2017 Player of the Year Awards

#1 Post by Hellenic Riot » Sat Jan 27, 2018 4:08 pm

Now, that the transition to the new forum is complete, myself & the rest of the mod team have voted on the Player of the Year Awards. Thanks also to ghug & jmo for helping with some of the scripts being run. The Forum Awards were scraped solely from the old forum, as the transition occurred in the final week of 2017 anyway.

Many congratulations to xorxes for being voted our player of the year 2017 ahead of VillageIdiot and genghiz. His dominant performances as the player to beat in all 1v1 tournaments laid a marker for the rest of the site, and his strong gunboat performances also saw him climb into the top 10 for GR. 2017 was very much a year of 1v1's on webDip, and xorxes was the marker for the rest of the site to beat.

Our newcomer of the year award was given to CptMike, ahead of PRINCE WILLIAM and Foxcastle. Along with CptMike's very strong 1v1 performances, he's scored impressive results in live games and gunboats.

A congratulatory shout out to everyone who appears on these lists for their impressive performances (or in the case of the forum awards, having way too much time on their hands :P).

The full list of awards can be found here: http://tournaments.webdiplomacy.net/pla ... ear-awards

As much as I love xorxes and genghiz who were my desktop background... 1v1 isn't diplomacy. You could have just had a separate category for top 1v1 and given poty to VI. I get that the current mod team doesn't know what diplomacy is as they force draws games that shouldn't be drawn, but really?

I predict a very close contest for forumer of the year in the new forum era...

Congratulations to VillageIdiot for yet another magnificent 2nd place. May I suggest a silver fox as your avatar? When we eventually get avatars, that is :)

I want to know the methodology for picking poty "well you know this year we're prioritizing 1v1 but let's just randomly stick VI in the top 3 to make it pretend that we still care about diplomacy and this site hasn't been delegated to a low tier 1v1 mess"

Forumer of the year! Looks like selling my votes in the movie thread for +1s paid off.

Notice the subject is *not* “Diplomacy Player of the Year” it is simply POTY, and since it is posted on this site the implication is that it’s the *webDip* POTY, and like it or not, 1v1 has a significant presence on webDip...

Was this a vote or just picked by the Mods?

It’s a good point, the World Cup winners didn’t even warrant a banner like the 1v1 did.

Damn politics.

Congrats xorxes for a banner year.

I understand his alt “sexrox” also earned Player of the Year in another as yet unnamed non-Diplomacy web site.

Wow, thank you. I'm not sure I belong in the top 3, or even the top 33, with so many on this site who are great players in all aspects of the game, who put in the time as moderators or tournament directors, and who advocate the game and make this site a tremendous place to play Diplomacy. I truly am honored.
