MAFIA 48 -The Gladiator- GAME THREAD [HIDDEN]

#1 Post by ND » Mon Aug 12, 2019 8:16 pm

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game (for the town majority) is to kill all the mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

=====
RULES
=====

0.) The GMs reserve the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his or her discretion.
1.) All players must vote at least once per game day, and post a game-related post at least twice per game day.
2.) All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3.) All players are forbidden from using encryption unless explicitly allowed by the setup.
4.) All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.
5.) All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all QT threads related to the game.
6.) All players are forbidden from cheating.
7.) All players are required to play to win and are not allowed to attempt to sabotage their team.
8.) Players and/or teams may not concede the game in public.
9.) No players or spectators may +1 a player's post. It is permissible to +1 a GM post.
10.) All players must follow the typical webDiplomacy rules and forum rules.
11.) Any issues, concerns, or complaints should be directed toward the GMs only. For concerns that require escalation beyond the GMs, contact the moderators.
12.) Violations of these rules may carry a penalty at the discretion of the GMs.

ELABORATION

0. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios preemptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible.

1. You MUST cast a vote at least once during each day phase. You may vote and then 'unvote' (see below) if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an 'unvote' in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted. During each day phase, every player MUST make at least two game-related posts. The GMs will use reasonable discretion when applying this rule.

2. All role PMs have been posted in the setup information. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; after all, the fun of this game is reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside software or other tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. Only GM endorsed QuickTopic threads can be used for communicating with one another outside of the main game thread; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging between players. You may PM the GM with questions or instructions.

5. Players who have been removed from the game are no longer playing the game, and will not be permitted to comment on it in private messages or comment threads. A special QuickTopic "God Thread" will be opened for individuals who wish to spectate on the game, or players who have been eliminated. Use this channel to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you are considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, message the GM about it before saying/doing it and the GM will let you know whether it is allowed or not.

To clarify further: Players may not copy and paste any game related Mechanics. Players may not doctor, and create fake game related mechanics. Players may not share personal correspondence between GM to player under any circumstances. The GM will not confirm any claims, or adjudicate based upon anything that could easily be sorted out through questioning and evidentiary circumstance.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

8. If someone wishes to concede defeat, they must PM the GM, or post in their relevant QT thread for the GM to check it over. Public concessions are not permitted.

9. You are not permitted to click the "+1" on any other player's in-game posts. Giving +1s to the GM, by contrast, is actively encouraged.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. Sanctions such as future bans will be determined by the consensus of the active player base and or the Mafia Council. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

ROLE ACTIONS
If you have any actions to take, please PM your action the GM. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point. Day actions can be sent in to the GM as long as the day phase is running, but if you do not get an action in before adjudication (and it is a day action) it will not be counted. Send your actions to both GMs as one of us may not be online.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section below for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the site moderators/admins, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. Replacement is not guaranteed.

TURN DURATION
This game’s Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g., hammer). Extensions may be granted at the GM’s discretion, but don’t count on it. Phase shifts will be at 6:00PM Eastern Standard Time.

CHALLENGE DURATION
This game has a special mechanic shared among three roles called a challenge. This will be discussed more below, but the duration of a challenge shall last 24 hours, split into two segments, during the day phase. These challenge periods will last during the following times:

Challenge Duration #1: Hours 0-24 (Day Phase)
Challenge Duration #2: Hours 24-48 (Day Phase)

These times are hard set so once a challenge is received or timed to begin at a certain point the challenge will only last for the challenge duration it is begun in. So, for example, if a challenge begins at hour 15 of the day phase it will only last until hour 24 of the day phase. At hour 24 any challenges that have begun during duration #1 will be adjudicated likewise for hour 48.

The Adrenaline Gladiator, Deathproof Gladiator, and Reward Gladiator can all issue a challenge (see their roles for more information) this is done by PMing the GM with who you wish to challenge. Once this is received it will be triggered in-game. Only one challenge can occur at a time so if more than one are received it will be in order of first received. In the challenge, all players can only vote for one of the two players in the challenge. The players in the challenge will be the player who issued the challenge and their target. No roles or anything like that will be announced by the GM so the player will have to play the challenge as they see fit.

Any votes made before a challenge was issued will still count towards the *must vote rule* but will be superseded during a challenge. During the challenge, only new votes cast for one of the two contestants will be counted.

======
VOTING
======

There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to execute perceived Mafia in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

“Lynch” vote: The first level of voting is for whom you intend to kill. Notate this vote with a pair of hash symbols before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE ND) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during an execution vote, no one shall be killed.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double hashtags your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.

During a Challenge Duration any votes that have been made prior to the challenge announcement will be discarded/superseded. Players will only be able to vote for one of the two contestants in the challenge. Voting for these contestants will follow the same rules as the “Lynch” vote (above).

Must Vote: At the end of the Day phase, all participating players must have their vote on a candidate. You may ##VOTE and then ##UNVOTE if you change your mind as the Day progresses, however you may not end the phase with an ##UNVOTE in place. Anyone violating this rule will be modkilled unless there are very extenuating circumstances. Ending the day with a vote on “No Lynch” is permitted.

If a player votes during the day, but their vote is superseded due to a challenge duration then that is acceptable. It may be impossible due to when challenges are announced for every player to be able to vote during a challenge duration due to other time commitments. However, players must vote at least once during the day even if there vote gets superseded.

Hammer Vote: The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of hashes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of players are voting to endhammer the same player. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day. Night phases may not normally be hammered - any exception to this will be announced by the GM.

Mafia Vote: The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their factional NK (nightkill) targets during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill Zultar (< b > kill Zultar < / b >). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the oldest vote will break the tie. The player with the oldest vote on the target with the majority of mafia votes will be the one who carries out the kill.

GAME MASTER

This game’s GM is ND. Dargorygel is the Co-GM. PM both with any questions or concerns and either will get back to you as soon as possible. Please PM questions to both GM’s. If there is unclarity in the response look to ND’s post as the official answer.

ORDER OF ADJUDICATION

Each role can take one role action during the night phase unless otherwise stated.

Day Phase:

Night Protection: The Bodyguard selects who they will protect during the night phase. This action must be made before the end of day and will protect from night imprisonment or a night kill.

Imprisonment: The Jailor selects who they will imprison during the night phase. This action must be made before the end of the day and the target will be imprisoned during the night phase.

Proximo: Proximo may send a message if he has unlocked that power. The message will be delivered at the end of the day phase. Proximo’s bets are paid if he made them during the previous night phase.

Night Phase:

Town Roleblocker: A target will be roleblocked from carrying out night actions by the town roleblocker

Mafia Night Kill: The Mafia makes a night kill.

Town Night Kill: The Reward Gladiator may make a night kill if that power has been unlocked.

Jailor Stab: The Jailor may stab someone they imprisoned.

Lazy Cop: The Lazy Cop may investigate a player. The result will be returned to them at the end of the next night phase.

Proximo: Proximo may place his bet(s) and if he has unlocked the power to send a message it will be delivered at the end of the night phase.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Role Information

Mafia (The Imperial Court) 5x:

Mafia Judge: You are Emperor Commodus, son of Marcus Aurelius, and ruler of the Roman Empire. After murdering your father, you have returned to Rome to rule the Empire. Seeking to expand your influence and to use the mob of Rome to your advantage you have once again opened the Colosseum to the games. Ultimately, you would like to disband the Senate and be the sole source of power and authority in the state. You scan as mafia to cop reports and are night kill immune. During the duration of the game you have two (1x) powers. Once per game, the Emperor may show clemency to the leading wagon. If that wagon is lynched then the player will survive via a 1x ‘Thumbs Up’ resulting in no deaths. Once per game, the Emperor may be vengeful and choose to give a ‘Thumbs Down’ to any wagon besides the leading wagon. The wagon will be lynched instead of the leading wagon. You can use either of these powers freely during a normal day phase, but they must be made before the end of the day phase. During a challenge, however, you are only able to use the ‘Thumbs Up’ and not the ‘Thumbs Down’ and cannot use this ability on yourself (if you have been challenged). Wins with the Mafia and once the Town has been eliminated.

Deathproof Gladiator: You are Tigris of Gaul an undefeated Gladiator renown and revered by the mob of Rome. With a single lift of your war axe the crowd goes wild! If you are ever lynched or killed via a killing action you will survive. This is a 1x ability. Furthermore, you have a 1x challenge that you may use at any time. You may challenge another player by PMing the GM with who you wish to challenge. If you fail to defeat the target your deathproof ability is used up. If you succeed in defeating the other player the mafia team gains an extra night kill which can be used at their discretion. If you challenge Proximo then your challenge is expended without refund. Scans as TOWN. Wins once the town is eliminated and with the mafia team.

Mafia Jailer: You are General Quintus; a Roman Legatus, Commander of the Praetorian Guard and loyal subject to the Emperor. You will do what it takes to make sure your power and the Emperor’s power is protected against all threats. During the DAY, the Mafia Jailer may imprison a player and prevent them from carrying out a role action at night. This is done by PMing the GMs during the day phase with who you want to imprison. Once per game, you may STAB a prisoner causing them to die at the end of the subsequent day phase. The stab occurs while the prisoner is imprisoned at night. While imprisoned, the player is immune from night killing actions except the stab. Player will know they are stabbed. You scan as mafia. You win when the town is eliminated and with the Mafia.

Encryptor: You are Senator Falco; a member of the Roman Senate and Patrician loyal to the Emperor. You may use your network, vast wealth, and influence to provide day communications with the mafia team. While you are alive the mafia team may talk during the day. You scans as mafia. You win when the town is eliminated and with the Mafia.

Mafia Goon: You are the Praetorian Guardsman. You are a loyal subject of the Emperor and are a valuable member of the elite Praetorian Guard. You scan as mafia. You win with the Mafia and once the town is eliminated.

Town (The Gladiators) 13x

Reward Gladiator: You are Maximus Decimus Meridus: A former Roman Legatus forced to become a slave. Prior to becoming a slave you were the favored General of the true Emperor Marcus Aurelius, but when Commodus murdered his father you were slated to be executed. Escaping execution, you found that Commodus had murdered your family in Hispania. Before, you could enact your revenge slave traders forced you into servitude. But, fortune has found a way to bring you to Rome to compete in the great Colosseum. You are night kill immune, but can be stabbed while imprisoned. Furthermore, you have (2x) challenges and may challenge another player to a duel twice per game by messaging the GM with who you wish to challenge. If you fail in a challenge, you die. If you succeed but kill a member of the town you lose your night immunity. If you succeed and your opponent was mafia aligned you gain a 1x night kill. If your opponent is Emperor Commodus you gain 2x Night Kills. If you challenge Proximo you will lose one of your two challenges and it will not be refunded. You may only challenge one player per day. Scan as Town. Wins when the Mafia has been eliminated and with the town.

Roleblocker: You are Princes Lucilla, sister to the Emperor, and daughter to the former Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Convinced that Commodus killed their father and looking for a way to stop her mad brother’s rule Lucilla has turned to new allies. The roleblocker may target another player twice per game with a roleblock (2x). If successful, your target is unable to perform a night action. You scan as MAFIA, but are town aligned and win with the town.

Bodyguard: You are Hagen. You are a Germanic warrior and formerly Proximo’s chief gladiator trainer. However, you later befriended Maximus and Juba upon arriving in Rome and now seek to protect Maximus at all costs. Each DAY, the bodyguard may select another player to protect. The bodyguard will protect from a day targeted imprisonment or a night killing action. If the Bodyguard targets a player who is targeted for imprisonment then the Bodyguard is imprisoned instead; furthermore the Bodyguard will kill the Jailor if the Jailor attempts to stab him resulting in both dead (Jailor dies immediately, but Bodyguard will die at the end of the subsequent phase from the stab). If the Bodyguard is just imprisoned then he will be ‘roleblocked’ only. The Jailor will be told their imprisonment was successful and will not know if the Bodyguard switched or not. If the Bodyguard targets a player who is targeted by a night killing action then the Bodyguard will kill whoever targeted that player unless it is the Emperor or Deathproof Gladiator; in that case the Bodyguard will die and the Deathproof will lose their ability but remain alive; and the player targeted will know they were targeted. If it’s the Emperor neither the Bodyguard or the Emperor will die. If the Bodyguard, himself, is targeted by an action and has not self-targeted then the Bodyguard will die and the Mafia member will not be killed. The Bodyguard can self-target or target to protect without restriction. Scans as Town. Wins when the Mafia has been eliminated and with the town.

Lazy Cop: You are Cicero, loyal servant to Maximus. After learning that Maximus was alive and in Rome you made haste from the army in Germania to the Capital to serve your master once again. Each night you may select another player and investigate them. Your result will come in a day late. However, you will learn if a player is a member of the Imperial Court (Mafia) or not part of the Court (Town or Third Party). Scans as Town. Wins when the Mafia has been eliminated and with the town.

Adrenaline Gladiator: You are Juba. You first met Maximus in Africa at Proximo’s arena. After befriending him you journeyed to Rome to fight with him in the arena. If targeted by a night killing action, the Adrenaline Gladiator will instead survive until the end of the following night phase. If lynched, the Adrenaline Gladiator will instead survive until the end of the following Day Phase. Furthermore, you have a 1x challenge that you may use once per game. You must PM the GM if you wish to challenge. You may challenge any player except Proximo or the Emperor. If you target either your 1x challenge will be expended without refund.

Lesser Gladiator: You are -x- a Lesser Gladiator. Your power is the power of the vote. Each Day Phase you vote for who you believe to be a member of the opposing faction. You win with the Town and when the Mafia have been eliminated.

Third Party

Survivor: You are Proximo. Once you were a Gladiator, but now you are a free man and a gruff entertainer. Business is business. You have met Maximus and the former Emperor Marcus Aurelius and know that both are and were honorable men, but money is money. Commodus has made you rich by reopening Rome to Gladiatorial combat. Above all your interest rests with your own survival. You begin the game with a 1x Night Immunity. Each night, the survivor may bet on what faction he thinks will be lynched the next day (town, mafia, no one). If he is successful then the survivor will be granted for the next night, automatically. He may place a secondary bet on a challenge (town wins, mafia wins, no one wins). If you are successful on the outcome of the challenge then the survivor gains the ability to send a message of any length privately to another player via the GM during the day or night. If a challenge supersedes a day phase adjudication that adjudication will count for the challenge and normal lynch bet. If you are challenged by another player then the player who issues the challenge will be told privately it failed. The survivor will then gain the ability to issue a challenge, but instead of competing directly you will compel two players of your choice to fight (this must be done through a GM message). The survivor can win with either the Mafia or Town, but must be alive at the end.

GAME START FLAVOR

The city of Rome is in mourning. The beloved Emperor Marcus Aurelius has died, sadly, while on campaign in Germania. His son, Commodus has ascended the steps of the Senate and been declared Emperor by the Patricians under a pale of suspicion. In the hallowed halls of the Senate, Commodus has declared his intentions to reopen the Gladiatorial games effective immediately. Several of the Senators eye him suspiciously as he does so knowing that the Imperial Treasury is nearly bankrupt and that there are more concerning problems facing the city.

“I think I understand my own people.” Emperor Commodus says in a faint whisper while walking around the Senate chamber with a sword. He spends more time eyeing the sword then the Senators who are casting him dubious glances.

One Senator steps out into the chamber to face him.

“Then perhaps Caesar will be so good as to teach us, out of his own extensive experience?” which causes several of the older Senators on one side of the room to nervously chuckle.

“I call it love, Gracchus. The people are my children, I am their father. I shall hold them to my bosom and embrace them tightly…” He trails off, but hangs the sword over his shoulder as he stares down Senator Gracchus.

“Have you ever embraced someone dying of plague, sire?” Senator Gracchus says with a smile.

“No.. but if you interrupt me again, I assure you that you will.” Emperor Commodus moves towards Gracchus, but then exits the chamber to return to his palace in Rome.

Later that night he receives a report that the first gladiatorial teams are arriving in the city from all corners of the Empire. Gladiators are pouring in from Africa, Hispania, Gaul, Greece, and so forth. Emperor Commodus nods in approval knowing that the games will distract the people from mourning his father and also distract them when he eventually disbands the Senate.

GAME START MESSAGE:

Who will win Mafia 48? The Imperial Court led by the nefarious Emperor Commodus? The Gladiators led by the valiant Maximus? Will Proximo survive? Find out in Mafia 48! The game has begun! 48 Hours remain in Day 1.

##GM NOTE

1. There was an error in the game start post. Lesser Gladiators did not receive the, you are -x-, portion of the message. That was a remnant from ‘behind the scenes’ setup stuff. No Lesser Gladiator received a flavor name and will not until role reveal.

2. I will be using time.is for end of turn adjudication.

We just like to have weird usernames? No idea.

Also, interesting lack of posters (quantity not quality) for a game start - is this that weird of a time for people?
