you can buy more storage space pretty dirt cheap on just about any web hosting service. its like 400 bucks a year for 1 billion forum posts worth of data on some providers.
I don't see a donor star of whatever color in the profile of the poster.
So what, you smug fuck?

With the new forum, does the main complaint really just come down to not seeing some topics on the front page?

i.e. could the issues be solved by making what is shown on the front page configurable in some way? Perhaps something like Google has with "Safe Search"...the Politics filtering is on by default but you can turn it off in your profile?

Not asking anyone to do any work of course, just trying to better nail down the actual issue rather than just reminiscing about how the grass was greener in the past.

I think his valid point is that arguing for Zultar to pay another $400 a year out of his own pocket is asking a bit much.

Everyone knows that Zultar made millions of dollars out of that Plura scam a few years ago.

A prime example of a forum regular being an asshole against a forum newcomer for no reason. Octavius comment was appropriate and enough. Jam - are you expecting you forum bro's to come pat your back? Because that's what the old forum was all about.

the implication that you should keep your mouth shut unless you are a donator is kinda bullshit.

but I understand why ppl donate. and I would not voice criticism against being a donor to this community. I have pondered it before.

Its hard to express my opinion without sounding like some ass who just misses the nostalgia that was webdip 2012-2016. I dont really play dip or gunboat anymore. I played 500 games on this site.
I was a forum troll who came after all the really infamous people got banned. I posted joke threads every day. I was very satirical and tended to annoy the mods by my spam.
I watched political battles go down where mods closed threads and had to police bad vitriol. I watched people get banned for sexist remarks and hateful statements. We were living in a community with strong opinions. We had 1 woman who was fighting back against what she perceived was an ocean of misogyny. We had 1 diehard republican from kansas convinced school of war had a liberal agenda. We had daily threads implying democrats supported slavery and eugenics.

This forum was lively, it was totally nothing to do with the game of dip at all.

And it was this place, that was on the edge of the internet, wild, fun, unpredictable and it was our goddamn home.

You are right. But this is also your deliberate misinterpretation. He only pointed out that making a rethorical point about server space being cheap yet refusing to contribute is also bullshit.

Let me express some condolences in that a place that meant something for you is gone.

I joined this place in 2013 and I left this place in 2013. I left because of the forum. I don't think I posted a single message back then - but I was still forced to read the bullshit everytime I logged in. I'm happy it's gone.

Anyway. If this thread is about you old timers remembering, the let me not disturb anymore.

And the war against how the old site was is usually a three pronged defense.

■old forum wasnt sustainable
■old forum was a nuisance to users who didnt wanna read it
■old forum was extra work for mods who had to close threats, warn users and ban people for forum conduct

Those seem like the main arguments against the old ways.
Heres what I think should have happened to preserve the culture and enjoyment.

1. Add a new forum and allow images and imbeddable youtube videos like 99.9999999999999% of all other active forums in every known corner of the internet.

2. Invest in forum content add more categories, including sports, writing, film

3. add more emojis, add more fonts and give users avatars

4. get rid of hidden forum areas and bring everything back into the light

5. allow award winners to have tokens on their forum profile showing theyve won an award before. Give awards to tourney winners.

6. host yearly awards like they used to for most improved gr, best gunboater, best full press player, mvp, best mod, best forum game, best debater.

7. allow alt accounts that cannot join games and auto link to your existing account using current tech that is used to track and unearth multis

and for #7 youd literally never have to worry about multi gaming again because you could simply click a button and make them.unable to join any games.

I guess it somewhat depends what time of community we want here - a community which mainly plays dip but has an attached forum...or a web forum where people occasionally play dip too.

No it doesn't. That's just how people like to frame the argument when they want to limit the forum.

The problem diplomacy has is that many diplomacy players have something of a love / hate relationship with it.

Typically someone will find the game, play it a couple of times, and discover they love it. Then they join a lot of games and play it obsessively for a while, and get quite good at it. Then they realise quite how much time it's eating up, and because the games last a couple of months they can't escape, and they start to resent the damned thing. They play their games reluctantly, or simply CD, they leave, and they don't come back.

The forum was many things. It was a way to let off steam. It was a way to practice persuading others. It was a way to get to know the people who play this game and discover that they're quite as mad as you are. But perhaps the most important thing for the site is that the forum provided reasons to stick around when you were sick to death of the goddamned game until you were ready to start playing again.

Without the forum I would have lasted a year or two, max. With it, I stuck around long enough to learn how play at a rate that suited me.

1) We've hosted SoW since the new forum.
2) We don't have SoW because the mod team is very busy, we can't find TAs and we can't find profs. It has nothing to do with the forum. That's like saying Trump was elected because the Cold War happened.

With regard to point 2, I respectfully disagree. The old forum was very good in terms of providing a place for proactive and talkative site members to congregate. It would be, I suspect, far easier to find TAs and Profs in such an environment. The current site provides a good place to play diplomacy, but very little else. People come, they play diplomacy, and they go. To have volunteers for initiatives like the SoW you need a community, and that is what the site has abandoned.
