American Whiskey

#1 Post by Jamiet99uk » Mon Nov 04, 2019 10:38 pm

I have begun occasionally frequenting a pub in London which has a very large selection of American whiskey (i.e. bourbon).

I like bourbon but am not used to this much choice. They have somewhere around about 140 varieties. My normal choice is Maker's Mark, but I'm normally lucky if the choice extends beyond Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey, and something like Knob Creek. I know enough to know I like Maker's Mark, that I also like Wild Turkey 101, and that Jack and Jim are nothing special.

Any recommendations to try, now I have access to this house of plenty?

My favourite bourbon has to be McVitie’s, although I'll accept a Waitrose if nothing else is available.

Michters , EH Taylor, anything from the BTAC collection if you want to splurge. Heavens Door, 4 Roses , Angels Envy Rye in an old fashion is amazing

Look for single barrel stuff , not small batch.

Knob Creek was said by a family member who ran a fancy restaurant here to be the best bang for buck. This isn't to say it's cheap, but holds it's own and won't break the bank.

Ssorenn's list is great if you're up for spending more.

The best (objectively) bourbon is Bulleit.

Uh - in matters of taste there is no objectivity...

Michters makes 4-5 products around $40-$45. The 10year is $120-$160
EH Taylor has products around the same
Angels Envy Rye $75-80
BTAC $150 retail but super hard to find. $400-$1000 on second hand market
Heavens door $50-$80
Four Roses $40-$100

This is funny because, you see, British people take biscuits very seriously.

A tad harsh, ssorenn. American whiskey ain't the best but I wouldn't describe it as laughable. I've heard it makes a very passable drain cleaner.

Oh dear me, no. We call our stuff whisky, old chap. Whiskey is the slightly different name given to cheap foreign knock-offs, much like in Hong Kong where a search of the flea market will find a dazzling array of abidas sneakers and Praada handbags 8-)

For a special occasion, Elmer T Lee Single barrel sour is delicious, but it's definitely more expensive and can be hard to find.

You Brits and canucks and Irish. Semantics about Whiskey/Whisky. Kentucky bottled in bond bourbon/Rye is where it’s at. The rest is crap.
