How did I force a disband? Dislodged unit could have retreated

Autumn turn--

France:
A Marseilles --> Piedmont
F Gulf of Lyons S A Marseilles --> Piedmont
F Western Mediterranean Sea S F Gulf of Lyons

Italy:
Piedmont [orders unknown -- was disbanded by A Marseilles --> Piedmont]
F Tuscany S F Tyrrhenian Sea
F Tyrrhenian Sea hold

Venice is and has been unoccupied. Italy did not lose a supply center during the turn. Why did A Marseilles cause A Piedmont to disband instead of simply dislodging then retreating back into Venice? I mean, I'll take it, since I am France, but it doesn't feel right.

Addendum: I'm a new player and I'm not understanding the graphical representation. When a unit is dislodged, does it disappear from that territory until the retreat phase, when it reappears in the territory to which it has retreated?

This is correct.

This is because after a fall turn there is a retreats phase. During the retreats phase, any players who had a unit dislodged get to choose where that unit retreats too or if they want to disband the unit. So Italy's unit is not gone yet, though he/she currently has to decide if they want to retreat or disband. Once this turn goes through, you'll see the results of that choice.

To raise another point: You can know the order from the Italian unit at Piedmont by checking the Orders tab on the bottom of the page if you are inside the game.

Usually it's one of three things:

1. Units bounced in the only territory the unit could have retreated to. Even though it's vacant, the fact that it was contested means no retreat.
2. The player missed the retreat phase, so the unit was automatically disbanded.[/
3. The player chose to disband the unit rather than retreat.

In your case, jmo is right though. Retreats just haven't happened yet.
