Question about AI retreating

I am planning on having two units attack the unit of a player who left the game and is now passive. When I attack, what determines where the unit retreats to? Is it random or is there some scheme by which it obeys? For reference, my units are in Burgundy and Ruhr and the passive unit is in Munich. There are currently other units in Berlin, Kiel, and Silesia, with Tyrolia and Bohemia free (this may change before I attack).

if a player does not order a retreat, the unit will disband, there is no AI to retreat for it, it goes bye bye...

i'll add that if a player misses two phases in a row, and doesn't log in between phases, they will go into civil disorder and another player may take their place.

so if the player has missed one phase, and in the current phase in which you dislodge their unit they still don't enter orders, another player may enter a retreat.

Attacking a player who left the game for missing phases is exactly what would happen if you attacked someone and they don't make moves. The army or fleet would be disbanded, and if they have more units than supply centers, a seemingly random (not sure how random) unit of theirs will be destroyed.

Great, thanks for the prompt help. The game I'm playing requires a password, so I won't worry about another player taking their place (other than the original player returning).

destruction of units for a nation that has more units that SC is not random, there is a detailed rule-book handling of this, based on distance from home SC, then fleet before army, and final tiebreaker is alphabetical order of the province name, not random at all.

Which is correct, Tugster, but the player was asking about retreats, not adjustments.

Tugster was correcting the incorrect information given in post 4, having already answered the original question.

In the board game, when this happens, the instructions are to remove the army or fleet that is furthest from a home center, but I'm not sure if this is implemented on WebDip.

While correct, this is not how it happens on webdip. There is a bug that prevents that from correctly working in all cases and I do not know what actually happens.

Really? Interesting. I've never seen a game that did not follow these rules.
