Best first trak on an album of all time

#1 Post by Smokey Gem » Fri Nov 08, 2019 3:10 am

Hi Folks,

One nomination each. Then we discuss and eliminate our way down to the most favoured.

My nomination is Pink Flloyd. " Shine on you Crazy Diamond part one "

So many possibilities, but for body of work I'm going with:
Van Halen - Runnin' With the Devil

I'm going to have to go with the 1812 Overture, that's got to have been the first track on an album at some point. It's also the best.

Sympathy for the Devil
The Rolling Stones from their Beggars Banquet Album

Also if you count Track One on B Sides:

Fortunate Son
CCR on "Willy and the Poor Boys" Album

“So What” - Miles Davis in “Kind of Blue”

It set the tone of the album so perfectly

It's got to be 'Back in the U.S.S.R.' by the Beatles on the White Album

Hmmm.

Power of Equality off Blood Sugar Sex Magik by RHCP. It isn't a super well-known track, but it sets the groove for one of the best albums of the era.

I've gotta throw Hells Bells by AC/DC into the mix, but ultimately I agree with the Pink Floyd suggestion.

There are so many fantastic first tracks of fantastic albums
But Robert Wyatt's Sea Song on Rock Bottom is... different from anything else, and perfect

Bombtrack by RATM is definitely up there for me. First album, first song... They have better songs, but this one has special place in my heart.

What's this??? No Kylie Minogue tracks nominated yet?

One interesting bit of trivia regarding the 1812 by Tchaikovsky is that at it's first public performance the enthusiastic chaps firing the cannons managed to inflict substantial damage to nearby buildings including, I think, a cathedral of some importance.
