ethical question
would lying about whether a move is possible be outside the standards of what is and isn't okay with regard to diploming? say a person is concerned about another player making a move that is impossible, should I tell him it is, or benefit from his not knowing?

Despite loss of the Golden Game, the other games have seen / are seeing some pretty good action. Great to see such high level play.

And congrats to MKECharlie on the solo.

Thank you! It was a very satisfying game for me, with some good players I had never played with before. Also I got to try out the craziest Russian opening I had ever read about, and it worked out pretty nicely.

And, awesome opening Charlie. Really a phenomenal start as Russia to be able to do that and keep your southern border under control.

Don Turnbull popularized that opening in an article in Games & Puzzles. However, it should be noted that "at the time that Turnbull recommended this opening, the common opening move for F Kie was to Hol; it was unusual for Germany to move to Den. It was even more unusual for Germany to stand Russia out of Swe. Hence, Russian players expected to take Swe in Autumn 1901 as a matter of course. It was common for Russia to have 6 centres at the end of 1901, having taken Rum and Swe, and not unusual for Russia to be on 7, taking an Austrian centre as a result of Austria opening with a Balkan Gambit and allowing Russia into Gal in Spring 1901. So the move to Lvn with intent to convoy to Swe is not as strange as first appears."

Here's his full article on Russian Strategy: http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy/articles/turnbull-russian.htm

This particular opening he didn't name. It's known as "Northern System, Livonia Variant."

In my case, I had a friendly Germany, and an Austria and Turkey who seemed like they both wanted my help attacking the other, so it worked out.

It looks like it's very aggressive towards England, but if you read the article, Turnbull suggests that it's a way to attack Germany (even after taking Norway from England). I was open to going either way in this game, but England had a seemingly unbreakable alliance with France, so a weak Germany supported by me while I re-focused on the south suited me just fine.

France kept trying to get me to attack Germany (the entire. game. over. and. over.), but it never made sense to do so. I would have eventually to get the solo, but I never had to, since Italy lost faith and threw in the towel late in the game.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Oct 14 UTC
It would have been quicker if you had...

I'd rather not play with a player like Argento who spends the entire game ignoring the obvious solo power and throwing him the game because he's upset over Belgium.
Yonni (136 D(S))
09 Oct 14 UTC
Yeah, even in the last year, Germany and Italy could have at least made the ending interesting instead of just completely conceding the solo.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Also, my sincerest apologies to England - had I known that a top 100 game could be played so badly, I'd never have killed off my best ally.

Lol bo sox don't blame Germany because your diplomacy was so bad he refused to Listen to you. Nothing worse than a sore loser.

Impressive win Charlie congrats.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
09 Oct 14 UTC
bo_sox48: Argento (Germany, for those following along at home) didn't play badly, and never intended to throw the game to me. Italy threw the game when Germany said he was unwilling to stab me. The second-last turn, when Italy vacated a bunch of SCs for me, I had arranged for Germany to take over Edinburgh. If Italy hadn't given up hope that year, I would have followed through with giving Edinburgh to Germany, and moving toward a 17-17 position with Germany.

(I would have stabbed him later for the solo if I had the chance, of course, but there was never a reason to attack a Germany posing no threat to me, as opposed to an Italy who realized I was a solo threat and whose armies were in direct conflcit with mine.)
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
09 Oct 14 UTC
Lando: Thank you. I thought the same thing. Germany like me better than bo_sox48, which is why he continually allied with me and attacked France.

In full press games, things like stalemate lines don't matter as much as how people feel about the other players. Lando is the only gunboater I've played with who is also good at press games. You either get Aryeon (Turkey in this game), who doesn't talk enough, or bo_sox48, who talks plenty, but who insults people and thinks "that SC is on my side of the stalemate line" is a good argument for anything.

Meh. I don't think the others are going to post. I put this threadID in the global press of the game this morning, and so far, crickets.

Thanks for setting up the tourney. It's been a long time since I've played dip. I felt like I played well in my game, but I could definitely tell that I wasn't devoting as much time to sending messages as was needed to really lock it down. I feel like I could have done much better but I made a noob mistake and didn't put in conditional orders and *of course* misjudged the amount of time left in phase and had a critical NMR :( It was all downhill from there.

Anyway, good game and congrats to the winners. :)
I always read MKECharlie as: MmmmkayCharlie.

Thanks for playing to everyone! It's been great looking into the games, let's arrange to have some more tournies like this every once in a while.

I really enjoyed our game too Yonni, it was an interesting alliance but sometimes I was really afraid you could jump to the solo. Still think that if you moved one year earlies into NS you could have soloed. Also, I was really impressed how you convinced everybody around to suicide on me instead on you, really great diplomacy job.

And you are right, it´s R. D. Rivera and no I am not a Dr....
