Introducing Dark Mode
Posted: Sun Aug 11, 2019 3:43 am
webDiplomacy now has a dark theme option that you can use to navigate the site. You can go to your site settings to try it out for yourself.
What does this mean?
It means that if you're like me and stay up until 3 in the morning on the internet, your eyes don't have to bleed anymore! You can turn down the brightness on your screen and be comfortable. You may also simply prefer the new design to the old theme as it offers improved readability, higher contrast, and should lessen eye fatigue caused by an otherwise bright screen. Either way, you can easily swap between themes in your site settings, or simply pick one and use it permanently.
Do I have to use it?
No, you do not. Our light theme will always be available. However, there are notable benefits to both your device, including improved battery life, a less buggy screen, and less propensity to create a ghost image, and to you, including better sleep, less strain on the eyes, and less reason to get smacked by your partner at 2 am because you're keeping them awake.
I like it, but I reaaaalllly think this part needs to be changed...
Any design change will come with an opportunity to give feedback. You are more than welcome to post here with your ideas. If it's a good idea, I will try and make it happen. This thread is your opportunity to do so.
In order for your feedback to be valuable, it needs to be particular. What specifically do you not like? What would you prefer to see in its place? Does it look okay in some browsers or devices and not on others? The more particular you can be, the more likely it can be fixed or changed.
As always, if you spot a bug, feel free to contact the moderators by emailing [email protected], or just post here.
How much did you get paid to do all this?
Nothing! The incredible pay is the best part.
In fact, if you like the idea of being paid nothing, one of many large scale development projects that we are currently working on was creating the architecture to have multiple display themes. If you are confident in your development skills (particularly CSS, Javascript, and PHP) and think that you can design your own theme, feel free to contact me. The groundwork has already been laid.
Many thanks to Squigs and jmo as well as the mod team for helping with extensive bugfixing and testing, as well as emc for redesigning the forum emblems. Those should be live soon.
