Retreat rules

#1 Post by sabkaa_baap » Wed Jan 24, 2018 3:23 pm

Can someone please describe the rules linked to where a unit can retreat?

Is it that a unit can retreat to just about any location which is free around it? Or is it linked to whether it was previously occupied by another user in the last turn?

Thank you.

Any free adjacent location where no stand-off(bounce) took place that turn. Yes, other people can retreat into your centres if open.

But you cannot retreat to the center from which the unit that displaced you attacked.

Thank you for your comments.

If there's an area where no stand-off took place, and I've just vacated (not a supply centre), will that be open for retreating as well?

If you've vacated somewhere, that would mean you successfully got into where you wanted and don't have a retreat? I may not be understanding your question.

The answer to the second question is "yes".

What he means is, take this scenario:

F Brest moves to Mid-Atlantic Ocean
A Gascony is attacked and displaced

Can A Gascony attempt to retreat to Brest if no other units moved to Brest during the move phase? That's the question I believe he's asking, and the answer is yes.

Also, just to be clear, you *can* retreat to supply centres.

You can retreat to any territory that you could have successfully moved into in the last turn without help of another unit.

What if you attempt to move to an adjacent space, unsuccessfully, and while you are away, two other units, each with support, and one of those supported units being your own armies, attempt to occupy your space, but bounce each other out... can you still retreat to your original space?

That's not considered a retreat. The original unit will just stay in place (because it moved out unsuccessfully) and does not retreat because no one dislodged it by moving in. Yes, there's a stand-off, but no unit has to retreat.

Leonidas: That's actually a common defensive strategy. I'm surprised that you didn't know that after having played for so many years.

Yes JECE I have been playing a long time, since 1978 actually, but quite sparingly since me and my teenage buddies had a pingpong table converted into the classic board, and played days on end. Nothing wrong with me confirming a few positions with this modern version of a great game. I myself am surprised at your condescending opinion of me brushing up on a few uncertainties I may have. Is this not the pkace to do such a thing??

This is exactly the right place to come and ask these things. We're happy to help!

Apparently this also seems to be the place for condescending opinions to be ventilated, but we don't ban users immediately for that. I'm sure he didn't mean it like that.

Right, I didn't mean to be condescending. I had no idea that you had been playing since the 1970's.

The meat of my contribution to this thread was that the scenario you described can be an effective defensive strategy.

By the way, what did you mean by "good ol’ common sense prevailing again, too bad it ain’t that common"?

I was just putting a spin on the old adage, ‘the thing with common sense is, that sometimes it ain’t that common’, one of the great things about this game is that the ‘rules’ are anchored by a foundation based on common sense, in my mind
