A general comment, which others have alluded to. Do not let a unit just sit there and hold when it can give a valid support, even if you think it is not needed. Sometimes you'll find out that the support is needed after all, either because you have misordered another unit or because a player you thought was an ally turns out not to be.

I'd add to this that you should rarely be issuing any order to a unit that you don't expect to have an effect. You don't have very many of them, and the best players will make use of them all.
