variation supply centers are shared?
I read if 6 or 5 players are available a country (or more) should be eliminated, but is there a variation where instead eliminating countries supply centers are shared first by weaker or difficult countries?

For example, if only 6 players are available maybe turkey and Italy can share the supply centers of Austria. Something like that.

American claims 'kingdom' in remote Sudan

Somehow I imagine Krellin doing this.

How to play with Austria
So on the classic map I've gotten Austria a couple of times. Austria is by far the hardest country to play or win with. How exactly would someone do well with Austria?

I just realized...
Couldn't heart also be written as haert? It makes more sense. Or is haert pronounced more like Hay-Ert instead of Haughr-t

Silly English.....
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
10 Jul 14 UTC
If I saw haert I'd pronounce it hay-ert.

Heart could be hart, I suppose.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

Like when I see encyclopaeia or daemon I say "en-sigh-clo-pay-dee-uh" or "day-mon"
ILN (100 D)
10 Jul 14 UTC
Hmm, I say daemon day-mhen instead of day-mon(like [Mon]day)
As for encyclopedia, it's more en-sigh-clo-pee-dee-ah.

But then again your British.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
10 Jul 14 UTC
No I'm not. I was making fun of the British spellings. I say "en-sigh-clo-pee-dee-ah" and "de-min"
ILN (100 D)
10 Jul 14 UTC
o_O
De-min sounds completely off. Who are you making fun of now? :P
I think the old Anglo-Saxon word was haert, and probably pronounced Hay'-art.

I'd have to go to the OED, to check though.

Anglo-Saxon heorte.

Very sleepy, sorry. Just took five kids to Six Flags. No clue what this thread is about.
who cares as long as people understand what you're trying to say conventional spelling, syntax and grammar aren't necessary as you can see by this sentence which is not only a big run-on but also lacks any punctuation whatsoever but clearly gets my point across
OOPS there's a comma and apostrophes but does it really matter as long as you get what i'm saying?
ghug (5068 D(B))
10 Jul 14 UTC
Old English was heorte, pronounced logically. Heart dates back to the 15th-16th centuries, and they only changed one vowel because the Brits are silly about spelling.
onion vs. union is the one I find silly.

I'd spell them union = a nasty tasting vegetable
yoonion = the state of being unified.

So what would be a unified set be?
Who would have thought you would drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?
yoon / if / ide set
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Jul 14 UTC
I was asking what you would call a union if an onion were spelled union. The word already exists in English and refers to the joining of multiple items into a set.

http://www.plainlanguage.gov/examples/humor/marktwain.cfm

A humourus little letter, from Mark Twain on spelling.
Not to start a thread on why imperialism is bad for the whole world, but: if the English-speakers had not spread out as conquerors of the world, the English language (particularly its spelling, but also its phrasal verbs and silly mass crossings of its Germanic and Latinate predecessors) probably would have been relegated to its rightful place as a minor curiosity. Perhaps in a few centuries or millennia it will rank alongside Latin as a curiousity plaything of linguists and historians rather than as something that ordinary people have to trouble themselves with on a daily basis. This is, in my opinion, exactly the fate the English language deserves -- well, except for its wonderfully broad vocabulary. That is its primary virtue, I think, although it does throw up yet another wall for those attempting to break into English from the outside.

"(particularly its spelling, but also its phrasal verbs and silly mass crossings of its Germanic and Latinate predecessors)"

Nonsense. English is one of the few languages where you can actually tell what a word means from its spelling. Combining Latin & German is a recipe for a superior language.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Putin, how is English better at getting meaning from spelling than any language with a single parent language?
Putin33 (111 D)
12 Jul 14 UTC
(+2)
Because those languages have standardized, usually phonetic based, spelling conventions and didn't make a point to indicate etymology or meaning through spelling. The problem faced by English language developers is that the spoken English language had more sounds than the alphabet had letters (due to its wide-ranging heritage), so etymological based spellings became the norm.

mendax (321 D)

English is a complete mess, for sure, though I believe that USA-English is more standardised than the mother tongue over here.

English language "developers"? We are now in a clue-free zone.
ghug (5068 D(B))

When languages change phonetics but keep the same alphabet, the changes are almost always consistent across the entire language and easy to trace back.

"English language "developers"? We are now in a clue-free zone."

What would you call them, smart ass? The scribes who standardized the spelling system.
dirge (768 D(B))

Does the fact that English lacks the absurd verb conjugations of latin languages make it better? I would think so, but of course English as a quite few irregular verbs.

The lack of gender probably makes is easier to learn, also. Not sure what function gendering nouns has.
ghug (5068 D(B))
12 Jul 14 UTC
Verb conjugations are pretty common to most languages. English is definitely the outlier there. Asking whether that makes it "better" or "worse" is silly. What makes a language "better" than another? It makes it harder for English speakers to learn other languages, but the extreme irregularity of English verbs more that counteracts the reduced number of forms in terms of ease of learning.

Bigger/better chatbox via custom CSS, v0.1 alpha
Fellow WebDippers,

If you use Stylish (or userstyles in general) you can install this style that I just created to make the chatbox bigger and easier to read. It's alpha (read: feature incomplete) but if you install the Stylish browser extension you can get started with it.

Proactive and Reactive Countries
I've recently had something close to a breakthrough about how to approach play with different countries in Diplomacy. The short of it: The same play style *doesn't* work for every country, because some countries are designed for more proactive play, and others are designed for more reactive play.

If it looks like your ally will NMR
What is the general consensus on how to approach an ally NMRing, or at least there being less than five minutes to go, and no moves reported yet? Should you stab or alter moves from the original plan assuming he or she is gone and you should take what you can before other nations? Or do you feel it is more appropriate to stick with the original plan? Follow up question: does your position change if it is an anon game?

Insult and sarcasmnthread.
Three basic rules:
1. Don't do something that would get you clearly silenced or banned in another thread. There is no immunity to this thread.
2. You may only insult or be sarcastic to someone who has already posted in the thread.
3. No insult is serious. This is for fun, dammit.

Top 50 GR Game
I've just had a 2 month absence from playing on the site (which for me was a long time - even if I know people leave for much longer), and I would love to return to playing some high quality games.

This might be a bit ambitious, but I am hoping for a top 50 GR game (WTA July ratings). My rating is 31. Besides the GR rating, and a classic WTA, I really don't mind phase lengths, if it is non anon or semi anon, or the point buy in.

How bad is a beer and approximately a bottle of wine on one evening?
Judging by what others at the party talked about I thought it was reasonable (although a bit more than I was going for, I really liked the wine...), but yet others seem to think it's quite too much. There were people more drunk than me, but I won't base my drinking habits on what others do..
It was the first time I 'really' drank, probably worth mentioning.

First Game!
Hello all, I plan on joining my first game. I've mainly used the site to read the forums so now I need advice. Is it better to join a random pre-made game or should I request players from the forum so as to ensure it is a good game. If the latter, then if you are interested please post here. Ideally I would like to start the game next week. Anon, WTA, and a medium buy-in. Look forward to it!
