New to the game, and advice would be appreaciated

#1 Post by DiegoDproductions » Thu Jun 06, 2019 9:39 am

I have read the rulebook over, and have a basic grasp of the rules. I think the best way for me to learn though would be to play so I am here! Kinda lost though not sure what to start with? Are there games that are specifically geared for newbies or am I better off creating a game (looked into that, and wasnt sure what criteria to set :P )

any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would read the actual rulebook if that isn't the one you are referring to. http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules ... lebook.pdf

There is a "New Games" forum that you can check or post in to try and get a game going.

Also you could play some 1v1s (France vs. Austria or Italy vs. Germany) just to get used to the site interface and to see the rules in action. You can pick up some tactics and learn about the big stalemate line :).

I think there is a mentorship program somewhere too...

Welcome!
The above advice is good... read a bit, contact the mentorship program...
And join a game!
We have many games available for joining. I recommend a new game, rather than joining in as a replacement.
But this is a game that is best learned by doing.

In fact, there is a Full-press game advertised on the forum...
Full press is where everyone can write to anyone all the time.
It's the game being started by tobieeee.
He's alright, in a Dutch sort of way.

Umm... no... notice that 'dutch' was used to describe the phrase "he's alright." If I had said, "Tobieeeee is a jerk... in a Dutch sort of way," you'd have reason to complain.

Thanks guys! Really appreciate it!

I actually bought the board game (as I intend to introduce it to a bunch of friends once I have a good handle on how the game works) this was before I knew you could play online!

Playing is the best way to improve your game, but you can find a lot of good reading material on the interwebz, a fair amount aimed at newbies. Dip has had more written about it than any board game other than chess and go.

My blog is aimed at beginner/intermediate players, take a look-see:

https://brotherbored.com/diplomacy/

I recommend playing 1v1 at least 5 times before starting a “real” match so that you know how not to mess up your orders.

To be and not to be, that is the question, whether tis nobler in the mind...
Does this and Shakespeare ring any bells?

Hi

I am a new player. I have completed the mentor request form.

From http://webdiplomacy.net/gamecreate.php
It was not clear how I set-up a 1v1 game. Also in the games-listing I could not find and 1v1.

Any pointer/hints on what I am doing wrong and how to set-up a 1v1 ?

Thanks,
Brendan

You have to select a 1v1 variant type. The two 1v1 variant types are ClassicFvA and ClassicGvI.
