MAFIA 51 - LONDON BY GASLIGHT [HIDDEN]

#1 Post by worcej » Fri Nov 22, 2019 9:00 pm

Fog everywhere. Fog up the river, where it flows among green aits and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping and the waterside pollutions of a great and dirty city. Fog on the Essex marshes, fog on the Kentish heights.

Gas looming through the fog in diverse places in the streets, much as the sun may, from the spongey fields, be seen to loom by husbandman and ploughboy. Most of the shops lighted two hours before their time, as the gas seems to know, for it has a haggard and unwilling look.

You're in for surprise. You're in for a shock. In London town streets, when there's darkness and fog. When you least expect him, and you turn your back.... he'll attack!

London in 1888 is not the gleaming modern metropolis of 2019. It is a dark and dangerous mass, riddled with barely-habitable rookeries where dwell a multitude of criminals, some more petty than others, and where an honest man ventures out after nightfall only if he is very brave, or very foolhardy. And even by day there is always the fog, the cursed belching of more than a million chimneys which carpets the sprawling mass and snuffs out hope as surely as it dims the sunlight.

Yet it is to this dim, now-distant London that our attention is drawn, for it is to be the location of MAFIA 51 - LONDON BY GASLIGHT!

GENERAL RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day, and post at least twice per game day.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing, or copied mechanics.
5. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game notes.
6. All players are forbidden from cheating.
7. All players are required to play to win.
8. Players and/or teams may not concede the game in public.
9. All players must not +1 other players' posts. However you are greatly encouraged to +1 any GM posts. In fact, I would say this is mandatory but I doubt most of you will read this little bit in here hehe...

ELABORATION

0. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios pre-emptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible.

1. You MUST cast a vote at least once during each day phase. You may vote and then 'unvote' (see below) if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an 'unvote' in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted. During each day phase, every player MUST make at least two game-related posts. The GMs will use reasonable discretion when applying this rule.

2. All role PMs have been posted in the setup information. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; after all, the fun of this game is reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside software or other tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. Only GM endorsed QuickTopic threads can be used for communicating with one another outside of the main game thread; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging between players. You may PM the GM with questions or instructions.

5. Players who have been removed from the game are no longer playing the game, and will not be permitted to comment on it in private messages or comment threads. A special QuickTopic "God Thread" will be opened for individuals who wish to spectate on the game, or players who have been eliminated. Use this channel to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you are considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, message the GM about it before saying/doing it and the GM will let you know whether it is allowed or not.
To clarify further: Players may not copy and paste any game related Mechanics. Players may not doctor, and create fake game related mechanics. Players may not share personal correspondence between GM to player under any circumstances. The GM will not confirm any claims, or adjudicate based upon anything that could easily be sorted out through questioning and evidentiary circumstance.
7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. If someone wishes to concede defeat, they must PM the GM, or post in their relevant QT thread for the GM to check it over. Public concessions are not permitted.

9. You are not permitted to click the "+1" on any other player's in-game posts. Giving +1s to the GM, by contrast, is actively encouraged. Like I said earlier, should be mandatory if you ask me...

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. Sanctions such as future bans will be determined by the consensus of the active player base after the game has concluded. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM:
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the site moderators/admins, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS:
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. Replacement is not guaranteed.

ROLE ACTIONS:
If you have any actions to take, please PM your action the GMs. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point. Mafia's nightkill and roleblock will be voted on in the mafia Discord thread.

VOTING:

There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

“Lynch” vote: The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE VECNA) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during an execution vote, no one shall be killed.
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double hashtags your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.
Must Vote: At the end of the Day phase, all participating players must have their vote on a candidate. You may ##VOTE and then ##UNVOTE if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an ##UNVOTE in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted.

Hammer Vote: The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days and nights are set to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of hashes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of players are voting to endhammer. Please note that a majority of players on the same wafgon is NOT required, simply a majority end votes will end the day with the current vote totals. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day. Every player must vote end to activate hammer mechanic during night phases.

Mafia Vote: The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their factional NK (nightkill) target during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill Zultar (< b > kill Zultar < / b >). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the oldest vote will break the tie. The oldest vote determines which member of the Mafia team actually performs the kill, unless the mafia team designates someone to make the kill.

TOWN ROLES

You are SHERLOCK HOLMES, the DETECTIVE

During the day you must vote for a suspect.
At night, you may take ONE of the following actions. Each may be used ONLY once:

- COP SCAN - returns results of EVIL or NOT EVIL
- VANILLA COP SCAN - returns results of VANILLA or NOT VANILLA
- TRACK - select a target - you will see who they visit that night (if anyone).
- WATCH - select a target - you will see who visits them that night (if anyone).

You record the results of your investigations in your NOTEBOOK (item).

You are part of the town, and you win when both Mafia factions and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening.

------------------------------------------------

You are JOHN WATSON M.D., the DOCTOR

During the day you must vote for a suspect.
At night, you may select a player to visit. You may *not* target yourself. If your target is attacked by a night killing action, you will save their life. They will learn they were saved, but not by whom. You may not target the same person on consecutive nights.

ONCE per game, at night, INSTEAD of using your save, you may conduct a POST MORTEM on a player who died the PREVIOUS night (only). You will learn the specific ROLE (but not identity) of their killer.

You keep your medical instruments used for both types of action in your DOCTOR's BAG (item).

You are part of the town, and you win when both Mafia factions and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening.

------------------------------------------------

You are ISABELLA BIRD, the TRAVELLER (commuter)

During the day you must vote for a suspect.

THREE times per game, at NIGHT, you may TRAVEL out of town using one of your train tickets (item). On nights when you have done this, you may not be successfully targeted by any night action.

You are part of the town, and you win when both Mafia factions and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening. You are FEMALE.

------------------------------------------------

You are CHARLEY BATES, the STREET URCHIN

Living by your wits on the streets of London’s less fashionable areas, you sleep lightly and see many things. You are ALERT. If anyone visits you at night, you will observe them visiting you.

You are part of the town, and you win when both Mafia factions and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening.

------------------------------------------------

You are ADA LOVELACE, the GAMBLER

Each DAY, you may place a bet on who will be NIGHTKILLED the coming night. If you are correct, you may select one of the following reward items:

- A one use medical bag (doc save, used even if no save is needed)
- A one use dose of cocaine (makes you ALERT for the night consumed. If anyone visits you that night, you will observe them visiting you).
- A one use bottle of whisky (roleblocks target)
- A one use train ticket (commute)

Each reward may be earned only once.

You are part of the town, and you win when both Mafia factions and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening. You are FEMALE.

------------------------------------------------

You are DOCTOR JEKYLL *and* MISTER HYDE

By day you are the kind and learned Dr Jekyll, the DAY DOCTOR. During any Day phase, at any point in the day, you may select a player. Once you have made your selection you cannot change it. If they are targeted with a killing action during that day or the coming night, you will save their life. You may elect to protect yourself. You may not target the same person on consecutive days.

Horrifyingly, for a short while each night, as a result of your ill-advised experiments, you undergo a bizarre transformation, and you fall under the grip of the evil Mister Hyde. Mister Hyde has a Night Kill on odd-numbered nights only. This Night Kill can NOT be withheld, and is directed not by you, but by another player outside of the sign up list. This player will be an existing webDip member who has played Mafia before. They will know your identity; you will not know theirs. If Hyde targets Jack the Ripper, or Dr Jekyll, the attack will fail.

You will know each morning if Mr Hyde has killed. If more than one person died overnight, you will not know which was killed by your own possessed hand.

You are aligned with the town, scan as town, and can only win with the town. If town win, whether you survived or not, you share in the win.

The player controlling the nightly actions of Mr Hyde is aligned with Evil, and may register a win separately from you if:

1. Either* of the Mafia teams wins, even if you (and thus Hyde) has died, or:
2. The game reaches a point where only you (and thus Hyde) and The Ripper are left alive.

If town wins, the player controlling Hyde's night action has lost.

Mr. Hyde (and therefore also Dr. Jekyll) is Third Party NK immune.

You are JAMES MORIARTY, the EVIL GENIUS (anti-detective)

During the day you must vote for a suspect.
At night, you may take ONE of the following actions. Each may be used ONLY once:

- COP SCAN - returns results of GOOD or NOT GOOD
- VANILLA COP SCAN - returns results of VANILLA or NOT VANILLA
- TRACK - select a target - you will see who they visit that night (if anyone).
- WATCH - select a target - you will see who visits them that night (if anyone).

You record the results of your investigations in your NOTEBOOK (item).

You are part of Moriarty’s Company. You win when the Town, and the other Mafia faction, and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening.

You are COLONEL MORAN, the STRONGMAN

During the day you must vote for a suspect.
ONCE per game, at night, you may perform an *unstoppable* nightkill.

You are part of Moriarty’s Company. You win when the Town, and the other Mafia faction, and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening.

You are a GOON

During the day you must vote for a suspect.

MAFIA ROLES, TEAM 2:

You are WILLIAM BURKE, the GRAVE ROBBER

During the day you must vote for a suspect.
Once per game, at NIGHT, you may visit the grave of a character that has died by whatever means. You will recover any ITEMS which had been in their possession on their death, and may use those items just as if you were their original owner, although limited-use items are not recharged.

If you obtain a NOTEBOOK, you will find out who the owner of that notebook investigated, and the results – obtaining a notebook does not give you the ability to scan, track or watch for yourself. If you obtain Jack’s KNIFE, this does not give your team an additional nightkill. Instead, if you yourself are targeted by a nightly killing action while in possession of the knife, you will kill your assailant instead (the knife is then discarded).

You are part of Burke and Hare’s Company. You win when the Town, and the other Mafia faction, and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening.

You are WILLIAM HARE, ROLEBLOCKER

During the day you must vote for a suspect.
Each night, you may visit another player. This will ROLEBLOCK them and prevent them from performing any actions.

You are part of Burke and Hare’s Company. You win when the Town, and the other Mafia faction, and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening.

You are a GOON

During the day you must vote for a suspect.

You are part of Burke and Hare’s Company. You win when the Town, and the other Mafia faction, and Jack the Ripper are dead, or nothing can stop this from happening. You are FEMALE.

THIRD PARTY ROLE

You are JACK, the WHITEHALL RIPPER

On EVEN numbered nights, you may perform a Night Kill using your KNIFE (item) on any player. If you target Mr. Hyde, your attack will fail.

You win the game if either of the following points is reached:

1. You have personally killed THREE female characters with your knife, by any point in the game.

2. The game reaches a point where only you and Dr.Jekyll / Mr.Hyde are left alive. At that point, Mr.Hyde wins with you, and Dr.Jekyll the rest of town, and the Mafia factions (which by this point are dead) all lose.

You are Third Party NK immune.

GM NOTE

It is not stated in super explicit terms above but, for the avoidance of doubt, if Jack the Ripper is the last person alive, he wins.

A thick, hard frost glistened from the cobbles outside Spitalfields Market. The voice of a young newspaper seller carried on the chill, tugging breeze that temporarily cut through the perpetual fog.

"Morning Standard! Morning Standard! Ripper strikes again! Terrible murder in Whitechapel!"

Inspector Lestrade strode past the boy. He did not need to read the newspaper. He'd seen the grisly, blood-soaked scene for himself just hours earlier. Lestrade considered himself a cool-headed man, and it was hardly the first corpse he had had the misfortune of having to examine, but still, this one had put him quite off his breakfast.

The furrows on his brow deepened. This particular murderer, the violent manner of his unpleasant craft, and the fact that he preyed only on young women, was raising the concern of the public into a state of near hysteria. Something had to be done. It was time for an expert in these matters to be consulted.

Baker Street is a long way from Spitalfields Market. Lestrade noticed a Hansom carriage approaching, and extended his arm.

Yes, something had to be done.

So let me get this obviously out there... no massclaim. No waste of two days discussion massclaim.

Tell jokes instead if you think massclaim is tempting you to suggest it.

So this horse walks into a bar... and orders a drink. The bartender says, "hey, what do you think you're doing? You're not a human being, are you?"
"I don't think I am" says the horse.
And the horse suddenly instantly disappears.

Because you see... he was carrying out DesCartes "I think, therefore I am" thing... in reverse.

I would have explained that rationale BEFORE the horse story...
But if I did...

I would have put DesCartes before the horse!
