Trump calls for "pathway to citizenship" in exchange for a wall.

Absolute betrayal of campaign promises. Trump said that he would "immediately terminate" DACA if elected, and now he's going to give them (and potentially even all illegals) fucking amnesty. He really will become the liar in chief if this deal goes through. Those who come to the US illegally deserve no amnesty.

I mean is it technically a lie when he didn’t comment about whether or not he’d support something like this if it came out of Congress? ;)

Fuck that. Following the word but not the spirit of what he promised is politician-level shit, and part of his appeal was being an "outsider", not a politician. And in any case, I'm pretty sure at this point that his "big heart" would tell him to reinstate DACA if Congress doesn't get the legislation passed.

I'd say it depends a lot on what Trump's pathway to citizenship looks like. In terms of immigration, how are things looking? Has illegal immigration fallen under Trump? Is legal immigration at a suitable level?

Illegal immigration fell off immediately following Trump's election and inauguration, but it's risen back up to Obama-era levels as potential illegals figured out that Trump wasn't going to actually do anything. Where is the deportation force? Anyhow, legal immigration quotas haven't changed either.

You're going to have to improve punctuation so I can understand what you're trying to say.

That would ruin the mystery.

o fug D:

I will wait and see, but that's pretty bad.
If it's just DACA recipients (1.8M people) and not all illegal immigrants receiving amnesty, then that's worse than I would like, but acceptable. The problem still gets solved if a wall goes up and deportations still happen.
If everyone gets to stay then that's a bad deal folks, a yuge bad deal.

Poor bureaucracy is the main cause of illegal immigration boom checkmate

I disagree. Outside of the far-right, the criticism of DACA has been almost entirely that it wasn’t passed by Congress. It goes to the heart of saying he wants to go against presidential overreach (even if I disagree with the idea that he’s been consistent on that), and getting Congress to pass a fix for it is the reason he set the end date 6 months after he signed the EO.

I will say this about some of the things Trump has done, his use of brinksmanship to force Republicans to enact legislation (or not) that deals with Obama's executive orders put in place due to the absence of GOP congressional leadership is both interesting and wrenching.

frankly there are some real positives to this.

1. the economy doesn't undergo a shock from having a massive labor force removed from it (although with minimum wage laws now in full application, this could be significant... anyone have any studies trying to predict how this would affect us? I only have intuition, and there's good and bad for wages and prices)

2. we can help control crime/drugs from crossing the border (in either direction)

step two is ACTUAL long term immigration reform. if we allow states more individual control on healthcare as well, and actually restructure some of the more expensive social programs, it won't bankrupt us either to allow more people in. in fact, if done properly, it could help tax yields.

Quite frankly, the arguments for keeping illegal immigrants are the exact same ones Democrats made for keeping slavery in place back in the day. Slaves were also a supposedly indisposable “massive labor force”, but we got by just fine without them. We should not be tolerating the massive violation of human rights and human dignity that is illegal immigrant labor, especially farm labor, just because it might increase the GDP. It’s an abomination.
