Hello comrade and welcoming to People's Democratic Republic of Revolutionary Mafia! Here we are of having great communist fun and pleasing.

Recently we have securing control of the means of production and government in Glorious People's Revolution! We have just of finished destroying the evil fascist supercomputer PRESIDENT EDEN and are of installing People's Democratic Republic. However government is fighting of infection of treasonous EDEN LOYALISTS who seek to reinstall evil supercomputer dictator into mainframe. We must not let this happen!

MAFIA OVERVIEW

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game (for the town majority) is to kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

Once upon a time, in a forum far, far away, I wrote a crash course on how to play. Some very smart and thoughtful people have preserved it and added their insights in the years since. You can find it here.



GENERAL RULES

0. The GMs reserve the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at their discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day and make two posts per day phase. There are no posting requirements for the night phase.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots or text contents of ANY game-related communications.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption, i.e. if you are going to communicate in code, it cannot be code that is only decipherable via a third party decryption service.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.
5. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game.
6. All players are forbidden from cheating.
7. All players are required to play to win.
8. Players and/or teams may not concede the game in public.
9. All players are allowed to +1 other player posts. +1ing GM posts is not only encouraged, but there is a 50% chance that the first faction to +1 the GMs 50 times wins.
10. All players must follow the typical webDiplomacy rules and forum rules.
11. Any issues, concerns, or complaints should be directed toward the GMs only. For concerns that require escalation beyond the GMs, contact the mafia council to speak to a representative.
12. Violations of these rules may carry a penalty at the discretion of the GMs and the mafia council.



PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal/modkill and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. Sanctions such as future bans will be determined by the consensus of the active player base after the game has concluded. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.



MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM:
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game, over-sized posts that are not relevant to game, or quoting over-sized posts that are not relevant to the game) is not subject to mod-kill by rule in this game, but the GM reserves the right under Rule 0 to sanction any particularly egregious examples. Please be mindful of the fact that these threads get very big and difficult to read without deliberate spamming.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute (or "foes") list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the site moderators/admins, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence, where possible. The silenced player will, on their return to polite society, then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the Mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS:
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. Replacement is not guaranteed.

ROLE ACTIONS:
If you are a Town-aligned player with a role action, please PM both dargorygel and me to submit your action.
If you are a Mafia-aligned player with an individual action, you may use the faction-wide QuickTopic thread to submit individual actions.

"LYNCHING":
The webdip mafia community has decided to make a concerted effort to stop using the word “lynch” to describe the day phase killing. There is currently no punishment for using that word as old habits die hard, but that may change in future games at the discretion of the GMs and the mafia council.

[NOTE FROM YOUR GM: I support this community initiative. While I know old habits die hard, I'm told that you have had several months to get accustomed to the shift in phrasing. I don't anticipate this being a problem, but just in case, consider this fair notice that action may be taken if you are perceived to be deliberately flouting this initiative in bad faith. Otherwise I fully endorse the previous message.]




VOTING

There are two types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, and Mafia faction actions.

Daykill vote: The first type of voting is for all players during the day, in which you vote for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target (e.g., ##VOTE bo_sox48).
You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. However, if there is a player that the bot does not quite understand without being spelled out in full, it would be helpful for everyone if you could spell their name out in full when voting for them. If in doubt, spell it out!
In the event of a tie during a Daykill vote, no one shall be killed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double hashtags your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts. Votes posted after EOD (as timestamped on the forum) will not be counted. The GM will endeavor to call the end of phase promptly, but in case of delay, players should cease posting.

Must Vote: At the end of the Day phase, all participating players MUST have their vote on a candidate, or "Unvote" if you don't want to eliminate anyone. “No-kill” will be counted as “Unvote.” In both cases, a majority of “Unvote” will result in no one being eliminated. Any player violating the Must Vote rule will be replaced or modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances.

GM note: The "hammer" mechanic is being removed from this game as an experiment. I seek to test whether players prefer to have game phases always end at the predetermined time more than they prefer the option to end a day prematurely. I welcome all postgame feedback on this issue.

Mafia ‘Vote’: The second type of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their factional abilities at night. For M62, the mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss these abilities and how they are used. Please make your choices in bold, like so: ##kill bo_sox48 (<b>##kill bo_sox48</b>).
This game uses a special mechanic called assassination. When the mafia wish to employ the assassination mechanic, then they should replace "kill" in the above command with "assassinate." e.g. ##assassinate bo_sox48 (<b>##assassinate bo_sox48</b>).
Mafia factional abilities are approved by a majority vote, and the GMs will consider as submitted the most recent set of actions that earned a majority vote.

SETUP INFORMATION

[GM NOTE: I am attempting to standardize some terminology so that players can understand all possible role interactions with a simple plain reading of the roles + knowledge of certain keywords. A list of terminology follows the roles.]

This is a semi-open setup. You know the following information.

Although this game starts on November 25, all roles were PMed out during the day on November 24. The mafia will be able to post in their QuickTopic from the moment they receive their role PM until 1700 hours CST on November 25, when the game starts.

There are TWENTY (20) members of the PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC SECURITY COUNCIL [town] and SIX (6) members of the EDEN LOYALISTS [mafia].

The PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC SECURITY COUNCIL has up to TWO (2) Investigative Roles.
The PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC SECURITY COUNCIL has up to TWO (2) Protective Roles.
The PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC SECURITY COUNCIL has up to ONE (1) Killing Role(s).
The EDEN LOYALISTS have up to FOUR (4) Mafia-Unique Roles.
Except for "Daytime Roles" (Townie and Goon), no role is duplicated within a faction.

The EDEN LOYALISTS have two faction-wide actions.

Nightkill - Once per night, any one mafia player may attempt to kill another player. If the kill succeeds, the targeted player dies at the end of the night, and their role is revealed.

Assassination - Once per game, in addition to a nightkill, any one mafia player who is not executing the nightkill may attempt to assassinate another player. An assassination is a special variation of a kill with unique interactions with other roles; see notes below. If the assassination succeeds, the targeted player dies at the end of the night, and their role is revealed.

(NOTE: A mafia player with an individual night action may also carry out a nightkill or assassination in the same night.)

Assassination Mechanics

- The investigations of Trackers who investigate the mafia player attempting an assassination fail.
- The investigations of Watchers who investigate an assassination target fail with respect to the assassin.
- Assassinations are cancelled if the assassin or the target is detained.
- Medics who protect an assassination target have their actions cancelled.
- The assassination is announced as an assassination in the GM's end-of-night post, rather than as a kill.

INVESTIGATIVE ROLES

Parity Cop: Each night, you may investigate another target player. If the investigation is not cancelled, then the following will result.
On the first successful investigation, the investigation yields no result.
On all subsequent successful investigations, the investigation yields “SAME” or “DIFFERENT”. “SAME” means that the player investigated that night shares an alignment with the last player investigated before that night. “DIFFERENT” means that the player investigated that night does not share an alignment with the last player investigated before that night.
You win with the TOWN.
“Can we talk about the mail, please, Mac?”

Tracker: Each night, you may investigate another target player. If the investigation is not cancelled, then the following will result.
If your investigation target has targeted another player with a night action, then the investigation will yield the identity of the target.
Otherwise, the investigation yields no result.
You win with the TOWN.
“I’m hot on the trail!”

Watcher: Each night, you may investigate another target player. If the investigation is not cancelled, then the following will result.
If your investigation target is the target of night actions by other players, then the investigation will yield the identity of all other players who targeted that player that night.
Otherwise, the investigation yields no result.
You win with the TOWN.
“I will stand watch.”


PROTECTIVE ROLES

Medic: Each night, you may protect another target player. If the protection is not cancelled, then the following will result.
If your protection target is targeted by a killing action that night, the killing action fails.
Otherwise, your protection action is cancelled.
You win with the TOWN.
“Do no harm.”

Jailer: Each night, you may detain another target player. If the detention is not cancelled, then the following will result.
All night actions submitted by your detainee are cancelled.
All night actions submitted by other players targeting your detainee are cancelled.
You win with the TOWN.
“Just get in there and pipe down, we’ll let you out in the morning.”

Last Rites Priest: Each night, you may protect another target player. If the protection is not cancelled, then the following will result.
If your protection target is targeted by a killing action that night, the killing action fails. Instead, the GM will declare at the start of the next day phase that your protection target is “on their deathbed.” Your target will participate fully in the next day phase, and then die at that phase’s end.
Otherwise, your protection action is cancelled.
You win with the TOWN.

KILLING ROLES

Vigilante: Once each night, but only twice per game, you may kill another target player. If the kill is not cancelled, then the following will result.
If your kill target is targeted by a Medic or Last Rites Priest, your kill fails, and you may not attempt another kill via this power this game.
If your kill target is targeted by a Jailer, your kill is cancelled, and you will discover your target has been detained. You will be allowed to attempt another kill via this power on subsequent nights.
Otherwise, your kill succeeds, and your target will die at end of night.
You win with the TOWN.

MAFIA-SIDED ROLES

Blackmailer: Each night, you may investigate another target player. If the investigation is not cancelled, then the following will result.
If your investigation target has taken an action that night, then the investigation reveals the action and its target.
Otherwise, the investigation yields no result.
You win with the MAFIA.
“You might change your mind, once I show you this…”

Roleblocker: Each night, you may target another player to cancel. If your action is not cancelled, then the following will result.
All night actions the target player submits are cancelled.
You win with the MAFIA.
“Why don’t you take the night off?”

Smuggler: Each night, you may target another MAFIA player to smuggle. If your action is not cancelled, then the following will result.
All night actions submitted by the target player are cancelled.
All night actions submitted by other players targeting your target player are cancelled.
You win with the MAFIA.
“I know how we can get you out of this.”

Coordinator: You have no special night action. Instead, as long as you are not dead, you may post in the team QuickTopic thread during the day phase.
You win with the MAFIA.

Terminology

Sorry, I know it's boring, but if you have this, you should be able to work out every single role interaction. A guide to role interactions follows nonetheless.

Action – An effect the role may use at a specified time to influence the game.
Investigate – An Action in which the role submits a player’s name to receive information from the GM.
Target – The act of naming another player to be the subject of an Action; alternatively, the object of an Action.
Protect – An Action in which the role submits a player’s name to interfere with killing Actions directed to that player.
Kill – An Action in which the role or faction submits a player’s name to cause that player to die.
Death – An outcome of an Action in which the Target of the Action is removed from the game, typically at the end of the phase in which the Action occurs. When a player Dies, their role will be revealed.
Fails – An outcome of an Action in which the Action’s intended effect does not occur. The Action, for all other game purposes except the Action’s intended effect, is treated as though it succeeded.
Succeeds – An outcome of an Action in which the Action’s intended effect occurs. By default, all Actions Succeed unless they are somehow disrupted by the effects of another Action, or unless otherwise stated.
Cancel – An Action in which another action, for all game purposes, is treated as though it were never submitted. Some Actions may Cancel automatically, subject to certain conditions.
Detain – An Action in which the role submits a player’s name to Cancel all actions submitted by that player and all actions targeting that player. Any role targeting that player with a Killing Action will discover that the player has been Detained.
“On Their Deathbed” – An outcome of killing Actions in which, instead of dying at the end of the night, the target of the killing Action dies at the end of the next day phase.
Smuggle - An Action in which the role submits a player's name to Cancel all actions submitted by that player and all actions targeting that player.



Role Interaction Guide

Some common interactions follow. Again, the terminology and the plain meaning of the role PMs should be enough to figure out anything, but for your convenience:

1. Trackers cannot see the target of an EDEN LOYALIST carrying out the faction's assassination kill. Trackers cannot see the target of a role whose action was cancelled. Notably, Trackers cannot see the target of Medics and Last Rites Priests unless those roles have successfully protected their target. (In other words, if the Tracker targets the Medic, and if the Medic targets another player who is attacked and protected, the Tracker will see that the Medic targeted that player. If the Medic's target is not attacked, the Tracker will receive no result.) Trackers can see all other targets.

2. Watchers who target a player cannot see an EDEN LOYALIST who carries out the faction's assassination kill on that target player. Watchers who target a player cannot see a role who targets their target with an action, but has that action cancelled. Notably, Watchers who target a player cannot see a Medic or Last Rites Priest who targets that target player unless those roles have successfully protected the target player. (In other words, if the Watcher targets Player X, and Player X is attacked [and not assassinated] by Player Y and protected by Medic Z, the Watcher will see that Player Y and Medic Z both targeted Player X. If Player X is not attacked, then the Watcher will receive no result.) Watchers can see all other players who target their target.

3. Detention trumps cancellation. In other words, if a Jailer and a Roleblocker target each other, the Roleblocker is detained, and the Jailer's action succeeds for purposes of all other roles interaction. Likewise, if a Jailer and a Roleblocker target the same player, that player is detained, the Roleblocker's action is cancelled, and the Jailer's action succeeds for purposes of all other roles interactions.

4. Smuggling trumps detention. In other words, if a Jailer and a Smuggler target the same player, that player is smuggled, the Jailer's action is cancelled, and the Smuggler's action succeeds for purposes of all other roles interactions.

5. Medics may save the same player on consecutive nights, but may not save themselves. Assassinations trump Medic protections. In other words, if a Medic and an EDEN LOYALIST assassin target the same player, that player is killed, and the Medic's action is cancelled. Note that Medics in this situation do not target the victim for other role purposes, e.g. Trackers.

6. Last Rites Priests may save the same player on consecutive nights, but may not save themselves. Last Rites Priest protections work through all types of killing actions, including assassinations.

7. A quick "stack" visual of the order of operations follows. The stack is resolved from the top, so the first item will resolve first, the second second, etc. Although "kill/assassinate" is listed in the middle, no player actually dies until the end of resolutions at minimum - a Tracker getting killed on a certain night won't be prevented from investigating (although getting killed would make that fruitless, wouldn't it...).
