I'm not so sure Indonesia is a good example of a state 'well on the way' to liberal democracy. The secularity of Turkey has, until recently, been ensured largely by the armed forces so it doesn't really fit either.

Senegal I know very little about so it may well be a good example.

Tolstoy: I see that your original question was directed at only three forum users, but I, as a progressive, secularist Westerner, was hesitant to pass judgment on the recent coup. I wasn't about to condemn Egyptian secularists for supporting the coup (since I might have done the same were I Egyptian), but I also wasn't at all predicting that everything would turn out well. Clearly, if Egyptian history of the last several decades tells us anything it is that the ruling, secular, 'socialist' elite is not progressive at all. The hesitation for me lied on whether the Egyptian military was just a bastion of the old authoritarian, elitist regimes or whether the military was truly finding a voice in progressive socialism. It appears that the former is proving true.
