What's the name of a picture/movie that changes and transitions smoothly in a loop?
So what I mean is that you don't really notice it's a loop unless you're paying close attention because the end of the loop fits perfectly on the start of the loop. There's no strong feeling of repetition. Just a 'background' continuously moving.
Just looking for the word for such a thing. I saw one quite a while ago and thought I could use one of those in a design, but now I finally have the time to do something with it, I forgot what it's called :-(

Gunboat: Playing as Russia
When, in a gunboat game, in the Spring 1901 moves, England, Germany, Austria and Turkey all make an anti-Russia opening, what is Russia supposed to do, exactly?

After hearing about that Congo shit I was wondering what other scandals/notorious players/legendary stories there are buried in the annals of this site. I assume some of the elder players would know some of the lore I speak of and can weave some tales of old?

Is it normal for people to sign up for very slow games (10 days/phase) and stay quiet?
I am relatively new to webDip. From the little experience I have here, I get the impression that it is not uncommon for very slow games to be pretty quiet. I've had no replies at all from some parties, even though they are giving orders. Is this usual? I thought very slow games would have lots and lots of diplomatic talk.

Control active game play time option ?
Hello,

What if it was possible to control the time allowed for game play, such as, "game only active between the hours of X & Y". Then shorter phase games could be played more easily and not at strange hours of the night. Thoughts?

Oh right, one last thing. Let's stop using the word "strawman", and start refuting arguments based on reason, or dismissal of specific claims. Designating entire posts "strawmen" destroys meaningful discussion.

Is there any meaning difference between the terms climate change and global warming? Both refer to the same thing and are synonymous in the minds of most people. Why bother trying to insist on speaking only about climate change?
phil_a_s (0 DX)

Because climate change is what the people who study the subject call it, and I'm inclined to use the same terms they do. I also call a black hole a black hole, and not a light-eater or whatever.

There is a meaning difference. Climate change is generally used to refer to major changes to the climate of our planet as a result of human actions (mostly greenhouse gas emissions). Global warming was a term that was used long ago, before people had any idea what climate change would be, and now is only used by the "cold weather disproves global warming" crowd because it is a somewhat easier term to argue against.

So much concern for my intellectual well being on this site. It's amazing really.
Smeck, PE, phil, they're all just lookin' out for me like the older brothers I never had.
Octavious (2802 D)
22 Nov 14 UTC
Plenty of people who have studied the subject are quite happy using both terms, just as most astrophysicists are happy enough using light-years as well as parsecs. I also completely disagree that it is easier to argue against. By itself the words climate change have little meaning as climate has always been changing. It lends itself to the "climate change is natural" argument just as easily as your global warming & cold weather example.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
22 Nov 14 UTC
Valis, you're not the only one I was talking about when I criticized "strawman" as a valid dismissal of an argument.

Octavious, I still think climate change is more accurate than global warming as a term.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
22 Nov 14 UTC
@ Octavious: I'd just like to respond to your remarkably courageous claim that weather in the UK has not become more extreme in recent years.

I have three words for you: Floods. Floods. Floods.
kaner406 (356 D)
22 Nov 14 UTC
Why? Because the MORONS of the world think that the term GLOBAL WARMING means that everything must be getting WARMER - as opposed to CLIMATE CHANGE which indicates that the climate is CHANGING.
Octavious (2802 D)
22 Nov 14 UTC
@ Jamie

The headline floods in Somerset, if that's what you're referring to, were unremarkable. The floods on the levels and moors in 1929 were significantly worse, and there have been floods of similar magnitude roughly every 20 years or so.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
22 Nov 14 UTC
@ Octavious: No, I'm not refering to one single flooding incident. The general trend has increased. We have had a *lot* more significant flooding events in the past 15 or so years than was the case in the decades prior to that.
Octavious (2802 D)

We have had a significant increase in flood events, yes, but they are almost entirely because of building in floodplains. You can point to very few events and say climate change has played a significant part. There is perhaps a bit of mileage to be made with events like Boscastle in rapid response catchments, but they remain very much freak events.

That's partly because England has always had an incredibly stable climate. Until climate change starts playing around with El Nino, England will be somewhat cold and rainy.

I opened this thread just now and began wondering who must have actually have tried to refute Global Warming in order to start this debate. Surprise surprise, it was Tolstoy.

At least I have the reassurance that this is the topic that a majority of the site can agree one.

The Wizard of Oz is fiction dude. In reality straw men do not even have feelings. No one is going to be offended by the use of the word strawman to refer to a fallacy argument. You're being sensitive over nothing.

NFL Pick 'em Week 12: Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow...eh, Buffalo? ;)
So, with Buffalo's game postponed until Monday (and moved to Detroit as, um, Buffalo's sort of buried under snow) and the Raiders having won their first game of the season--and in more than a year!--vs. the rival Chiefs, we enter Week 12. The Lions and Patriots meet in a big clash. Rams//Chargers is an intriguing match-up. Cardinals/Seahawks up in Seattle, and Ravens/Saints on a suddenly-crucial Monday Nighter. Week 12... pick 'em!

The webDiplomacy points ruleset is almost perfect, but...
No one should be rewarded for a game that fails to produce a victor. Everyone who bought into a drawn game and didn't leave should receive an even split of the pot. Otherwise you facilitate awful situations like " just kill Austria, then draw" or more intricate draw pacts, which favor anyone who lucked into a difficult-to-kill nation like France.
