Re: The Counting Game

594 AD
Byzantine (in name and practice) Emperor Maurice fires his (successful) general Priscus. Apparently he disobeyed one too many orders. Instead he promotes his inept and inexperienced brother Peter to top dog to attempt to complete the war against the Avars. It did not go well. I realize that "Peter" was a legit name back then, but it looks comical amidst all the names like "Maurice," "Priscus" and the like.

When I read your comments like this, I think of sports announcers: "Today is the Quarterbacks third game ever playing on an odd numbered day, against a team that has four people with similar middle names, while it is raining, and right handed WR's outnumber left handed WR's, while three of his cousins-by-marriage are in the stadium!!!"

596: according to wikipedia, NOTHING happened in 596 BC. They could have had some of OUR things from this year... we had enough to spare.

Αthe end of the sixth century the empire was halfway in the transition between Latin and Greek. After Maurice, and the usurper Phocas, came Heraclius whose reign was to complete the change.

596 AD Maurice take it on himself to continue the expedition in the Balkans. He becomes the first emperor to cross the Danube after more than two centuries.

Maybe the Battle of Raith happened in 596, but maybe it's just a theory so doesn't count

600 AD Slavs begin to settle in the Balkans, they will reach south as far as Peloponnesus where they won't stay but they will leave their traces in words used even today in modern Greek.
(sorry Jamie I am neither a math expert like Damo nor a polymath as Dargo)

601... either
a) the area code for central Mississippi.
or
b) the mathematical value (using an obscure numerology technique) of the word: "polymath."

602nd Tank Destroyer Battalion was a tank destroyer battalion of the United States Army active during the Second World War.

The battalion was formed in March 1941 as the 2nd Infantry Division Provisional Antitank Battalion, and on 15 December, was redesignated as the 602nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, in line with the reorganisation of the anti-tank force. It remained in the United States until 1944, when it was moved to the United Kingdom, deploying into Normandy in late August equipped with M18 Hellcats.

It first saw combat on 9 September, fighting along the Moselle in the Lorraine Campaign and participating in the capture of Metz in November with the 26th Infantry Division. During the Battle of the Bulge in December it was sent north to Belgium to help stabilise the line, arriving near Bastogne on 21 December, and fought in the counterattack in January 1945 as part of the 11th Armored Division. Company C of the battalion was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for its role in clearing the Harlange Pocket.

After participating in the offensive through the Siegfried Line, the battalion was returned to the southern sector in March, and attached to the 89th Infantry Division on the 15th. It crossed the Rhine on the 26th, and advanced into Germany. On the 4 April, elements of Company A were the first to enter Ohrdruf, the first concentration camp to be liberated by American forces.

An engine sold by Chevrolet, designed for performance in track racing. Interestingly, the factory excludes this engine from their usual warranty.

On the 607th page of the edition of War and Peace that I prefer to read, Andrei is referred to by four distinct names.

608 AD Heraclius exarch of Carthage revolts against emperor Phocas whose reign has become a reign of terror. It will take him two years, but it will succeed on overthrowing Phocas (who had also overthrown the previous emperor).
