Being a stand up ally!!!
I know diplomacy was originally designed as a game to win, but this site and the points and GR seemed to have changed the way you can look at the game.
How do people feel about being a good ally? For example, 5 player left in a game m and 3 are on one side while two are on the other. It's pretty much a stalemate unless one of the sides is willing to stab the other. Should one always stab, or is there something to be said about being a good ally to the end?

Now where have we seen that tried and failed ...... grow up India.
Ever considered the reason why there seems to be a problem is because people like drinking alcohol and that's why the ban won't work dickheads

American Empire Anomaly
Howdy folks,

I've noticed that all the Fall of the American Empire IV games are either extremely fast (5 minute rounds) or extremely slow (3 day rounds). Could anyone explain the apparent disinterest in 1-day-round games for this variant?

AEST live game 9am tomorrow morning?
Living in Australia, it's hard to get in to many live games. Would there be interest in a Sunday morning AEST live game tomorrow? (that's the east coast of Australia for those playing at home).

A guide to not being gullible
I am playing a game currently where a player is believing that his "ally" won't stab him even though his ally is well on their way to a solo and the gullible player is tied up fighting me. I am trying to organize against the solo threat but gullible prevails. Any tips for gullible players?

Are you a bit older? Don't have the oppressive need for instant gratification?
I'm looking to start a classic game with 3-5 day phases. I'm currently thinking about a 100+ point buy-in, but I can definitely bend on that. I only ask that you be able to explain any CDs on your record as either a live game or some sort of extenuating circumstance. Anyone interested?

Race riots. Ironic too that they're happening in St. Louis, one of the only cities that didn't have much violence back in the 60s. The police couldn't resist.

Convoying a Retreating unit
Suppose an English army unit is at Holland and is attacked by German unit from Kiel with support from Ruhr and Belgium. In normal case it is forced to disband because it doesn't have anywhere to retreat to.
But what if we allow the English fleet at north sea to convoy the retreating army unit to some place; say Edinburgh?
Is this feasible? If yes, then how will it affect the game overall?

Four CDs and a funeral
What's the right approach when a player refuses to draw?
Sherincall (338 D)
18 Aug 14 UTC
I was just in a game that had four people CD (I replaced the first one). Three of the four were direct neighbors to the winner. The last CD was after the stalemate lines were set, and the biggest power still refused a draw.

I won't list the game here, though it should be easy for anyone to find.. I'm wondering, is there any official or semi-official stance on this? Because, really, in a live game, I can just keep poking at stalemate lines until the other players get bored and go to bed.

Email the mods. If there is no play left on the board, they will talk to the players and see if the game needs to be drawn.
Sherincall (338 D)
18 Aug 14 UTC
Would have done so, except it was a 5min live game.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I'm a fan of a lot of sleazy moves to win, but simply waiting at a stalemate for someone to CD is very bad play, IMHO, because the only counter is for everyone else on the board to be as big of a loser as the person holding up the game.
Sherincall (338 D)

To be fair, it was only a couple of moves, but it was a stalemate, and we did tell him it was. I think I'm gonna write a script that keeps repeating orders, in order to outlast the other guy.

Or better yet, add that to the site's functionality, so this never happens again.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

A couple moves is a bit hard to tell if a stalemate has been reached. I used to wait at least 2 years to see of anything changed.
Sherincall (338 D)
18 Aug 14 UTC
Come on, it was a textbook stalemate, Germany/Austria border, StP/Moscow, Gibraltar, etc. If anything, there was a small chance of the dominant power losing the Med lines.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I didn't look at the game. I just said in the past I used to wait 2 years to see what would happen before I would intervene.

Probably a suggestion for the developer forum rather than here, but I would suggest adding an optional condition, that force-draws the game if 3 moves have passed in which there were no retreats and no territories changed colour.

Jamiet -

I admit this is a small percentage of potential situations, but what about a semi-stalemate that boils down to a guessing game. Sometimes the defender can guess right, but will eventually guess wrong and not be able to defend their territory. It might take more than 3 moves (heck, it could take 10 or more theoretically if they guess right for awhile) and the game would force-draw when in reality, it's not over. Or a situation where the aggressor is bringing up the last unit needed to break the line but it takes more than 3 moves for example.
Sherincall (338 D)
18 Aug 14 UTC
I feel like an option of "keep repeating these moves until I say so" will cover many important cases where the stalemate is obvious. I'll head over to the dev forum, see if a similar feature is planned. Maybe take a stab at it myself when I find the time.

Players being stubborn and others getting fed up is part of the game I think... In this case specifically it might be unfair, but otherwise being able to simply let the computer repeat your moves isn't really something you want... As I understand, in FtF and here, a big part of the game is influencing the others to get to the solo. Not wanting to draw is part of that strategy IMO.

Again, maybe in this specific case the guy was being a dick, but implementing this function would really make drawing a lot more common I think (and it already is very common!). If players don't have the 2 minutes patience of putting their order in for a few units, why play at all? If the goal of the game is to draw after one or two powers have been taken out, then it is sad... Maybe this reaction is because players are point driven instead of playing each game individually...

How would we ever get games like this one gameID=93086 with an easy stalemate repeater?

What a silly question. Unite the rest in opposition to his foolishness. Give him a single warning: draw now or die. If he refuses, don't give him a chance to change his mind - he must be punished.
Sherincall (338 D)
20 Aug 14 UTC
That may be possible if these are first turn CDs, but when someone is already at 10+ SCs, and another 10+ SC power CDs, there isn't much the others can do. It turns into a race of collecting the unguarded centers, but the stronger player has a much bigger advantage.

Alternatively, imagine a stalemate where one is at say 16, and 3 players of 6 SC have an alliance stopping him. Normally, he'd draw, but he can just keep trying until one of the others gives up. Only really dangerous in live games, but is a major dick move, and very hard to counter.

Anyone needs some webdesign?
I was going to do some webdesign for someone to earn some money in the holidays, but that project apparently got sort of cancelled and it's a bit late to apply for a holiday job now I think, so I'm offering my services again.. See first reply for what I can do. I copied it from the last time I advertised, in case anyone recognizes it.
