Based on Question 9 and other answers, I think we can now be quite confident that the author is French.

I would agree with this. Free hint: the character is much, much, much more famous than the author.

Yep; agreed. Getting the 1835-1899 time period nixed rules out a *lot* of authors.

It does. It rules out most of the ones I had been thinking of!

I actually am starting to suspect that this is might not be the case: the first appearance of the character may have been in a non-novel book. Hominidae has given us Humpty Dumpty before, for example.
