I think Spartaculous is being tricky here, but I'm not sure how exactly.
Was this character created as a symbol or mascot of something?
Also worth noting memes, folklore… I haven’t wanted to ask the question because I’m not sure how I would like to phrase it

Does this character have an E (or e) in their full first name?

Yes, those are also good options, although I think most folklore would have warranted at least a pass on the "first appeared in a book" question.

Is this an animal of some sort? This includes humans, elves, and dragons, just not robots, talking inanimate objects, and things like that.

Scratch that! Missed the human question.
Duly scratched.

There's also musicals and plays. And serials (e.g., novels that appeared in magazines). Speaking of which,
Free Guess: Lady Jessica (Dune)

Wasn't Dune originally published in a book? Might be wrong about that though...

Apparently it was originally in a magazine. Not sure if magazines count as a subset of books or not.

Per wiki: Dune is a 1965 epic science fiction novel by American author Frank Herbert, originally published as two separate serials (1963-64 novel 'Dune World' and 1965 novel 'Prophet of Dune') in Analog magazine.
There are a decent number of mid 20th century novels / stories that did this, I think. Some Philip K. Dick ones for sure.

Remember it's 1800 or later.
Was this character introduced in 1979 or later?

Maybe we should ask broader questions.
Was the character introduced in some form of printed media?
