A lot depends on where you are in Europe, I guess. It's also worth keeping in mind that Europe already has various walls to keep out immigrants, the recent Italian election was a competition to see which party would promise to send more people back, and the East have good look at multiculturalism when working in Western European nations and seem to have decided they don't like it.

A left-leaning libertarian centrist, huh? Sounds about right.

Apparently these numbers define the whole of me. Very well. There were some odd questions, to be sure, and I think the limit to 4 options is a little too simplistic, but I suppose it's good to see how I line up. None of the options were very close to me, so I guess I'm neither good nor bad.

Economic Left/Right: 3.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.36

I'm not a huge fan of this test and I don't think it's very well constructed.

Some of the questions seem quite loaded one way or the other.

The very first one, for example:

> "If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations."

What kind of halfway normal person is going to "STRONGLY DISAGREE" with that statement? Are there really many people who take the view that the interests of private businesses should *strongly* outweigh the interests of _humanity_, really?

I mean seriously who holds the honest opinion "as a human, I think the interests of the Coca Cola Corporation are much more important than the interests of humanity"....? Who?

Well, since everyone else is doing it, I filled out the Political Compass again for the sake of it. I also responded "Strongly Disagree" to the first question just to spite Jamiet.

Economic Left/Right: 4.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 3.33

I've answer the compass too many times. And don't feel up to it again.

The 8 value one seemed fun though.

That's the problem with the wording of the thing. But the secondary concern is: 'what are the interests of humanity'? Who defines what they are? How do we serve those interests? Are the answers political (policy)? Personal? The problems with questions like those ruin the test. I have no idea where I'd stand if the questions weren't so poorly worded. Perhaps more left, perhaps more right. Whatever the case, the test hasn't understood its own problems and biases.

Has anyone ever been surprised by their results? There are times when I think the test could be carried out just as effectively with a single question asking how much you agree with the idea that you're a Socialist

That's an interesting question, Octavious. But 'socialist' means so many different things, not only to different people, but even among adherents to 'socialism'. The same goes for libertarianism, as left/right hemispheres of the ideal believe - if not practice - very different things depending on the issue at hand.

Libertarian only means you live in a country where the word "liberal" has had a bad press :p

Socialism does mean different things to different people, but the advantage of the one question quiz is that it gives you an answer aligned with the user's definition of Socialism rather than whatever the definition of Socialism the quiz makers use.

Well, I guess I'm not familiar with that quiz, but theoretically it is the same as 'libertarianism' or any other typical 'ism' that people gather behind or deride as ideologically fraught.

So I asked Her Imperiousness, the Fire Breathing MemSahib where on the political spectrum she would place me & her response was "In the dunces' corner." Then she lovingly berated me for wasting her time and commanded me to go forth and prune the roses. What a wonderful woman.
