No to all. As well as being the name of the thing, it is also the name of the process by which you put it on.

Hickey?

Or, to use the modern parlance, evidence of sexual assault between minors?

All guesses are wrong, Octavious was the furthest off. The process is usually applied to metal, but sometimes wood or plastic. As well as via pressure, the process can be done through cutting bits off, although it is less common.

These are still all wrong. The process creates a regular pattern when it is applied. The thing itself is a regular pattern.

Knurling?
We have a winner!
The correct answer is knurling, a regular pattern of crossing ridges usually applied to metal via pressure.
