Behaviorism
According to Wikipedia, “The behaviorist school of thought maintains that behaviors as such can be described scientifically without recourse either to internal physiological events or to hypothetical constructs such as thoughts and beliefs.”

Do you think this is appropriate? If so, does that make you optimistic or pessimistic about the prospects for human happiness?
kasimax (243 D)

what does this have to do with "prospects for human happiness"? i don't quite get what you're aiming at.
tendmote (100 D(B))

Well I don't want to ask "would it be good or bad if behaviors as such can be described scientifically without recourse either to internal physiological events or to hypothetical constructs such as thoughts and beliefs." It's either true or not true.

But I can ask, how does that make you feel?
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Aug 14 UTC
It's impossible to get inside somebody's head so it's the best we can do. Behaviorist methods (for correcting behavior) don't always work but they work better than cognitive methods, as far as I can tell. I don't think it indicates much about the prospects of human happiness though. Behaviorism tells us that bad incentives lead to bad behavior.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Aug 14 UTC
And it while it implies that change is possible it doesn't necessarily mean that change is easy, so prospects are at best, cautiously optimistic.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
25 Aug 14 UTC
I think it's idiotic to pretend to know what can and cannot be described scientifically, as if we have already reached the limits of science, and know what they are. My two cents.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Aug 14 UTC
I think the point is that behavior can be described without trying to divine things like something/someone's emotional state or intentions. The claims of behaviorism are pretty limited.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
25 Aug 14 UTC
Isn't someone's emotional state and intention a part of their behavior?
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Aug 14 UTC
Maybe, maybe not. There is no way to know for sure.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
25 Aug 14 UTC
seems kind of outdated/dualist to suggest otherwise in a serious academic discipline
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Aug 14 UTC
Can you elaborate?
qkupp (100 D)

Take a look at Alfie Kohn
Thucydides (864 D(B))
26 Aug 14 UTC
I mean, if behavior is just defined as "what something does," then me feeling a certain way, or thinking a certain thing, are both things that I do. There is no meaningful sense in which a thought is not an action.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
26 Aug 14 UTC
I guess that's not how "behaviorists" view it, which is probably why they seem so discredited to me.
Putin33 (111 D)
26 Aug 14 UTC
That definition of behavior includes movement. Thinking and feeling do not include movement. The point is your thoughts and feelings cannot be verified, so there is no way to tell if you're actually "doing" those things. We have to take your word for it.
Putin33 (111 D)
26 Aug 14 UTC
It'd be helpful to distinguish between external (physiological behavior) and internal (psychological behavior) and simply say that behaviorism believe the former can be observed without reference to the latter.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
26 Aug 14 UTC
You're saying no motion occurs during a thought? I don't believe that. Have you never seen an MRI?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
26 Aug 14 UTC
Well, I say it's unhelpful, because there is no fundamental difference between motions inside the brain and motions two feet in front of the brain.
Putin33 (111 D)
26 Aug 14 UTC
We're just repeating ourselves at this point.
Putin33 (111 D)
26 Aug 14 UTC
I also said movement, not motion. We could do without the equivocation.

I always associate Behaviorism with Classical conditioning, John B. Watson, and "Little Albert".
But that's just a broad brush stroke sort of thing, so my initial response is negative even though I tend ot make use of behaviorism quite a lot. The problem that I run into is behavioral extinction. The idea is to get someone to adopt a certain desired behavior. Behaviorism is cumbersome in a classroom setting with thirty kids expecting to be rewarded for doing stuff they should know to do anyway.
PiC (2166 D)
26 Aug 14 UTC
@Crazy A, Behaviorism is operant conditioning which is different from classical. Quick definition would be that operant conditioning essentially states that what we do (behaviors) are determined by rewards/penalties for doingthat behavior. Classical conditioning is basically training something (object, sound, ect) to elicit a certain behavior by presenting it which a stimuli that naturally elicits that behavior.
PiC (2166 D)
26 Aug 14 UTC
someone probably already said that but i didn't read all the other responses
Thanks PiC,

Yeah, I knew I was a bit off as far as the association was going. I only meant to give my impression rather than any serious opinion (that I'm unqualified to give anyway).
Putin33 (111 D)

"Behaviorism is cumbersome in a classroom setting with thirty kids expecting to be rewarded for doing stuff they should know to do anyway."

Behaviorism doesn't dictate that the reward always be the same or at the same time.

"The problem that I run into is behavioral extinction."

Yes, things escalate before they calm down. Extinction is difficult.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 14 UTC
I'm confused what the difference between movement and motion is?
Putin33 (111 D)
27 Aug 14 UTC
Surely there is a difference between external movement of say your hands or legs and brain waves?

How difficult are you trying to be here?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 14 UTC
I'm saying that in fact there is not a difference, if you are talking about "science" anyway. There's no reason one cannot be observed and the other can.

Fairly Cheap Website Hosting and Webdesign
€7,50/month, €90/year to host a site with up to 5 GB of space and monthly bandwidth, my help when needed, many 1-click installations, webmail accounts for your domain, excellent reliability and English support. Easy. Quite all-inclusive except domain registration. That’s £5,99/month or $9.93/month. International transactions cost a bit too. Prices change. You can make me a personal offer. Price for webdesign depends on workload but think 3 digits. More inside.

What would happen if...
What would happen if I convoy an army from Belgium to Holland using my fleet in the north sea as well as order my other fleet at Holland to move to Belgium, simultaneously?
Is this possible?

PS: I know it would be same as ordering F:Hol->North Sea, F:North Sea-> Bel, A:Bel->Hol; but just curious. ;)

Gunboat support moves
I'm in a no messaging anonymous player game where I was dislodged because one player supported another into my territory. How common is it that without messaging a player would know the exact move to make to assist another? Should I report this to the mods? It just seems suspicious as there theoretically shouldn't be a way for the two players to communicate....

Until recently, when you had posted in a thread, a star would appear next to the thread title on your screen, so that when you were scanning the forum, you'd quickly be able to see which threads you were involved in.

Now those little stars are gone. How come?
