a fuck could be found.

In order to distract me from my impending doom and the numerous professors attempting to dismantle my life in a single blow, who thinks they have the best not-giving-a-shit-about-finals story?

Fleet Moscow
Why can I not build a fleet in Moscow? It borders the Caspian and could be used in an attack against Turkey. I realise that there is a rule saying that units can't moved to unnamed spaces on the board, like Ireland, but why not move down the coast to Sevastopol and then to Armenia? This wouldn't be a useful move, but should it be allowed according to the rules?

Yes it is. No, it isn't.

"It's too late to stop climate change, but if we don't stop spewing greenhouse gases, the climate change is going to be a hell of a lot worse."

But that's impossible. Even if Europe and North America returned to the Stone Age tomorrow, the emissions from Asia would be enough to keep the crisis going. Assuming one exists outside of natural cycles, or course.

Developing nations see Western attempts at emission control as a way for the already industrialized nations to maintain their edge. Not just in things like in manufacturing, but just the general quality of life things that an abundant, constant flow of energy provides us. For over a hundred years electricity has been taken for granted in much of the West. Huge swaths of the world just got light-bulbs in the last few decades. These developing nations will not accept the cuts necessary to stop climate change. And why would they, from their own self-interested perspective? Why should they agree to hold themselves back?

In short, if man made climate change exists, we're already doomed.

Certainly if the rock bottom intellectual quality on display here is what we have for dealing with this crisis, then we are doomed. I am astonished that people aren't embarrassed to show their scientific illiteracy in public.

Humanity will revert to the stone age largely because of the stupidity shown here.

@Ogion

The problem with stupid people is that they are too stupid to see their own stupidity. Instead they consider themselves rather smart.

I haven't really been reading this thread, but I always find it amusing to see people calling the other side stupid, and thinking they are so intelligent because of it.

@ JECE
''fulhamish: You claimed at the end of the first page of this thread that NSIDC data disproved Arctic sea ice melting. Here is the real NSIDC data:'

I am afraid you have misquoted my post. Here is the relevant extract from the article which was written in 2007:

‘’Scientists in the US have presented one of the most dramatic forecasts yet for the disappearance of Arctic sea ice. Their latest modeling studies indicate northern polar waters could be ice-free in summers within just 5-6 years.’’

The models were grossly wrong – FACT

I looked at your data too. Firstly I wonder if you noticed the varying abscissa intercepts? Much as I might disagree I suppose there might just be a tenuous argument for not setting this to zero, but to vary this across the individual graphs which make up the series is really in my view rather underhand. Moreover, the lack of error quantification also render this data, as presented, highly problematical.

Further I wonder if you had a chance to look at the data I presented. In any discussion of Global warming and polar ice caps surely one should consider both the Arctic and the Antarctic and arrive at a net figure. You will find that data in my original post.

Discount for taking over left position
Is it still under consideration to allow people to take of left positions for half price? This could encourage a lot more players to join games in progress. The pot has already been paid, so it's bonus money for the current players, and incentive to come in at a disadvantage (often).

I'm giving up on the BBC. I used to think the BBC was a half-decent source of *relatively* unbiased news, but I realise that's no longer the case and may not have been for some time.
