If I have my numbers right, that's 86 players for FvA and 80 for GvI. I'll be closing signups later today and sending out confirmation PMs/Emails/Discord Messages/Smoke Signals :)

Confirmation PMs have been sent out! If you haven't received one and think you should, message me ASAP.

Tournament Brackets, complete with matchups, can be found here:

FvA Showdown
GvI Showdown

I've set up the brackets so that we can get games between confirmed players underway asap. This also means that we may have some players who've changed their mind on playing or have left the site in the Bracket - if a player drops out of the tournament or doesn't confirm, I'll just set that Set as forfeited to the opponent.

Additionally - something new this year - up until the first set has concluded, you can add a prediction of the Winners Bracket result through Challonge! There's absolutely no prize for guessing correctly, I just thought it would be interesting to see how similar the final result ends up being to the predictions.

Is there a partuclar manner in which we should be setting up matchups, to make sure we get one of each power and the time settings are correct, etc.?

I'll make it very clear what you have to do via PM (or email or playDip PM or whatever you chose) when setting up the matches.

When a set is ready to begin, I will PM one of the players asking them to set up the 2 games and providing all the details they need to fill out on the new games page. Once that's done, I'll PM the game links and passwords to the other player.

WebDip doesn't have any way to choose which power you play, so if you draw the same country twice, don't enter orders. I'll pause the games and switch the countries around, and then you can vote unpause to start.

It may be a bit late to make this suggestion, but here goes:

I suggest we make the GvI Tournament games constrained by having a neutral Tyr on the first phase (Spring 01 only). As I looked through the history of GvI games, this variant appeared to produce much more balanced games.

Without this variant, it seems Italy wins very rarely unless Germany plays poorly (a significant skill variation is required for Italy to win).

What do others think?

Hmm, could be interesting. I can kind of see pros and cons for both sides for Tyr being neutral in spring 1901...

I have seen the Ty-N variant discussed a fair bit prior to this, but for this first tournament, I'm going to just run it as standard GvI. I want to see a bit more play at the very highest level before making any changes - bear in mind that it wasn't until a strong tournament scene emerged that FvA was shown to be fairly well balanced at a high level, and there were a lot of suggestions made prior to that which would have given France a significant advantage.

If Germany wins a vast majority of the high level matches in this tournament, I'll change it to Ty-N for the next one.

Update: Just waiting on a few confirmations now. I'll send out another PM/Email to the players who haven't confirmed yet tomorrow, and I'll set up all the sets where both players have confirmed at the same time.

Another update:

Missing confirmations from the following players, if I don't receive them within 24h I will remove them from the tournament:

Pjmansfield99
TSmith2003
yjt0801
Ricardoprosim
Sage
Trentpool
rockNroll87q

Feel free to update your predictions accordingly (although I think pjmansfield will confirm, it may just have been that he requested his PMs via the forum and you don't get obvious notifications there).

Game setup will begin tomorrow because it's very late here now!

Sure! Also, if anyone else wants to join, there'll likely be 4-5 spaces open if you PM me within the next 24 hours (I'll let you know who you're replacing after those 24 hours).

@Wusti - Do you want to play in FvA Showdown, GvI Showdown, or both?

Pref FvA - I haven't played GvI before - can do both though if you need some cannon fodder/numbers :D

An update!

All players who did not confirm have been removed from both tournaments. You can find them marked on Challonge as 'No Player (Dropped)'. If you're matched up against one of these players, you will automatically win the set.

Three players have subbed in to open spaces - Wusti, GaryLee, and Le_Roi (the first two in both tournaments and Le_Roi in FvA only).

All FvA matches are now being set up - if you haven't received a PM, it's because either you have a bye (check the challonge links) or your opponent is setting the games up and I'll PM you when they've done so. GvI matches will begin setup tomorrow.

Now is your last chance to edit your winners' bracket predictions! I'll be closing them tomorrow night.

I've been asked whether asking mentors for advice is allowed in this tournament. The answer is yes, unless you're my mentee (in which case you'll have to ask someone else instead).

Do we get to know who is being mentored by who?

Can I mentor everyone playing against genghiz, so I get as many shots at him as possible before I have to face him? :)

At what point should bracket predictions stop? I'd just edited F/A and G/I just to remove my "picked the dropped slot to win" ones, but since F/A at least has started I was thinking that should probably lock soonish?
