Do you guys think it’s wrong to say the N word if you don’t mean it in an offensive manner?

@minombreesgeoff, My response was sarcastic. I meant, It should be universally accepted, never to use the n word. Whether jokingly or to make "music", which in my opinion is more- performance art, done badly.

I'm a free-speech zealot, but since you're asking if you should *say it* rather than whether it should be *allowed*, the answer is definitely "don't say it."

Rappers, of course, throw that word around constantly. For whatever reason, almost nobody cares that they do. As a white dude, it doesn't affect me one way or another, and nobody it does affect is asking for my opinion, so I generally don't worry about it.

But... since *you're* asking... my vote is "nope". The word is intrinsically hostile.

I had a few (black)buddies who called each other the "n" word frequently, it was all joking and fun, but all the same I(as a white guy) would never call one of them that.

So my vote is no, unless your black

The trouble with the word nigger is that it not only carries its historical offense but is now also an instrument of great division between white and black people in the US, and to a lesser extent elsewhere. Every time the word is used, regardless of intent, it creates a distance between those of different races in the group. By saying that blacks can say it but no one else can you create, whether intentionally or not, an us and them atmosphere which does nothing for integration, does nothing for building understanding and tolerance.

So no, it is not ok to call someone else a nigger, regardless of the colour of your skin.

White man coins word for black slaves in America.

African-American culture adopts the word.

In name of equality, White man either berates African Americans for usage of word or declares he has freedom to use word without condemnation.

White man doesn't understand why African Americans disregard this privileged position of dictating cultural norms in pursuit of equality.

You spoke calling on all cultures to unilaterally denounce the use of a word because it is divisive. I spoke defending a culture's choice to hold onto it. I'm OK with that.

African American culture would likely drop the use of the word when White people in America collectively get their heads out of their asses when it comes to race and privilege but we're moving in the wrong direction on that one unfortunately.

Morons. The n word was used as far back as the 1800's by the British referring to all dark peoples of their empire (i.e. especially India). Talk about cultural misappropriation. But because some of you want to make a case for/against privilege and division. By all means don't let common sense and facts cloud your own views of bigotry, racism and segregation.

Is there an argument in there somewhere?

I meant why does he think there is a direct causal relationship between the behavior of White people and usage of the word in the African American community.
