The Democrats Have Big Problems

#1 Post by Matticus13 » Thu Nov 12, 2020 8:31 pm

As far as I can tell, the Democrats will have little to celebrate when the dust finally settles on the 2020 election. They have defeated the Orange Bad Man, but their slimmer than expected victory (many swing states were within 1%) did not translate into a *Blue Wave*. Sure, you get to have a substantial impact on domestic and foreign policy for the next four years. Definitely a win. Executive order superpowers are awesome. The rest looks pretty bleak...

The Senate will likely remain in Republican hands. I don't see a scenario where the Democrats win both run offs in Georgia. Without a majority, passing meaningful, progressive legislation is DOA for the next two years (probably all 4 of a Biden first term).

The Democrat majority in the House will be slim. I cannot predict the future, but if recent history is any indication, they will get hammered in the midterm election (as is tradition in the States).

As bad as Democrats did in down ballot US Congressional races, they arguably did worse in state legislatures. The Texas House was thought to be in play: they likely gained ZERO seats. They flipped ZERO state legislative bodies. They actually lost New Hampshire... Republicans will again dominate the redistricting process.

SCOTUS will not be friendly to progressive causes for at least a decade (likely much longer).

While beating an incumbent President is usually an impressive feat, I'd frankly be embarrassed by how tight the race was considering the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the election. Without COVID, Donald Trump wins another term, IMO. *If* (a big if) the Republicans manage to put a compelling candidate forward in '24, (say Senator Tim Scott) Democrats are royally f***ed if they keep their current heading.

Despite claims of racism, higher percentages of Black and Latino voters (especially men), voted Republican/Trump.

I have lots of thoughts/opinions on what's happening and how it can be fixed, but what say you fellow webDippers?

Seems a solid assessment, and that's without factoring in the tensions between different wings of the party, and having to navigate the economic fallout from Covid-19. Then you have some fun foreign policy challenges from China to Macron's one man stand against the Islamists, and the inevitable unexpected spanner in the works.

Given the choice of a job swap with Joe Biden or the local sewage engineer, I'd opt for wee Jock McPlop any day of the week.

If you want a democracy then this is a satisfying outcome. I dont think American workers want to go as socialist as AOC liberals want to go. And they definetely want out of Trumps version of America too

"You can fool some of the people all the time"

The economy was being propped up by the Fed keeping interest rates low and massive government spending to bail out the farms and businesses that Trump were wrecking with his trade policies and tariffs.

Do you have turnout by demographic group? I'd love to look at those numbers!

So, while the Democrats may be the more *mainstream* party, there are significant policy stances that keep independent voters from consistently voting blue. Anyone want to take a crack at unraveling the mystery?

What mystery? Why the Democrats insist on supporting policies that immunises them from millions of potential votes, or why those policies are so toxic to certain independent voters in the first place?

USA has Big Problems

#11 Post by peterlund » Mon Nov 16, 2020 10:18 pm

Wrong title! The correct one would be "USA has Big Problems".

The whole country is in total chaos and mismanaged probably due to that too many are too ignorant and uneducated. And then there just happen to be a pandemic going on at the same time killing even more than the gun violence already does.

Mo' money, mo' problems. Y'all *from abroad* liberals just jealous ;)

Trolling aside, since you don't live here (assuming you are from Sverige), I wouldn't expect you to understand our backwoods, Western, white trash lifestyle choices. Are you really alive if you aren't terrified of being gunned down by a Boogaloo member at any given moment?

Let me answer for you: No.

Are you really arguing for the existence of election fraud?

If you are doing that, you are intentionally draging the US democratic reputation down to the level of a banana republic.

How hard can it be to conduct a proper democratic election? Have really not USA figured this out during the 244 years of independence?
