Foxcastle and I were talking about doing role PMs differently. I still havent ironed it out with him what he wants to do officially but my thought was making it so that you have to confirm youve read your role pm to both gm's.

Not to thriw squiggs under the bus but we want your confirmation to play to be a contract that includes your compulsory agreement youll read the role weve given you prior to posting.

Just my thought. No gunboat mafia ya assholes.

We'll keep the current confirmation process where people post in the thread that they're ready to go, since that's the easiest thing for both GMs and players. The provision that you must read your role PM will be added as a GM's note to Rule 7. Agreeing to play is already an implicit contract that you're going to abide by the rules, and I think the public confirmation phase helps get people excited and lets everybody in the game know that everybody else is charged up.

And the addition is definitely not a dig at Squigs. Actually, I'm kinda calling myself out here, because I've considered not reading my PM as a strategy to keep my Day 1 "clean" before, too. (Great minds think alike, eh Squigs!) But Brainbomb's point that you can't actually play to your win condition if you don't know what your win condition is was very striking to me, and I think it's worth clarifying.

There will be a week (starting Sunday, Oct 28) where Europe will have ended summer time before the US does (on Sunday, Nov 4). It's giving me a headache trying to figure out what that will look like without springing early deadlines on some players.
No worry. Just set dst_zone=usa and the bot will do day change when you do. We in Europe will just get one week relief with one hour earlier deadlines that one week. 😁

If the rest of the European contingent are okay with the deadlines being an hour earlier during that week, then we'll peg deadlines to the US time change.

No offense taken. Id also like to clarify that although I didn't read my PM for the first 8 hours, when I pulled that gambit I had in fact actually read my PM. There's no way I would have risked pulling that gambit if I was scum, and I did it as a reaction test. That game was just soooo boring up to that point.
I'll read my role PM before every game now

Sorry, rdrivera! Didn't mean to leave you out of the time change fun... I see that in addition to the Europeans shifting their clocks a week ahead of the US, clocks in Brazil are shifting on the same day as the US but in a different direction.

Here is what deadlines would look like if we simply stick to the US time change. If this is problematic for anyone, we can try to work out an alternative.

Start —> Saturday, October 27

5:00 PM Eastern Time (US)
6:00 PM BRT (Brazil)
10:00 PM GMT (London)
11:00 PM CET (Sweden)
12:00 Midnight Turkey

Sunday, October 28 —> Saturday, November 3

5:00 PM Eastern Time (US)
6:00 PM BRT (Brazil)
9:00 PM GMT (London)
10:00 PM CET (Sweden)
12:00 Midnight Turkey

Sunday, November 4 —> Conclusion

5:00 PM Eastern Time (US)
8:00 PM BRT (Brazil)
10:00 PM GMT (London)
11:00 PM CET (Sweden)
1:00 AM Turkey Time

That’s all great, but I’m not reading my role PM until I feel it is necessary to do so in order to play to my win condition, which depending on what roles I could draw is not always on day 1. There is often nothing on day 1 except scumhunting, which I do the same way regardless of my role, and often nothing about my role PM that is necessary in order to play to my win condition. If it is necessary to read on day 1, it can wait almost always until the end of the day is near. This is how I have always done it and I don’t suppose you would consider me one to play against my win condition.

If you want me to lie to you before the game starts, though, I am happy to do so. Just let me know.

Not ruling as a GM here or anything (yet), but here's my perspective on that.

The point of not reading your PM is to help ensure that you don't look like scum when you interact with your mafia teammates, because you legiterally don't know who they are. It's a good strategy, as far as that goes. Sure, you might end up lynching a teammate, but that's not much different from busing, and busing isn't (necessarily) against the mafia wincon.

But if it's a good strategy, then why shouldn't everybody do it? And if everybody is not reading their role PMs on Day 1, then Day 1 becomes NAI. And if Day 1 is NAI, then there's no point is playing it, and games should just start with the the night kill on Night 1...

This seems like something that maybe should be hashed out by the larger player set in general, rather than here in a sign up thread. I'm definitely not excited to weigh this game down with rules controversy before it even starts.

I am probably in the minority on this, but I liked how the Toy game started on N1 instead of D1 - it made it a lot more flavorful and gave concrete information before the first Lynch.

Seems to me that the rule to play to your wincon is necessary and sufficient.

If bo is suggesting he will confirm that he has read his role PM regardless of whether he has in fact done so then rule would be redundant anyway. (I'm assuming there is no way for GM to see if a PM has been read. Is this right?)

Happy to go along with whatever Fox decides.

Personally, forcing players to read a role pm seems a bit overbearing. It's your game so if that's what you want, but I wouldn't make that rule imo.
