Latest in ways students are being protected against a school shooting. At least they didn't waste much money with this idea.

All School staff should be required to carry a gun and pass gun safety training.

Why?
Their job is to teach. They are not a security force.

Do you support a significant pay rise for teachers in respect of this considerable increase in their responsibilities, which you are proposing?

A teacher's job, in fact, has always carried with it a duty of care for their students.

There are, of course, a high number of teachers in the US that are already competent in the use of a firearm. Allowing these teachers to be armed at school, with indeed a pay bonus, may well make a real difference in school safety. Certainly it's not an idea to dismiss out of hand.

As for the idea of arming all teachers, I recall some of mine that you'd think twice before trusting them with a staple gun, let alone an actual weapon. I reckon arming more than a handful per school is a bit of none starter.

Yeah, making it a requirement to be a teacher changes the tune of it a bit. That's just an extra layer of red tape that could prevent otherwise-qualified teachers from being able to teach.

Some good points here. Maybe making it mandatory is too far, but at the very least if we had a law that allowed for it just that would cut down on school shootings. Every potential shooter would know that schools are no longer soft targets. Every school would be a hard target and plenty of teachers would be carrying concealed which would greatly increase safety.

Maybe allow for time paid to complete the concealed training program and to purchase the gun. I think that is fine @Jamie

What about armed security guards?

My high school had an armed police officer, but he was mostly there to keep students from skipping class.

Most schools ibly have one armed guard. Maybe if they had like a squad or two.

The recent shooting in the California bar had 6 trained off duty police officers inside and it still had a high death toll. Spreading them out over a larger area and they will be ineffective unless they are lucky enough to be behind the shooter when the weapon is first drawn out.

Besides schools and the local governments are already balking at paying for better security. The Nixon administration considered how to prevent a 9/11 hijacking and realized that the airlines wouldn't agree to the higher costs to prevent it.

Speaking as an educator now. An average High School can have anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 students. An average Middle School can be around 1,000-1,500 students. Most schools have at least one officer stationed to them or security guard depending on the state. So, you can see, how trouble can arise from this.

Really they should just do a national right to carry law and incentive staff to train and pass a program to arm themselves. When every school becomes a fortress you will see a lot less of these nutter shooters. Plus, our Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms for all citizens.

god damn i hope ND isn't actually in charge of educating anybody.

also, making schools more similar to prisons doesn't stop shooters. the threat of cops does not stop shooters. it never has. adding more guns into the situation simply increases thelikelihood that someone gets shot on accident

ND must have missed all the news about armed people that leave their weapons behind in restrooms. Below are just the incidents from TSA security that are protecting airlines. I posted earlier about the ones that work at schools back after the Parkland shooting. I suppose if you google it you can find some of the incidents where people find these sort of weapons lying around and then fire them. Trump used to tweet about the immigrant that found a gun like that and killed a person when it went off.

Yes, I started my career in public education. I currently still teach students in a public education setting, but also have moved into higher education where I teach as well. So, I educate students at both levels each week. And, I promise I have more higher level degrees then anyone in this thread probably combined.

@Randomizer, ah we are talking about school safety not TSA and airport security. Two different things.

School safety doesn't improve if the people doing it don't secure their weapons. I didn't feel like hunting for the link to all the armed school safety people and teachers caught leaving their weapons behind in restrooms and other places so they both didn't have them and provided a loaded weapon to strangers that found them. This was weeks after Parkland when Trump was calling for arming teachers.

I used TSA as an example because these are people with a higher level of training than you would see in schools and even they were making stupid mistakes.

Have you seen the people that work at TSA? Oh my god. I think a strict and very stringent safety program for teachers and staff to get a concealed firearm permit would be fine. not mandatory.

Looks like we are at the same level Jamie. I'm still better though.
