In FTF gunboat and by mail, a strategy exists where a Great Power can signal the intention for an alliance via writing an impossible order. For example, France wishes to signal England that an alliance is desired. France then orders A Mar support hold English F London. England gets the message and conducts himself/herself accordingly.

Yes, this is unfortunate. It would be nice if a player could choose between the current input method and a text input method.

Yes you cannot place orders that are impossible using this UI. Just makes it a little tougher to communicate, it's not backbreaking to the format.

If you want to play a game where you can tell one another exactly what you want "Hey, using our well-known code language -- impossible Move A means I want an alliance -- then just play a press game."
Yet another reason why gunboat is less-than-Diplomacy. It a game in which you ability to know some "hidden message" in people's moves is just a simple form of press with a small language set, with press delayed by a turn from the messaging. and essentialyl gunboat gives an "unfair advantage" if you want to look at it this way to inexperienced gunboat players that don't know the "language" of gunboat.

@krellin, sure, you would never have a bunch of new players play gunboat, they would play Diplomacy. That just means gunboat is less accessible as a game to excel at than full press is. I claim that most people could get pretty good at full press with some experience and a devotion to the press in your games, while with gunboat a lot of people will never be able to excel because they can't wrap their head around it fully.

@y2k - I'm trying to wrap my head around what you just said...lol I (believe it or not...) thrive on endless blather. I find gunboat to be painful...
