I knew people working both sides of the OK-5 race, and Horn winning is a shock to everybody even in the district.

The weird part being that for only the 10th time in state history have we elected a governor from the same party as the sitting president and Republicans have flipped Democratic state House seats to now officially control 75% of seats in both chambers.

Well, that was dull. The political equivalent of a nil-nil draw.

Losing multiple seats in the senate is a big blow for democrats. With 6 year terms, it’s harder to flip control of the senate since few seats are up each midterm election - the house is much easier.

Winning back the house was good for Democrats in the short term because it gives a check on trump - but long term republicans have to be happy with locking down the senate.

My understanding is that this particular crop of senators was skewed in the sense that Democrat opportunities were limited, and that other Senate elections will favour them more. Although regardless of that it must be disappointing for them to finish the campaign worse off.

Am I right in saying that Trump has done rather better than Obama did in the other house? A defeat, but a relatively modest one?

All in all, nothing for anyone to get excited about. I wonder how many of the party faithful who are shouting about what a glorious result it was actually mean it?

In other political news, President Macron of France is experimenting with ever more inventive ways to destroy what remains of his popularity. This week he'll be paying his respects to the memory of arch traitor and Nazi collaborator, Philippe Pétain, who helped Hitler slaughter countless numbers of his fellow Frenchmen.

Nice to know that, as bad as things may look at home, it could be worse :)

Ehh, I do genuinely think both parties have something to cheer about. Republicans expanding their majority in the Senate means they don’t have to worry about relying on Pence to force something through, and the Democrats havoc control of either chamber means that ignoring them and their interests entirely is impossible if anyone wants to pass anything.

yeah, republicans got a couple of key upsets to retain control in the senate (coincidentally against blue dog democrats, the worst kind of democrat), but got rocked in the house.

p mixed bag tonight, but that's about what was projected from the polls and the analysts overall.

I personally helped canvass for labor unions in Nevada and it was really fun to see the democrats there start polling better and eventually pull off an upset victory in both the gubernatorial and the senate race there.

It'd be nice if the site was awash with anything...
