MAFIA OVERVIEW

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game (for the town majority) is to kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

GENERAL RULES

why are the rules I copied from another thread 0 indexed?

0. The GMs reserve the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at their discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day. There is no minimum post count requirement.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots or text contents of ANY game-related communications.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption, i.e. if you are going to communicate in code, it cannot be code that is only decipherable via a third party decryption service.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.
5. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game.
6. All players are forbidden from cheating.
7. All players are required to play to win.
8. Players and/or teams may not concede the game in public.
9. All players are forbidden from +1ing other player posts. +1ing GM posts is not only encouraged, but there is a 50% chance that the first faction to +1 the GMs 50 times wins.
10. All players must follow the typical webDiplomacy rules and forum rules.
11. Any issues, concerns, or complaints should be directed toward the GMs only. For concerns that require escalation beyond the GMs, contact the mafia council.
12. Violations of these rules may carry a penalty at the discretion of the GMs and the mafia council.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal/modkill and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. Sanctions such as future bans will be determined by the consensus of the active player base after the game has concluded. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM:
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game, over-sized posts that are not relevant to game, or quoting over-sized posts that are not relevant to the game) is not subject to mod-kill by rule in this game, but the GM reserves the right under Rule 0 to sanction any particularly egregious examples. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section below for more information.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute (or "foes") list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the site moderators/admins, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence, where possible. The silenced player will, on their return to polite society, then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the Mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS:
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. Replacement is not guaranteed.

ROLE ACTIONS:
If you have any actions to take, please PM your action the GMs. Mafia's nightkill will be voted on in the mafia chat, and members of the Mafia may submit individual orders there, although orders PM’d to the GM will always take precedence.

VOTING

There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members.

Daykill vote: The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target (e.g., ##VOTE bo_sox48). You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. However, if there is a player that the bot does not quite understand without being spelled out in full, it would be helpful for everyone if you could spell their name out in full when voting for them. In the event of a tie during a Daykill vote, no one shall be killed.

Note: The webdip mafia community has decided to make a concerted effort to stop using the word “lynch” to describe the day phase killing. There is currently no punishment for using that word as old habits die hard, but that may change in future games at the discretion of the GMs and the mafia council.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double hashtags your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts. Votes posted after EOD (as timestamped on the forum) will not be counted. The GM will endeavor to call the end of phase promptly, but in case of delay, players should cease posting.

Must Vote: At the end of the Day phase, all participating players MUST have their vote on a candidate, or "Unvote" if you don't want to eliminate anyone. “No-kill” will be counted as “Unvote.” In both cases, a majority of “Unvote” will result in no one being eliminated. Any player violating the Must Vote rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances.

Hammer Vote: The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights are set to 24 hours; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of hashes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of players are voting to endhammer ON THE SAME TARGET. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

Mafia Vote: The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their factional NK (nightkill) target. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: ##kill bo_sox48 (<b>##kill bo_sox48</b>). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the newest vote will break the tie.

Cop

You are Bugs Bunny, the town cop. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you have the opportunity to choose a player to investigate. You win when the mafia are defeated or nothing can be done to stop the mafia from being defeated.

Tracker

You are Bugs Bunny, the town tracker. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you have the opportunity to choose a player to track. Forensic Investigator

You are Bugs Bunny, the town forensic investigator. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. One time during the game, and only at night, you may choose a dead player upon which you will perform an autopsy. You will learn who took an action against that player on the night they died, but if multiple players took actions against them you will not know who did what. Doctor

You are Porky Pig, the town doctor. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you have the opportunity to choose a player to try to protect from being killed by the mafia. You are experienced in your studies, and while you have not yet deduced how to protect a player from being poisoned, you will be able to save your chosen player if they are targeted by the mafia. You cannot attempt to protect the same player twice in a row. Your target will not be made aware that you protected them unless they were saved from death. Absorber

Witchdoctor

You are Porky Pig, the town witchdoctor. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you have the opportunity to choose a player to try to protect from being killed by the mafia. While your techniques are primitive, you take advantage of native remedies of the land; thus, you will have a 50% chance of saving the player you choose from being killed. You cannot attempt to protect the same player twice in a row. Your target will not be made aware that you protected them unless they were saved from death. In order to make your choice, PM both bo_sox48 and Jamiet99uk. You win when the mafia are defeated or nothing can be done to stop the mafia from being defeated.

Gunsmith

You are Daffy Duck, the town gunsmith. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Twice per game, and only at night, you may choose a player to give a one-shot gun. You can only give each player a gun once. In order to make your choice, PM both bo_sox48 and Jamiet99uk. You win when the mafia are defeated or nothing can be done to stop the mafia from being defeated.

Inventor

You are Daffy Duck, the town inventor. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Twice per game, and only at night, you may choose a player to give one of the following items:

• A one-shot gun that can be shot at any time.
• A flak jacket that protects them from one mafia kill or killing item and is automatically worn by the recipient.
• A bomb that will explode on the next player that visits the recipient and kill them, but will not kill the recipient.

You can only invent each item one time. In order to make your choice, PM both bo_sox48 and Jamiet99uk. You win when the mafia are defeated or nothing can be done to stop the mafia from being defeated.

Bombmaker

You are Daffy Duck, the town bombmaker. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Twice per game, and only at night, you may choose a player to give a bomb, which will explode and kill the next player that visits the recipient regardless of alignment. But you do not want to get caught and exposed as the bombmaker, so after you give someone a bomb you will have to lay low for a night in order to avoid suspicion. You can only give each player a bomb once. In order to make your choice, PM both bo_sox48 and Jamiet99uk. You win when the mafia are defeated or nothing can be done to stop the mafia from being defeated.

Lawless Jailer

You are Foghorn Leghorn, the town’s lawless jailer. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you have the opportunity to choose a player to imprison for the night. While under your guard, your prisoner can speak only with you in your private communication channel, and cannot be visited by any other players. Once per game, you may choose to kill your prisoner at the end of the night. In order to make your choice, or to kill your current prisoner, PM both bo_sox48 and Jamiet99uk. You win when the mafia are defeated or nothing can be done to stop the mafia from being defeated.

Informed

You are Road Runner, the town’s informed. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Because you are so well informed, you know that [other player] is [role] and aligned with the town. You win when the mafia are defeated or nothing can be done to stop the mafia from being defeated.

Goon

Each night, you will also vote to try and recruit your final teammate, the traitor, into your chat. As the godfather, you are immune to cop scans, cannot be tracked, and will have your name redacted on the forensic investigator’s report. You win when the town has been defeated or nothing can be done to stop the town from being defeated.

Ninja

You are Elmer Fudd, the mafia ninja. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you will communicate with your teammates and decide who to kill and roleblock during the night. Each night, you will also vote to try and recruit your final teammate, the traitor, into your chat. As the ninja, you cannot be tracked, and you are able to dodge exploding bombs. You win when the town has been defeated or nothing can be done to stop the town from being defeated.

Lawyer

You are Elmer Fudd, the mafia lawyer. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you will communicate with your teammates and decide who to kill and roleblock during the night. Each night, you will also vote to try and recruit your final teammate, the traitor, into your chat. As the lawyer, twice per game you can choose a teammate to defend. The teammate you choose will be immune to cop scans, unable to be tracked, and have their name redacted on the forensic investigator’s report for that night. In order to make your choice, PM both bo_sox48 and Jamiet99uk. You win when the town has been defeated or nothing can be done to stop the town from being defeated.

Strongman

You are Yosemite Sam, the mafia strongman. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you will communicate with your teammates and decide who to kill and roleblock during the night. Each night, you will also vote to try and recruit your final teammate, the traitor, into your chat. Once per game, you can use your immense strength to overcome the protection of the doctor, absorber, or witchdoctor. If the absorber is attempting to take the kill for your target, both will die. In order to make your choice, PM both bo_sox48 and Jamiet99uk. Your strength cannot overcome a flak jacket. You win when the town has been defeated or nothing can be done to stop the town from being defeated.

Suicide bomber

You are Yosemite Sam, the mafia suicide bomber. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. Each night, you will communicate with your teammates and decide who to kill and roleblock during the night. Each night, you will also vote to try and recruit your final teammate, the traitor, into your chat. Once per game, you may rig yourself to explode and target a player. Poisoner

Deflector

Traitor

You are Tazmanian Devil, the mafia traitor. Each day, you must vote for a suspect to kill. You are not part of the mafia chat initially, and until your teammates discover your identity and recruit you you will not be able to communicate with them. If they are able to recruit you, you will join their chat, and your entire team will be able to use it during both day and night so long as you are alive. Your teammates are [mafia team]. You win when the town has been defeated or nothing can be done to stop the town from being defeated.


THIRD PARTY ROLE PMs

Defender

You are Marvin the Martian, the independently aligned defender. Your goal is to ensure that [town target], who is aligned with the town, survives, and you win with the town if they are alive at the end of the game. To assist you, [town target] is immune to the first attempt to nightkill them. [town target] is not immune to killing items. You can still win even if you die, but if [town target] dies, you will die as well.

Freelancer

You are Marvin the Martian, the independently aligned freelancer. Your goal is to be nightkilled by the mafia team, and then be daykilled by vote. If you win, you will die, but the game will continue on and you will share your victory with the last faction standing.

ITEM MECHANICS

Any items you receive can either be used as intended, or they can be passed from one player to another during the night. In order to pass an item to another player, you should PM both GMs, and we can confirm privately that we received the PM if needed. Items will be passed at the end of the night, which means that they can be tampered/deflected/stolen by the mafia. In the event that the intended recipient of your item dies, the item will be lost, as per the order of night operations listed below. If the intended recipient of your item is roleblocked, or if you are roleblocked, the item can still be passed.

If an item distributed by a PR or an item passed to another player is tampered with, stolen, or deflected, neither you nor the recipient will be notified.

Items can stack, meaning that it is possible to have more than one item at a time.

Items distributed or passed to a player at the end of the night become active at the following day start.

GUNS

Guns can be given by the gunsmith or the inventor, and can be tampered with by the tamperer or stolen by the item thief at night. They can be used once. To use, PM both GMs, and the GMs will process the shot at the first opportunity, day or night.

FLAK JACKETS

Flak jackets can be given by the inventor, and can be tampered with by the tamperer or stolen by the item thief. They can be used once, and the player with the jacket does not have to take any action in order to use it. The flak jacket will protect the user from nightkill attempts (and is not overcome by the strongman) and item kills, but does not protect the user from a daykill. If the doctor protects the player, the jacket is still used, and the doctor protection is ineffective. However, if the absorber protects the player, the jacket is not used (unless targeted by the strongman), and the absorber will die. The flak jacket does not protect the wearer from the suicide bomber.

BOMBS

Bombs can be given by the inventor or bombmaker, and can be tampered with by the tamperer or stolen by the item thief. They can be used once, and are used automatically upon being visited by another player (besides tampering or stealing), at which time the bomb will explode and kill the visiting player(s) (including town PRs, but not the ninja), but not the player who possessed the bomb.

DAFFY DUCK: (To Porky) Who invited these bears? I didn't think they were going to be in this picture.

PAPA BEAR: We're a-huntin'. It's rabbit season!

PORKY: N-n-n, nev-nev-nev, uh, don't worry about them, Daffy, what about the rob-rob-rob-rob, uh burglary?

Enter BUGS BUNNY, chewing a carrot.

PAPA BEAR: A rabbit! A big one, too! (He raises his shotgun).

GM NOTE:

In case anyone is unaware of it, the super-useful Peterbot is up and running, here:
