Announcing the 2018 GvI and FvA Showdowns

#1 Post by captainmeme » Tue Jan 02, 2018 11:37 pm

Welcome back to the biggest 1v1 Dip tournaments on the web!

SIGNUPS ARE NOW CLOSED.

Last year, the Inaugural 1v1 Showdown broke a longstanding record to become the largest tournament ever run on webDiplomacy, with over 100 players competing and over 500 games played before xorxes took the gold and the 1500 :points: prize that went with it.

This year, we're bringing it back and making it better. Last year we only ran a France vs Austria tournament - this year we're running both a France vs Austria and a Germany vs Italy Showdown, and you do well in both, you could win up to 6000 :points: !

The Details

Each round, you will play one set against your designated opponent. A set consists of two games, one as one country and one as the other, along with a third tiebreaker game if necessary. The tiebreaker will have random country assignments, and if that game draws, it will be counted as a win for the player who drew the statistically worse country (France in FvA, Italy in GvI).

The tournament is Double Elimination - this means if you lose your set, you're not out! You have to be defeated in two sets to be eliminated from the tournament.

That's pretty much it for the basics - you can find a more in-depth explanation of the rules on the tournament page. This tournament is open to all, so feel free to join regardless of how experienced you are with the variants!

The signup form is linked at the very top of this post.

New Prizes!

The Prize Pool for each tournament is the same as the prize pool for last year's tournament:

1st: 1500 points
2nd: 600 points
3rd/4th: 300 points
5th-8th: 100 points
9th-16th: 50 points

However, there's a bonus if you participate and do well in both the GvI and FvA Showdowns - if you comes 16th or above in both tournaments, your total winnings will be doubled.

This means that if you place 16th in FvA and 1st in GvI, you will win (1500+50) * 2 = 3100 points. If you come first place in both tournaments, you'll hit the jackpot of (1500+1500)*2=6000 points. There's a huge amount to play for here!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'm aiming to start the tournament in two weeks time, on the 15th of January.

Oh, I forgot to mention - seedings this year are based on your most recently available 1v1 Elo if you've played 5 or more 1v1 games. If you have played fewer than five, you will be seeded at the base value of 1v1 Elo (100) with the tiebreaker being your most recently available Overall Ghost Rating.

As a member of slow movers anonymous I have to ask how much time is allowed to play each game?

Game phases are 1 day per phase - readying is encouraged, but not required. Every player also has one week total pause time to use whenever they wish - further pauses may be granted but need to be approved by the GM. There's no hard limit on when the games need to end but I'll step in if a game is clearly stalemated.

If you've not been readying it's likely you'll fall behind in the bracket - if you fall back too far I might start pestering you to hurry up :D

Pretty sure (1500+1500)*2=6000 points.

Good point - as there isn't a 1v1 rating system on playdip, I'm going to rank your 1v1 Elo at the base value (100) but the tiebreaker will be your position in the playdip 'All Games' ranking, and if that's tied then I'll seed the playdip player higher. So a player who is ranked #30 in playdip would be seeded below a player who is #29 in GR but above a player who is #30 in GR.

How long is the tournament expected to last in real time (months)?

edit: Found my answer
"The webDiplomacy Inaugural 1v1 Showdown began in January 2017, and ended 11 months later on November 5th."

I actually expected it to take 3 or 4 months the first time around, and for the most part, it did.

The real problem with this format is that 2 sets have to finish before 1 set in the next round can start. That's fine, but it means if 1 set goes slowly, it forces one player in the next round to wait until it's finished to start their next game - and that forces one player in the next round to wait, and the round after that, and the round after that, etc.

Last time around 90% of the participants had finished all their games by the 4 month mark. After that it was a case of waiting for the slow sets to catch up - so even if it does last 11 months again, you shouldn't be expecting to be playing all of the time. You'll (probably) have a fair amount of 1v1s in the first couple of months, and then they'll become less frequent as the tournament gets to the last few rounds.

I’m only signing up because I just checked my Elo and it’s shamefully low.

We currently have 63 players signed up for the FvA Showdown and 59 for the GvI Showdown. Not as large as last year, but signups are up for another 9 days!
